The recent development of electric vehicles and electronic equipment has resulted in a demand for portable power supply systems with high power density and life expectancy. High Temperature (HT) Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells have emerged as a possible solution to this requirement. Recent advances in the materials allow the cells to operate at higher temperatures resulting in a number of advantages. These systems still suffer from degradation mechanisms that can degrade performance and decrease the life expectancy. In order to diagnose the fuel cell performance and degradation mechanisms, impedance analysis can be performed. This paper presents a design for the power electronic hardware that can perform these analyses online for single cell applications, where the output voltage is very low. Special consideration must be given to the hardware selection and small signal injection capability. The Nyquist plots and small amplitude current step voltage response of the HTPEM fuel cell is presented along with those captured after catalyst degradation has occurred. It is shown how the online system can capture these changes by using equivalent circuits.

High energy physics, particle accelerators, and commercial semiconductor and metal treatment processes require reliable, high power, variable pulsewidth, flat top, high voltage pulses at high power. New processes for food sterilization, waste treatment, pollution control, and medical diagnostics and treatment are also being developed which also require high power, high voltage pulsed power. The technology needed to enable solid state high voltage, high power systems is now available. It has been demonstrated that solid state electronics can bring strong benefits to high voltage, high power systems design including: (a) efficiency>90%; (b) low component cost; (c) very high average and pulse power densities (>10 MW/m/sup 3/ peak power); (d) multimegawatt-level average power; (e) voltage levels from 1-150 kV; (f) average current levels from 10 A to 1200 A; (g) pulse repetition frequencies (PRFs) of 30 kHz and above (up to 400 kHz demonstrated); (h) rise and fall times as low as 250 ns; (i) variable pulse lengths (1 /spl mu/S to DC); and (j) high reliability.

The impetuous progress of the detection systems in nuclear medicine are based on major improvements of the sensitivity of the new detector systems and on the highly-integrated low-noise associated electronics, offering valuable solutions for the diagnostic of premature biological lesions. Most of the presently available detectors for nuclear medicine employ mechanical collimation, which couples the detection sensitivity to the spatial resolution. The electronic collimation of Compton cameras can overcome this drawback, but drastically reduces the efficiency due to the coincidence measurement. However, the Compton imaging systems can offer advantages over the traditional ones and the study of innovative solutions involving the newest available detectors and electronics could lead to unexpectedly good results. Our goal is to design a Compton camera based on Si-pad detectors and ASIC electronics. We performed extensive Monte Carlo simulations for systems consisting of Si-pad detectors with various thickness and pad dimensions, as well as for different geometries. The various Si-pad detectors were characterized before the bonding to the ASIC electronics and the whole assembly was subsequently tested with a VA-DAQ acquisition system from IDEAS. The results of the characterization measurements and tests will be presented

Super-resolution (SR) can promote medical diagnosis efficiency by enriching the details of captured images, such as gastroscopy and colonoscopy. However, the wireless capsule detector used for diagnosis is constrained by the camera’s low resolution and limited computing resources, making it difficult to deploy computation- and memory access-intensive SR models. In this paper, we propose an efficient universal SR accelerator based on lookup tables, namely USR-LUT, which can support various SR algorithms. We design a LUT-based computing unit (LCU) with higher efficiency and lower area overhead. By utilizing the sparsity of deconvolution, we propose an efficient data mapping scheme that can flexibly support convolution and deconvolution with different kernel sizes, achieving a 3.24× acceleration for deconvolution. Tile-based computing is adopted to reduce memory resources and external memory access (EMA) overhead. Through experimental evaluation, compared with LUT-based SR algorithms, the USR-LUT achieves the least LUT storage entries of 82k and the smallest LUT resource overhead of 0.078MB, respectively. The USR-LUT achieves the highest area efficiency of 175.7GOPS/mm 2 and throughput area ratio (TAR) of 39.9fps/mm 2 under the 8-bit precision compared with the state-of-the-art works. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work of SR accelerators adopting LUT-based computing, which is suitable for tiny mobile devices.

Digitalization, miniaturization and integration are strong drivers for further development of products for mobile communication. As such these will generally lead to lower environmental loads per product. However, the strongly increasing number of products on the market will reverse this trend for the total sector. Examinations on telephones have been carried out jointly at Philips Consumer electronics and at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM). The characteristic product parts, energy supply, display, encasing and electronic signal processing are subjected to an environmental assessment (including environmental assessment with Eco-Indicator and with the Toxic Potential Indicator IZM-TPI) and improvement potentials are shown for the selected products. The analysis shows that in mobile products, energy systems and the printed circuit boards are the key elements in further reduction of environmental loads. Both alternative substrates, lead free soldering and component selection (less hazardous substances) can contribute substantially towards this goal. These three topics are combined with further miniaturization, especially reduction of the board size, in the future. Approximately only half of the potential in this field has been implemented yet. As an overall result, it is concluded that the environmentally based load of present and future mobile products can be kept within limits if a swift implementation of Ecodesign (design for environment) is ensured.

We study the security feature of static random access memory (SRAM) against the data imprinting attack and provide a solution to protect the SRAM from this attack. There are four main contributions in this paper. First, the negative-bias temperature-instability (NBTI) degradation of PMOS transistors in the conventional SRAM cell that causes the data imprinting effect is explained. Second, the data imprinting effect that leaks the stored information in the conventional SRAM cell is investigated. Third, a novel low transistor-count transmission-gate-based master-slave SRAM cell is proposed to periodically toggle the stored data for reducing the data imprinting effect. Fourth, an efficient imprinting analysis flow is proposed to evaluate the proposed data-toggling SRAM for quantifying the data imprinting effect. Based on a 65-nm CMOS process, we implement and prototype the proposed 1k-byte data-toggling SRAM design. We perform our imprinting analysis flow on various SRAM ICs and benchmark our proposed data-toggling SRAM IC against the non-toggling SRAM IC and a commercial Lyontek SRAM IC. From the measurement results, the non-toggling SRAM and Lyontek SRAM suffer from 60% and 81% data imprinting effects, respectively, whereas our data-toggling SRAM has only 11% data imprinting effect (at 160-kHz toggling frequency). The data-toggling SRAM could switch between high security (< 5% data imprinting effect) high power mode for hardware security applications and low power (< 0.1mW) low security mode for power-saving applications. Particularly, our data-toggling SRAM could feature as low as ∼1% data imprinting effect when increasing the toggling frequency to 1.6 MHz by compromising the power dissipation. Using the image analysis flow, the stored information is revealed in both the non-toggling and Lyontek SRAM ICs but is well protected in the proposed data-toggling SRAM IC.

Geiger-mode multi-pixel APD is recognized as the best alternative solid-state photo-sensor for vacuum PMTs in various applications. Its magnetic field immunity and high gain have made it popular in MR/PET and high-energy physics detector research. In this paper, we utilized its compactness and high gain in the design of a TOF PET detector. In typical block detectors based on PMT, the full timing capability of both the PMT and scintillator could not be achieved due to the light sharing used in the Anger logic scheme. Since the Geiger-mode APD is a solid-state based technology, we can utilize one-to-one coupling between a scintillator and the photo-sensor to utilize the best timing capability of both. Also, the high photon detection efficiency of MPPC, Geiger mode APD from Hamamatsu, would help improve timing resolution. We made a block detector based on a 4 × 4 array of 3 × 3 mm 2 MPPC coupled to a 4 × 4 array of 3 × 3 × 25 mm 3 LYSO crystals to evaluate its performance. We have achieved an average energy resolution of 9% and 314ps coincidence timing resolution with very good uniformity. This shows that the solid-state based photo-sensor can be used for TOF PET detector. During the development of the detector, we recognized that a compact and low power electronic readout scheme is one of the biggest challenges, including its cost, for MPPC or other Geiger-mode APDs to be realized as products.

Due to shrinking transistor geometries, on-chip circuits are becoming vulnerable to errors, but at the same time on-chip networks are required to provide reliable services over unreliable physical interconnects. A connection oriented stochastic routing (COSR) algorithm has been used on one NoC platform that provides excellent fault-tolerance and dynamic reconfiguration capability. A probability model has been built to analyze the COSR algorithm. According to the model, the performance may be improved by implementing a self learning mechanism in each router. Thus a new adaptive stochastic routing (ASR) algorithm is proposed whereby each router learns the network status from acknowledgement flits and stores the outcomes in a routing table. Simulation of both algorithms reveals that the ASR algorithm shows a higher path reservation success rate and a larger maximal accepted traffic than the COSR algorithm. The simulations also show that the learning procedures are accurate and that both algorithms are fault-tolerant to intermittent/permanent errors.

Positron emission tomography (PET) requires accurate timing of events in order to properly discriminate between coincident and non-coincident events. The traditional solution to timing is based on custom ASIC designs, whose cost may not be justified in the design of an experimental small animal PET scanner. The new generation of PET scanners introduces the idea of continuous sampling of the detected scintillation pulse, in substitution of the event triggered acquisition systems. This approach enables new options to timing based on digital processing of the sampled pulse signal. This work proposes a time stamping algorithm based on the optically matched filter and compares the potential performance benefits of this approach versus other FIR filter designs, some of which have been already implemented by different authors. Results show that time resolution of the timestamp may be as 1 ns without the need of expensive high-speed converters when the proper processing is applied.

A novel Frequency Selective Surface composed of the intersection of the combination between a cone-shaped structure and rectangle is presented. The proposed 3D Frequency Selective Surface contains high frequency PIN Diodes which allow the reconfiguration of the transmission and reflection coefficients of the electromagnetic window in two frequencies bands of 1.45 GHz and 2.45 GHz. The design results obtained from the CST simulation software show that the proposed 3D-FSS can provide a reconfigurable frequency for the unit cell which can be used in electromagnetic switched beam antennas or in building applications.
