A detailed description is given of a rigorous procedure that incorporates both lossy and imperfectly matched diodes. As an example, it is shown how to choose the values of the design parameters of a phase reflection modulator, an important component in the imbedding networks. Simple design equations are derived which include mismatched and lossy diode characteristics. These are developed using the invariant properties of the diode's Q factor and hyperbolic geometry on the Smith Chart.

Four different circuit configurations are proposed to design 0°-360° wide range, low loss, loss balanced phase shifters. Each configuration utilizes 3 pin diodes. As a consequence of this work, 180 degree phase shifting cells for multibit phase array antenna systems using 3 pin diodes can be constructed in a straightforward manner. Operation of the new circuits is based upon the phase shifting properties of symmetric low/highpass 3 element LC ladders. Assuming the utilization of lossless pin diodes and ideal reactive elements, explicit design equations are presented. A numerical method, which includes the diode losses as well as component parasitics, is also described to design practical phase shifters with minimum balanced loss at a given operating frequency. Examples are included to exhibit the use of explicit design formulas, and computer simulations are performed to analyze the loss and phase characteristics of the new circuits. It is expected that new configurations will find application in the commercial and especially military large array antenna systems over the EHF band to be implemented as monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC).

A performance analysis of discrete time feedforward AGC circuits is presented. Two different types of amplitude estimation were considered which lead to different performance results: MAD estimators are very simple to implement, but generate an infinite number of undesirable harmonics which cause harmonic and aliasing distortion;RMS detectors, involving a square operation, generate only one undesirable component but with a large amplitude which requires a great deal of filtering. Computer simulations are presented which allow the design of these circuits in a straightforward manner.

Switching noises generated in digital circuits are inevitably coupled into analog circuits through commonly shared power lines and substrate layer. Three design techniques to reduce the power ripple coupling, which include optimizing individual SC integrators, minimizing input transistor area, and applying a stable bias potential, are described. Experimental results using the optimizing technique show more than 8-dB ripple reduction in a switched-capacitor circuit.

A description is presented of the design of a versatile analog building block, termed an operational floating conveyor (OFC). The OFC has similar transmission properties to a current-feedback op amp, but with a differential current output which allows accurate output current sampling. This feature increases device versatility and enables accurate closed loop current amplifier topologies to be realized, including an accurate closed loop current conveyor. As a further development, the technique of active compensation is applied to the OFC to achieve very high performance current amplifier topologies.

A 1.5-μm CMOS ASIC with a total complexity of over 22,000 gates has been developed to generate and keep track of the offsets within 32 circular buffers. It offers a fair arbitration of interleaved read/write operations at a maximum data transfer rate of 20 MHz. Although the device is intended for a specialized electronic warfare system application, the design features incorporated make it generic and suitable for other applications such as communications interfaces in multiprocessor systems.
