JPL's Remote Interactive visualization and analysis System (RIVA) is described in detail. RIVA's kernel is a highly scalable perspective renderer tailored especially for the demands of large datasets beyond the sensible reach of workstations. The algorithmic details of this renderer are described, particularly the aspects key to achieving the algorithm's overall scalability. The paper summarizes the performance achieved for machine sizes up to more than 500 nodes and for initial input image/terrain bases of up to a gigabyte. The RIVA system integrates workstation graphics, massively parallel computing technology, and gigabit communication networks to provide a flexible interactive environment for scientific data perusal, analysis and visualization. Early experience with using RIVA to interactively explore multivariate datasets is reported and some example results given.

Recently, construction of physical maps based on YAC and cosmid contigs has become increasingly common, since these maps serve as a fine-scale ordering basis for gene searches. We describe a combination of visualization and database tools that address this problem. The YAC-Cosmid contig tool is a map visualization and editing tool designed for large data sets. The Physical Map Assembler (PMA) uses a rule-based interval-ordering approach to infer ordering from experimental data. It is implemented as an active object-oriented database. The PMA visualizer displays interval orderings in a comprehensible fashion, and thus helps the scientist resolve conflicts and ambiguities identified by PMA. Both visualization tools let the user query the database to see the details behind the picture. We have found that a tight integration of visualization and analysis tools with the database enhances their usability, and speeds up the dual tasks of analyzing and understanding the experimental data. The use of our tools is illustrated by examples from a gene search at the University of Michigan Genome Center. © 1995 ieee.

visualizations which depict entire information spaces provide context for navigation and browsing tasks; however, the limited size of the display screen makes creating effective global views difficult. We have developed a technique for displaying and navigating large information spaces. The key concept is the use of an information mural, a two-dimensional reduced representation of an entire information space that fits completely within a display window or screen. Information murals use grayscale shading and color along with anti-aliasing techniques to create a miniature version of the entire data set. By incorporating navigational capabilities, information murals become a tool that can be used as a global view along with more detailed informational displays. Information murals are utilized in our software visualization research to help depict the execution of object-oriented programs, and can also be used in more general information visualization applications.

In this paper we consider several hardware implementations of the general-purpose atomic primitives fetch and /spl Phi/, compare and swap, load linked, and store conditional on large-scale shared-memory multiprocessors. These primitives have proven popular on small-scale bets-based machines, but have yet to become widely available on large-scale, distributed shared memory machines. We propose several alternative hardware implementations of these primitives, and then analyze the performance of these implementations for various data sharing patterns. Our results indicate that good overall performance can be obtained by implementing compare and swap in the cache controllers, and by providing an additional instruction to load an exclusive copy of a cache line.< >

Over the last few years, dramatic increases and advances in mass storage for both secondary and tertiary storage made possible the handling of big amounts of data (for example, satellite data, complex scientific experiments, and so on). However, to the full use of these advances, metadata for data analysis and interpretation, as well as the complexity of managing and accessing large datasets through intelligent and efficient methods, are still considered to be the main challenges to the information-science community when dealing with large databases. Scientific data must be analyzed and interpreted by metadata, which has a descriptive role for the underlying data. Metadata can be, partly, a priori definable according to the domain of discourse under consideration (for example, atmospheric chemistry) and the conceptualization of the information system to be built. It may also be extracted by using learning methods from time-series measurement and observation data. In this paper, a knowledge-based management system (KBMS) is presented for the extraction and management of metadata in order to bridge the gap between data and information. The KBMS is a component of an intelligent information system based upon a federated architecture, also including a database management system for time-series-oriented data and a visualization system.

dataSpace is a system for interactive 3-D visualization and analysis of large databases. dataSpace utilizes the display space by placing panels of information, possibly generated by different visualization applications, in a 3-D graph layout, and providing continuous navigation facilities. Selective rearrangements and transparency can be used to reduce occlusion or to compare or merge a set of images (e.g. line graphs or scatter plots) that are aligned and stacked in depth. A prototype system supporting the basic 3-D graphic operations (layout, zoom, rotation, translation, transparency) has been implemented. We provide several illustrative examples of dataSpace displays taken from the current system. We present the 3-D display paradigm, describe the query, layout and rendering steps required to create a display, and discuss some performance issues.

In the research described, we have constructed a tightly coupled set of methods for monitoring, steering, and applying visual analysis to large scale simulations. The work shows how a collaborative, interdisciplinary process that teams application and computer scientists can result in a powerful integrated approach. The integrated design allows great flexibility in the development and use of analysis tools. The work also shows that visual analysis is a necessary component for full understanding of spatially complex, time dependent atmospheric processes.

There have been some new developments of an interactive analysis for the multi-spectral images. Recently the authors have proposed an interactive analysis method for classification using a Hilbert curve which is a one-to-one mapping and takes a neighborhood between N-dimensional space and one-dimensional space into consideration. In order to analyze large scale multi-spectral images, the authors divide a large scale image into subimages which can be analyzed using their proposed method. A problem is that after classifying one of the subimages, how they classify the rest of the subimages using this result effectively. They present a solution of this problem using a tree structure expression. They assign a reliability measure to each pixels on the rest. The reliability measure is based on a distance from a center of a cluster, and the center is considered occurrence information. For the low reliable data, they apply their interactive analysis method for classification again. In the experiment using a LANDSAT image data, they confirmed the effectiveness of the reliability measure because category boundaries on the rest have lower reliability.

We present a new parallel sorting algorithm that uses a fixed-size sorter iteratively to sort inputs of arbitrary size. A parallel sorting architecture based on this algorithm is proposed. This architecture consists of three components, linear arrays that support constant-time operations, a multilevel sorting network, and a termination detection tree, cell operating concurrently in systolic processing fashion. The structure of this sorting architecture is simple and regular, highly suitable for VLSI realization. Theoretical analysis and experimental data indicate that the performance of this architecture is likely to be excellent in practice.

A set of applications has been developed for volumic medical image display and analysis in PET and MRI. Although the set may appear at first glance, as a implementation in X-Windows of a package previously developed at CTI under SunView, major improvements have been added to its functionality. All graphical user interfaces have been developed with InterViews, a public domain C++ library on top of X-Windows, in an effort to standardize the look and feel of all applications. They run on SUN/Spare and Digital UNIX workstations and support CTI ECAT and Interfile image formats. They are presently used on a daily basis for multimodal image display and analysis in the authors' laboratory. These applications are: (i) iv-colortool: a color lookup table server for multimodality image display which can be loaded with external tables when displaying fusion data, (ii) iv-volumetool: an orthogonal viewer which allows visualization of multiframe volumes as large as whole body studies. Multiple instances of the application can be created with linked cursors, a useful feature for visualizing coregistered studies, (iii) iv-heartool: an orthogonal viewer which allows heart volume reorientation along the long axis and generation of short axis slices on multiframe studies and (iv) iv-brain-align: an orthogonal viewer which allows rigid transformation of dynamic multi-tracer brain data. All applications can be controlled through a command language interface using UNIX keywords to control input/output and parameters. This feature allows their direct use from acquisitions scripts on CTI PET scanners controlled with System 7.
