In the modern landscape of manufacturing, the early and accurate detection of defects is pivotal to maintaining product quality and operational efficiency. This study investigates the application of multi-modal large Language Models (LLMs) in enhancing defect detection processes. Leveraging the capabilities of LLMs to interpret diverse data types, such as text and visual imagery, this research explores how these models can provide comprehensive defect analysis, and how this analysis can be used for more than just detection. Through our experiments, we demonstrate that multi-modal LLMs have the potential to detect complex visual defects without any training, although with less accuracy and speed than trained convolutional neural network-based models. Moreover, the general context and text-based communication can be useful for deriving further analytics for the production process and for training purposes. On our ceramic defect dataset, the LLMs correctly detected, but not localized, between 10% and 33% of the defects present in the analyzed images, proving that large pre-training is very comprehensive versus a mean average precision (mAP@IoU 0.5) of 0.531 for a YOLO based model. The study also delves into the challenges of integrating different data modalities and the real time constraints of defect detection with are not yet solved with multimodal LLMs, while providing legal context.

The contour tree is a tool for understanding the topological structure of a scalar field. Recent work has built efficient contour tree algorithms for shared memory parallel computation, driven by the need to analyze large data sets in situ while the simulation is running. Unfortunately, methods for using the contour tree for practical data analysis are still primarily serial, including single isocontour extraction, branch decomposition and simplification. We report data parallel methods for these tasks using a data structure called the hyperstructure and a general purpose approach called a hypersweep. We implement and integrate these methods with a Cinema database that stores features as depth images and with a web server that reconstructs the features for direct visualization.

Cluster analysis is an important technique in data analysis. However, there is no encompassing theory on scatterplots to evaluate clustering. Human visual perception is regarded as a gold standard to evaluate clustering. The cluster analysis based on human visual perception requires the participation of many probands, to obtain diverse data, and hence is a challenge to do. We contribute an empirical and data-driven study on human perception for visual clustering of large scatterplot data. First, we systematically construct and label a large, publicly available scatterplot dataset. Second, we carry out a qualitative analysis based on the dataset and summarize the influence of visual factors on clustering perception. Third, we use the labeled datasets to train a deep neural network for modeling human visual clustering perception. Our experiments show that the data-driven model successfully models the human visual perception, and outperforms conventional clustering algorithms in synthetic and real datasets.

Remote pair programming research indicates benefits for CS students, increasing productivity, code quality, teamwork, knowledge management, and morale. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the prevalence of remote pair programming. Gender gaps persist in CS classes and workplaces, which may negatively impact the way pairs coordinate, communicate, and collaborate. To understand these effects, we conducted a large-scale survey to investigate differences between men and women as well as same- and mixed-gender pairs. The survey questions were adapted from established literature on gender differences in the fields of education, communication, management, human-robotic interaction, and human-computer interaction. Quantitative analysis of the survey data using ANOVA and pairwise t-tests indicated that women participants reported their men partners made gender-based assumptions about them, and felt dominated and interrupted with men partners. Men participants felt their men partners were more rude and gave more negative feedback than women partners. Further, qualitative analysis of interviews gave insights to several challenges CS students face in same and mixed-gender pairs when programming remotely. Our findings have implications for researchers, practitioners, and educators to promote gender inclusivity in collaborative environments.

A non-fungible token (NFT) is a data unit stored on the blockchain. Nowadays, more and more investors and collectors (NFT traders), who participate in transactions of NFTs, have an urgent need to assess the performance of NFTs. However, there are two challenges for NFT traders when analyzing the performance of NFT. First, the current rarity models have flaws and are sometimes not convincing. In addition, NFT performance is dependent on multiple factors, such as images (high-dimensional data), history transactions (network), and market evolution (time series). It is difficult to take comprehensive consideration and analyze NFT performance efficiently. To address these challenges, we propose NFTVis, a visual analysis system that facilitates assessing individual NFT performance. A new NFT rarity model is proposed to quantify NFTs with images. Four well-coordinated views are designed to represent the various factors affecting the performance of the NFT. Finally, we evaluate the usefulness and effectiveness of our system using two case studies and user studies.

XR devices running chat-bots powered by large Language Models (LLMs) have the to become always-on agents that enable much better productivity scenarios. Current screen based chat-bots do not take advantage of the the full-suite of natural inputs available in XR, including inward facing sensor data, instead they over-rely on explicit voice or text prompts, sometimes paired with multi-modal data dropped as part of the query. We propose a solution that leverages an attention framework that derives context implicitly from user actions, eye-gaze, and contextual memory within the XR environment. Our work minimizes the need for engineered explicit prompts, fostering grounded and intuitive interactions that glean user insights for the chat-bot.

Augmented Reality (AR) has been shown to enhance the data visualization and analysis process by supporting users in their immersive exploration of data in a real-world context. However, authoring such visualizations still heavily relies on traditional, stationary desktop setups, which inevitably separates users from the actual working space. To better support the authoring process in immersive environments, we propose the integration of spatially-aware mobile devices. Such devices also enable precise touch interaction for data configuration while lowering the entry barriers of novel immersive technologies. We therefore contribute an initial set of concepts within a scenario for authoring AR visualizations. We implemented an early prototype for configuring visualizations in-situ on the mobile device without programming and report our first impressions.

Facing massive Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, the challenge of achieving rapid and efficient data processing has garnered attention. Currently, most time-series InSAR processing solutions are designed to operate on a single computing platform, leading to drawbacks such as inflexible deployment and slow data transmission. Leveraging the open-source Kubernetes platform, we have employed cloud-native technology to deploy a cross-platform, multi-level parallelization algorithm across multiple nodes. The algorithm is designed based on modular concept, and its modules can successfully achieve cross-platform deployment by relying on both the Network File System (NFS) protocol and the Common Internet File System (CFIS) protocol. This overcomes the limitations of the previous data file storage system, which solely depended on the NFS protocol, leading to deployment on a single operating system. Deploying the algorithm on different operating systems, our results show that the speeds of Linux platform's algorithm parallel modules were improved 16% and 30%, respectively. The successful cross-platform operation of the algorithm enables the data processing workflow to assimilate the strengths of different operating platforms, enhancing data visualization capabilities and gaining support from diverse platform resources. This introduces a new approach for large-scale time-series InSAR processing.

In recent years, the research on the layout and performance evaluation of urban financial services have been a hot and forward issue in the field of econometric research. With the rapid development of the economy and technology, the strength of domestic large commercial banks have been constantly enhanced, which plays an important role in supporting and guaranteeing the development of the local economy and the improvement of people's living standards. At the same time, the competition among commercial banks is becoming more and more fierce. Trying to find out the geographical distribution characteristics of the existing commercial banks in the core cities can not only help the urban financial function planning and management decision-makers arrange the layout of existing banks to serve the real economy and the public life;but also improve the performance of commercial banks. Based on the complex network analysis and visualization analysis method, by using the geographic information data visualization technology, firstly, this paper analyzes the main factors that affect the distribution of outlets of state-owned commercial banks in Wuhan. Our results show that the distribution of outlets of state-owned commercial banks in Wuhan has a significant positive correlation with the output value of the tertiary industry and the number of permanent residents. It also has a significant negative correlation with the output value of the secondary industry. At the same time, by using the data visualization method, we analyzed the geographical distribution characteristics of Wuhan state-owned commercial banks. Secondly, the network of competition reciprocity relationships among outlets was constructed. Finally, this paper gave a quantitative analysis of the digital characteristics of the competition reciprocity network among the existing state-owned commercial banks in Wuhan. Chiplet-based 3DICs have emerged as modular solutions for large-scale, high-performance computing systems. However, unlike monolithic Network-on-Chips (NoCs), 3DICs using active interposers encounter difficulties in managing heterogeneous and high-load network traffic patterns. The emerging field of Networks-on-Active-Interposer (NOAI), independently designed from top dies' interconnects, is desired to address these challenges by supporting flexible topologies, low-latency memory access, and reduced traffic congestion. To satisfy the requirements, we propose a heterogeneous dual-layer interconnect architecture, EIGEN, for chiplet-interposer systems, along with a reinforcement learning (RL)-based routing framework, which can provide efficient and flexible communication for chiplet-based 3DICs. EIGEN features an application-aware switch-programable interconnection layer (AspLayer) and a dynamic packet-routing interconnection layer (DynLayer) on the interposer, respectively. To optimize inter-chiplet data communication, we also develop an RL-based path routing framework tailored to this dual-layer architecture. The RL framework's state space includes topology, network, and memory metrics, while the RL reward is set as the product of average packet latency and link utilization. The effectiveness of EIGEN is demonstrated through different applications where CPU, GPU, and AI accelerator chiplets are integrated via NOAI. Simulation results show that the proposed EIGEN achieves up to {6 7. 1 6%} latency reduction, {5 3. 8 9%} hops reduction and {1 1. 2 1%} runtime reduction compared to the state-of-the-art (SOTA) chiplets interconnect architectures. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis of network scaling shows that the EIGEN architecture and framework exhibit strong scalability, with latency reduction of {2 0. 9 6%} to {5 2. 7 7%} and hop reduction of {1 9. 7 2%} to {4 3. 4 1%} as the system scales from 4 × 4 to 32 × 32 chiplets. © 2025 ieee.
