design for environment (DFE) toolkits have grown rapidly in recent years, with a variety of streamlined life-cycle assessments, diagrams, and interpretation strategies being available. In this paper, the authors apply a selection of these tools to AT&T's flagship 5ESS electronic switch to evaluate their use in assessing and improving a complex industrial product. The usefulness of the different tools is emphasized, especially the prioritization or DFE recommendations.

In this paper, a new scheme that measures the significance of temporal activities of moving objects in image sequence is proposed. The measured temporal activity distribution is then used for motion estimation in MPEG like video coder. The proposed 'adaptive motion estimation' scheme consists of five function blocks: temporal subband analysis (TSBA), extraction of temporal activity distribution (TAD), scene change detection (SCD), picture type replacement (PTR), and temporally adapted block matching algorithm (TABMA). All five function blocks are developed primarily based on the temporal subband analysis. According to the significance of TAD, TABMA adjusts its nonuniform motion vector searching area. Also, newly proposed SCD and PTR together can prevent poor motion prediction for a video sequence containing abruptly changed scenes in it. Computer simulation results show that the proposed motion estimation scheme is superior to the one of typical MPEG like video coders: it requires less computations, and it shows better performances.

design considerations for a neuromorphic cochlear implant and its system architecture are given. A set of equations describing a fully continuous complete (3-turn) analytical 3D lumped-parameter (LP) impedance model based on in-vivo guinea-pig cochleae measurements and qualitative reasoning is introduced. 3D phase and amplitude in the organ of corti (OC) can be visualised from a stimulus presented at the round window (RW) for normal and implanted cochleae. A SPICE model uses nonlinear longitudinal resistors and linear (transversal) Rs and Cs which can be easily made amplitude and/or freq. dependent. The methodology is used in devising a new non-linear, multi-functional cochlear architecture to aid the synthesis of circuit building blocks representing sensory transduction. Further model applications include realistic and computationally efficient studies of electrode stimulation issues in implanted cochleae, and frequency-domain mapping of compressive and expansive OC nonlinearities for future silicon VLSI closed-loop cochlear implants or speech recognition.

A new and unique connector design is presented that employs a novel circuit element to compensate for phase changes that occur with connector movement. The connector design is capable of providing better than 40 dB of improvement over the conventional connector in the modulation sideband levels caused by relative motion such as that seen under mechanical vibrations. This improvement may be achieved with practical designs over moderately large bandwidths up to 20% or more at microwave frequencies.

design and performance of a unique X-band GaAs MMIC PIN diode receiver protector (RP) with switchable attenuator is described with a maximum average and peak leakage levels of 17 dBm and 20 dBm respectively. The fast acting 8 diode RP requires no external biasing and exhibits a recovery time of 50 ns. The MMIC includes a switchable 13 dB attenuator after the RP. Two RP/attenuator circuits for balanced operation are included in a 120 by 150 by 6 mil MMIC which exhibits only 0.55 to 0.7 dB loss, and a return loss of 15 to 30 dB over an octave bandwidth.

Application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) are frequently implemented using a fixed base array personalized with metal interconnect permitting rapid turnaround. For any particular design, the array cannot be fully-utilized. Due to limitations on gate, routing, and pin resources, or the limited number of array sizes. In some array designs, such as sea-of-gates, 100% array utilization is nor possible since much of the array area will be used for routing. This partial array utilization makes yield prediction difficult. Traditional area-based yield models underestimate array yield since they assume that all defects that occur in unused portions of the array will be fatal, when most will not. Reducing the critical area by the utilization factor will overestimate yield, since some defects cause fatal circuit faults even when they occur in unused sections of the array. These yield errors can result in uncompetitive designs and lost profits. Accurate prediction of array-based ASIC yield requires an understanding of how defects interact with the base array and its personalization to cause fatal circuit faults. In this paper we describe a methodology to accurately predict the probability of fatal faults and yield in array-based ASICs using the DEFAM defect to fault mapper. We demonstrate the use of this methodology on several versions of a sea-of-gates array design, showing how traditional methods both overestimate and underestimate the actual yield.

This paper presents a new approach to the description and identification of nonlinear systems by using look-up tables that represent the differential equation corresponding to the identified system. The measurement of these look-up tables and the identification of their structure are discussed. Finally, an important application of this description method is presented: the compensation of arbitrary nonlinearities by means of the inverse system.

This paper describes the construction of a new generation of flexible ultrasonic transducers. The device consists of an array of piezoceramic platelet devices of high aspect ratio embedded within a soft polymer matrix, supported by a copper/polyimide flexible printed circuit board. Theoretical modelling using both a linear systems approach and the ANSYS finite element package was used to predict transducer behaviour, and compared with experimental results and surface displacement profiles with good correlation. In addition, the linear systems technique was utilised to evaluate potential piezoceramic materials and the results compared to a conventional thin piezopolymer film transducer structure. The ceramic/polymer platelet transducer has been implemented in two application areas: a 6 MHz multi-element linear array for flaw detection in curved test specimens, allowing imaging of test piece construction; and efficient generation of the fundamental symmetrical Lamb wave at frequencies below 500 kHz, using interdigital design techniques, in both aluminium and carbon-fibre reinforced polymer composite plates. Experimental results will be presented which will demonstrate the application of this flexible transducer technology to practical NDE.

In recent years, various types of system in millimeter-wave band have been developed. In a millimeter-wave system, it is suitable to make use of an antenna without feed loss. A radial line slot antenna (RLSA) is a slotted waveguide planar antenna proposed for direct broadcast from satellite (DBS) subscribers in the 12 GHz band. Since this antenna utilizes a waveguide as a feed circuit, a high efficiency is theoretically expected irrespective of the frequency. This paper presents the design of RLSA at 60 GHz band and predicts its performance.
