For lack of local graphics hardware, general purpose massively parallel computer can hardly be used to quickly visualize the large-scale locally generated datasets with hardware-accelerated volume rendering technique. In this paper, we presented a hybrid parallel rendering scheme take advantage of the background massively parallel computer and front-end distributed graphics workstations. The streams of OpenGL rendering commands are issued from the multiprocessors of parallel machine, and the GPU-based volume rendering is executed on the remote multi-workstations. The entropy based remote data reduction is used to extract features from the massive datasets, which contributed to the reducing of the data transfer delays during remote rendering. The image compositing is performed on parallel computer to get better communication performance. Hybrid rendering performance can be further improved by overlapping rendering, compositing and display process with parallel pipeline technology. Experimental results show that our hybrid parallel rendering scheme proposed in this paper can reach interactive rates while rendering 17 GB volume dataset in the massively parallel environment.

parallel computing is applied in computed tomography to shorten the imaging time and achieves outstanding effects. But image reconstruction algorithm remains to be significantly time-consuming when faced with the large data sets which decreases the efficiency of imaging process. Single graphic card cannot solve this problem because of the limitation on video memory. This paper presents a parallel method for FDK algorithm using multi-GPU based cluster system. In the method, the cluster system is divided into three levels: nodes, GPUs and single GPU. Corresponding parallel strategies are designed for different levels according to the algorithm characteristics and hardware structures. The experiments show that the multi-GPU based cluster system is able to achieve the same precision with the single node meanwhile it will gain higher speedup ratio with the increasing number of nodes or GPUs. The computing time of whole reconstruction reduces to almost half of the origin by doubling the computing devices.

Geospatial data exists in a variety of formats, including rasters, vector data, and large-scale geospatial databases. There exists an ever-growing number of sensors that are collecting this data, resulting in the explosive growth and scale of high-resolution remote sensing geospatial data collections. A particularly challenging domain of geospatial data processing involves mining information from high resolution remote sensing imagery. The prevalence of high-resolution raster geospatial data collections represents a significant data challenge, as a single remote sensing image is composed of hundreds of millions of pixels. We have developed a robust application framework which exploits graphics processing unit (GPU) clusters to perform high-throughput geospatial data processing. We process geospatial raster data concurrently across tiles of large geospatial data rasters, utilizing GPU co-processors driven by CPU threads to extract refined geospatial information. The framework can produce output rasters or perform image information mining to write data into a geospatial database.

The realistic simulation of ultrasound wave propagation is computationally intensive. The large size of the grid and low degree of reuse of data means that it places a great demand on memory bandwidth. graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have attracted attention for performing scientific calculations due to their potential for efficiently performing large numbers of floating point computations. However, many applications may be limited by memory bandwidth, especially for data sets whose size is larger than that of the GPU platform. This problem is only partially mitigated by applying the standard technique of breaking the grid into regions and overlapping the computation of one region with the host-device memory transfer of another. In this paper, we implement a memory-bound GPU-based ultrasound simulation and evaluate the use of a technique for improving performance by compressing the data into a fixed-point representation that reduces the time required for inter-host- device transfers. We demonstrate a speedup of 1.5 times on a simulation where the data is broken into regions that must be copied back and forth between the CPU and GPU. We develop a model that can be used to determine the amount of temporal blocking required to achieve near optimal performance, without extensive experimentation. This technique may also be applied to GPU-based scientific simulations in other domains such as computational fluid dynamics and electromagnetic wave simulation.

mprovements in computer technology have spawned an exponential growth in both the scope and volume of data collection, as well as a corresponding shortage of capable analysts. This applies not just to scientists, but also to consumers who are gaining unprecedented access to data from their cars, homes, phones, and other devices. Meanwhile, visualization has emerged as an effective tool for exploring and gathering insight from large quantities of data. However, constructing effective visualizations is often difficult, and current tools often lack either the flexibility to extend to custom problem domains or else require low-level graphics programming expertise to generate even simple visualizations. Furthermore, most solutions are ad hoc, preventing users from transforming and evolving visualizations, instead forcing them into a rigid, linear workflow. One possible approach to solving these problems is through the definition of a domain-specific language (DSL). This approach offers a number of potential advantages, the most immediate being flexibility. A visualization DSL could support multiple levels of abstraction at once, each of which could be targeted at different user needs and expertise levels. This, in turn, could allow users with varying levels of expertise to make use of the abstraction layers they find most appropriate, and support the creation of simple and common visualizations without sacrificing the option for more detailed control when necessary. This layering could also allow implementation details to be hidden when desired. Pixel position information, for example, could be hidden behind a scalable and unitless environment which would allow the user to place and size visualization components in relation to one another.

We propose an approach suitable to learn multiple time-varying models jointly and discuss an application in data-driven weather forecasting. The methodology relies on spectral regularization and encodes the typical multi-task learning assumption that models lie near a common low dimensional subspace. The arising optimization problem amounts to estimating a matrix from noisy linear measurements within a trace norm ball. Depending on the problem, the matrix dimensions as well as the number of measurements can be large. We discuss an algorithm that can handle large-scale problems and is amenable to parallelization. We then compare high level high performance implementation strategies that rely on Just-in-Time (JIT) decorators. The approach enables, in particular, to offload computations to a GPU without hard-coding computationally intensive operations via a low-level language. As such, it allows for fast prototyping and therefore it is of general interest for developing and testing novel computational models.

The growing power of supercomputers continues to improve scientists' ability to model larger, more sophisticated problems in science with higher accuracy. An equally important ability is to make full use of the data output from the simulations to help clarify the modeled phenomena and facilitate the discovery of new phenomena. However, along with the scale of computation, the size of the resulting data has exploded;it becomes infeasible to output most of the data, which defeats the purpose of conducting large-scale simulations. In order to address this issue so that more data may be archived and studied, we have developed a scalable parallel data compression solution to reduce the size of large-scale data with low computational cost and minimal error. We use the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method to compress data because this method can effectively extract the main features from the data, and the resulting compressed data can be decompressed in linear time. Our implementation achieves high parallel efficiency with a binary load-distributed approach, which is similar to the binary-swap image composition method. This approach allows us to effectively use all of the processors and to reduce the interprocessor communication cost throughout the parallel compression calculations. Hardware Accelerators are playing increasingly important roles in achieving desired performance from desktop to cluster computing. While General Purpose computing on graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) technologies have been widely applied to computing intensive applications, there is relatively little work on using GPUs and GPU-accelerated clusters for data intensive computing that typically involves significant irregular data accesses. In this study, we report our designs and implementations of a popular geospatial operation called Zonal Histogramming on Nvidia GPUs. Given a zonal dataset in the form of a collection of polygons and a geospatial raster that can be considered as a 2D grid, for each polygon, Zonal Histogramming computes a histogram of the values of raster cells that fall within the polygon. Our experiments on 3000+ US counties (polygons) over 20+ billion NASA Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) 30 meter resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) raster cells have shown that, an impressive 46 seconds end-to-end runtime can be achieved using a single Nvidia GTX Titan GPU device. The runtime is further reduced to similar to 10 seconds using 8 nodes on ORNL's Titan GPU-accelerated cluster. The desired high performance opens many possibilities for large-scale geospatial computing that is important for environmental and climate research.

We present a complete, robust and simple to use hardware and software stack delivering remote parallel rendering of complex geometrical and volumetric models to high resolution tiled display walls in a production environment. We describe the setup and configuration, present preliminary benchmarks showing interactive framerates, and describe our contributions for a seamless integration of all the software components.
