With the introduction of the electronic Emissions Control System (ECS) into the automobile has come the requirement to perform diagnostics and fault isolation at a level of sophistication previously unknown to the automotive service industry. The GM electronic control system is described which includes integral self-test and diagnostic aids. These features were addressed throughout the ECS concept, design and development phases, using the same system engineering techniques applied to achieving control functions. The ECS systems will include fail-operational redundancy and control software, self-test hardware, diagnostic fault isolation and self-test software, and diagnostic service aid software. The effectiveness of these features in the field will be closely monitored through a multi-divisional service structure, and data continually fed back to subsequent systems to achieve the maintainability level required of automotive transportation.

design and performance of an X-band microstrip bipolar varactor-tuned oscillator integrated with an FET amplifier is presented. Wide temperature operation (-55/spl deg/ to 71/spl deg/C), constant high power (0.5 W), low post-tuning drift (0.75 MHz) for 8 percent tuning range, and exceptionally low FM noise (-132 dB/Hz at 1 MHz) is reported.

A 25KW L-Band solid in its output stage has state RADAR transmitter which uses forty high power, parallel modules in its output stage has been developed. The high power techniques which preserve intermodule stability and efficient power combining at this power level are presented. The overall transmitter design approach and resultant characteristics are discussed.

In this paper an attempt is made to combine some well-known concepts into a new approach to solve the biasing problem in electroniccircuitsdesign. Assuming that for a particular circuit various large- and small-signal DC requirements are specified, and that at the same time there is a set of designable parameters, a way is described to obtain diagnostic information about the feasibility of the design problem as well as a procedure to compute the values of the parameters by a recursive scheme if such a scheme exists.

The tableau formulation of electronic circuit equations has been shown to be an efficient and useful formulation for circuit optimization. In this paper a tableau based formulation of the static power-flow equations for a power system is presented. Because of the explicit appearance of all quantities of interest the tableau formulation allows the general statement, and solution, of a variety of power system optimization and design problems without the need to resort to restrictive assumptions.

A key question in the design of large and complex electronicsystems is whether a given signal net list can be routed with a specified multilayer board. Up to now, approaches to the problem have been, by and large, heuristic and cut-and-try. In this study, a new approach is introduced. The essence is to decompose the complex problem into four phases, namely: vias assignment, linear placement of via columns, layering, and single-line routing. Each sub-problem can be formulated succinctly, and quasi-optimum results are obtained. An implementation program has been developed using FORTRAN on a CDC 6400 computer.

This paper describes a new nonlinear transistor model which is suitable for accurate distortion analysis of analogue circuits. A method of determining the model parameters from harmonic distortion measurements is outlined and results are presented for a 4 GHz f//T transistor. The accuracy of the model is within plus or minus 1 dB on second and third harmonic products in the frequency range 0. 5-100 MHz over a wide range of source and load impedances.
