A multicarrier QAM modulator has been developed and simulated. The multicarrier QAM modulator contains four upconversion circuits. Each upconverting circuit accepts 12 b in-phase and quadrature data streams, interpolates those by 16 and upconverts the baseband signal to a selected center frequency. The outputs of these upconverting circuits are combined together in the digital domain. The multicarrier QAM modulator was designed to fulfil the spectrum and error vector magnitude (EVM) specification of the wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) system.

In this paper, the design of prototype filters for uniform DFT filter banks used in oversampled subband adaptive filtering structures is investigated. Two optimization procedures (a linear and a nonlinear) are proposed for the search of the optimal coefficients of the analysis and synthesis prototype filters. The nonlinear method is based on the minimization of an estimate of the steady-state mean-square error, while the linear approach uses the results of a convergence analysis to design the analysis prototype filter and then finds the synthesis prototype filter by a LMS-type algorithm. Computer simulation results are presented to illustrate the improvements in the convergence characteristics of the oversampled subband structure obtained with the proposed prototype design methods.

In this paper, a new approach for weighted least square (WLS) design of FIR filters is presented, in which an iterative procedure is developed for the inversion of the matrix involved in the design. By imposing a mild constraint on the update factor of the weighting function, the inverse of a matrix is expanded as a convergent power series. By exploiting the properties of some of the matrices involved in the design, a modified version of the series that converges rapidly is then proposed to evaluate the inverse in each iteration. It is shown that due to the fast convergence of the power series, one has to evaluate only the first two or three terms of the series after a few initial iterations, implying that the conventional operation for matrix inversion is simplified significantly.

A simple model for predicting the RF bandwidth and conversion loss of a sampler from a given sampling switch conductance function is presented. The model is valid for any conductance function and for any relation between sampling pulse width and sampler time constant. As an example, the model is here applied to the case with a linearly rising/falling sampling switch conductance function and differences between the sample-and-hold and track-and-hold modes of operation are studied.

A popular method for generating truly random numbers based on a natural phenomenon is the electronic amplification and sampling of a thermal or shot noise signal. As ail electronicsystems are influenced by finite bandwidth, 1/f noise and other non-random influences, perfect randomness cannot be preserved by any practical system. This paper develops a method to quantify the impact of common circuit anomalies on the randomness of sequences produced by a noise amplifier system. Numerical simulation results are presented which verify the theoretical derivations.

This paper concerns the design of FIR filters using quantized coefficients belonging to a sum of signed power-of-two terms (SPT) domain. Unlike other SPT filter design approaches, we added a global constraint that a priori fixes the total number of shift registers; thus each coefficient can be represented using different precision. The difficult FIR filter design optimization task, is solved by a specific Tabu Search (TS) method. Several experimental results and comparisons with other well known approaches, demonstrate the effectiveness of this filter architecture and the proposed optimization algorithm.

Vector quantization systems are usually based on digital implementation of the core operations. In this paper, video compression systems exploiting an analog implementation of vector quantization are presented. The main advantages of analog design are exploited, obtaining notable performances when compared to other solutions found in the literature. The circuit features a very modular, completely parallel internal architecture. Many circuits can be easily connected to obtain a larger codebook size and a larger vector dimension. Synthesis of codebooks is also described.

The capabilities of the conceptual link between threshold gates and sorting networks are explored by implementing a (8/spl times/8)-multiplier which uses a sorter as the main building block. Traditional disadvantages of binary sorters such as their hardware intensive nature are avoided by using /spl nu/MOS circuits which allows us to improve previous results for multipliers based on a similar architecture.

The state-space description of externally linear Class AB dynamical systems is explored. Motivated by recent work in the area of log domain filtering, a definition for a generic Class AB dynamical system is proposed. Following this, a more useful differential state-space formulation is proposed which is intuitively consistent with the nonlinear electroniccircuits that implement Class AB systems. A discussion of static and dynamic constraints which imply Class AB operation, along with a basic theorem, leads to more practical constraints on the state-space formulation which will allow Class AB externally linear behavior of a system. Next, the results are used to explain the operation of several already-existing basic Class AB log domain and exponential state-space filters. Finally, a new generalization to existing Class AB circuit topologies is offered.

This paper proposes a novel method for designing two-channel and M-channel causal stable IIR PR filter banks using cosine modulation. In particular, we show that the PR condition of the two-channel IIR filter banks is very similar to the two-channel FIR case. Using this formulation, it is relatively simple to satisfy the PR condition and to ensure that the filters are causal stable. Using a similar approach, we propose a new class of M-channel causal stable IIR cosine modulated filter banks. design examples are given to demonstrate the usefulness of proposed approach.
