One of the drawbacks of using averaging models in the analysis and design of power electronicsystems has been the uncertainty in determining the stability of the system since these techniques necessitate a small-signal restriction and thus cannot account for nonlinearities. This paper addresses this problem. It presents the replacement of the averaging models by stochastic models. The stochastic models for pulse-width modulated (PWM) converters will be developed based on recent techniques employed from the theory of stochastic differential equations. An important feature of these stochastic models is the representation of perturbations in the duty ratio of switching converters as Gauss-Markov processes (or colored noises) keeping the nonlinear model intact. In these type of studies, the dynamics of the electronic system (switching converters) are modeled as a diffusion process, indicating that the system will exhibit transitions between stable states. This has lead to the introduction of the mean first passage time (MFPT) of the dynamic electronic system from a certain domain of attraction which can be used as an index of system stability.

Two upper-level VLSI courses were taught with the same philosophy: all aspects of the design and fabrication process must be considered, and success evaluated with finished prototypes. The ultimate path to a silicon chip is important, even if not readily achievable in a single semester VLSI course project. Both course instructors had significant industrial research experience, which generated a `seeing is believing' attitude towards course projects. A mixture of industrial and academic concerns were addressed in VLSI design. electronicdesign automation tools are essential for integrated circuit (IC) prototypes, and are compared at each university. Individual student projects from the fall term, 1992, were presented at General Motors Research, in a minisymposium which also included a tour and discussion about the operation of the clean room available at GM Research.

A fast parasitic-insensitive continuous-time filter and equalizer integrated circuit that uses an active integrator is described. Circuit techniques for excess-phase cancellation and for setting the corner-frequency of the filter and equalizer are also described. These techniques result in a filter and equalizer chip with performance independent of process, supply, and temperature without employing phase-lock loops. The 20-MHz sixth-order Bessel filter and second-order equalizer operate from 5 V, and generate only 0.24% (-52 dB) of total harmonic distortion when processing 2-Vp-p differential output signals. The device is optimized to limit high-frequency noise and to amplitude equalize the data pulses in hard disk read-channel systems. The device supports data rates of up to 36 Mb/s, and is built in a 1.5μm, 4-GHz BiCMOS technology.

These circuits must meet extreme reliability and quality standards that require tight process control of critical in-line parameters. As design dimensions shrink below one micron, reliability and yield issues increase the importance for control and improvement. The FSC Manassas VLSI Pilot Line has implemented a Total Quality Management (TQM) system utilizing Statistical Process Control (SPC) principles to monitor the continuous and systematic reduction of process variation towards a goal of six sigma (<3.4 defective parts per million). This paper will discuss the strategy and implementation of SPC in the VLSI Pilot Line, including data showing progress toward achieving the six sigma excellence goals.

SAW stabilized oscillators are currently being considered for use in many future military systems. In operation, these devices will be subjected to harsh environmental conditions including temperature, humidity and vibration. This study was initially devised to accomplish two objectives. The primary objective was to determine the feasibility of using commercially available SAW oscillators to meet the stringent acceleration sensitivity requirement of 10-11/g needed for state-of-the-art military applications. The second objective was to establish a performance baseline of acceleration sensitivity since there was very little preexisting data for use by system developers. However, when the acceleration sensitivity data collected for the various oscillators was correlated with the physical attributes of the oscillator circuits and SAW resonators, more general design guidelines could be inferred from the data for the production of vibration insensitive oscillators.

The Center for Microelectronics Research (CMR) at the University of South Florida has pursued the development of high density interconnect technologies for advanced electronicsystems. Primary focus has been in the area of Laser created interconnects for quick-turn around prototyping of electroniccircuits fabricated using standard Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) process techniques. The Laser Restructuring of a specific application circuitry at the wafer or packaged chip level is accomplished by creating low electrical resistance links between conductors and cutting conductor lines using an integrated computer controlled Laser system. Restructuring of generic electroniccircuits, is an excellent technique for alternative for low-cost, quick turn around with complete circuit similarity between the Laser Restructured prototype and the customized product for mass production. A great effort was put into developing an infrastructure within the Laboratory that will conduct state of the art research while keeping manufacturing capabilities for rapid turn around of restructured circuitry using optimized process parameters. Total system control, flexibility, high data quality, and full documentation are examples of this R&D developed environment. Automated, minimum downtime, easy user interface, historical record keeping, error warning and logging, and overall system response tracking for preventive maintenance are examples of the guidelines for the production and manufacturing environment. Using design of Experiment techniques and statistical data analysis, Laser created interconnects were studied. Optimum process parameters were obtained using this methodology.
