Rapid Serial Visual Presentation is an effective approach for browsing and searching large amounts of data. By presenting subsequent images at high frequency, we utilize the perceptual abilities of the human visual system to rapidly process certain visual features. While this concept is successfully used in video and image browsing, we demonstrate how it can be applied to dynamic graph visualization. In this paper, we introduce a visualization technique for time-varying graphs that is scalable with respect to the number of time steps. The graph visualization is based on the parallel Edge Splatting technique, which employs a space-efficient display of a sequence of dynamically changing graphs. To illustrate the usefulness of our approach we analyzed method call graphs recorded during the execution of the open source software system JHotDraw. Furthermore, we studied a time-varying social network representing researchers and their dynamic communication structure while attending the ACM Hypertext 2009 conference.

ISP: An Optimal Out-of-Core Image-Set Processing Streaming Architecture for parallel Heterogeneous Systems

Image population analysis is the class of statistical methods that plays a central role in understanding the development, evolution, and disease of a population. However, these techniques often require excessive computational power and memory that are compounded with a large number of volumetric inputs. Restricted access to supercomputing power limits its influence in general research and practical applications. In this paper we introduce ISP, an Image-Set Processing streaming framework that harnesses the processing power of commodity heterogeneous CPU/GPU systems and attempts to solve this computational problem. In ISP, we introduce specially designed streaming algorithms and data structures that provide an optimal solution for out-of-core multiimage processing problems both in terms of memory usage and computational efficiency. ISP makes use of the asynchronous execution mechanism supported by parallel heterogeneous systems to efficiently hide the inherent latency of the processing pipeline of out-of-core approaches. Consequently, with computationally intensive problems, the ISP out-of-core solution can achieve the same performance as the in-core solution. We demonstrate the efficiency of the ISP framework on synthetic and real datasets.

Analysis and visualization of the data generated by scientific simulation codes is a key step in enabling science from computation. However, a number of challenges lie along the current hardware and software paths to scientific discovery. First, only advanced parallelism techniques can take full advantage of the unprecedented scale of coming machines. In addition, as computational improvements outpace those of I/O, more data will be discarded and I/O-heavy analysis will suffer. Furthermore, the limited memory environment, particularly in the context of in situ analysis which can sidestep some I/O limitations, will require efficiency of both algorithms and infrastructure. Finally, advanced simulation codes with complex data models require commensurate data models in analysis tools. However, community visualization and analysis tools designed for parallelism and large data fall short in a number of these areas. In this paper, we describe EAVL, a new library with infrastructure and algorithms designed to address these critical needs for current and future generations of scientific software and hardware. We show results from EAVL demonstrating the strengths of its robust data model, advanced parallelism, and efficiency. © The Eurographics Association 2012.

Multidimensional multivariate data can be visualized using many different well-known charts, such as bar charts, stacked bar charts, grouped bar charts, scatterplots, or pivot tables, or also using more advanced highdimensional techniques such as scatterplot matrices (SPLOMs) or parallel coordinate plots (PCPs). These many techniques have different advantages, and users may wish to use several charts or data graphics to understand a dataset from different perspectives. We present ConnectedCharts, a technique for displaying relationships between multiple charts. ConnectedCharts allow for hybrid combinations of bar charts, scatterplots, and parallel coordinates, with curves drawn to show the conceptual links between charts. The charts can be thought of as coordinated views, where linking is achieved not only through interactive brushing, but also with explicitly drawn curves that connect corresponding data tuples or axes. We present a formal description of a design space of many simple charts, and also identify different kinds of connections that can be displayed between related charts. Our prototype implementation demonstrates how the connections between multiple charts can make relationships clearer and can serve to document the history of a user's analytical process, leading to potential applications in visual analytics and dashboard design. © 2012 The Author(s).

Ray tracing in scientific visualization allows for substantial gains in performance and rendering quality with large scale polygonal datasets compared to brute-force rasterization, however implementing new rendering architectures into existing tools is often costly and time consuming. This paper presents a library, GLuRay, which intercepts OpenGL calls from many common visualization applications and renders them with the CPU ray tracer Manta without modification to the underlying visualization tool. Rendering polygonal models such as isosurfaces can be done identically to an OpenGL implementation using provided material and camera properties or superior rendering can be achieved using enhanced settings such as dielectric materials or pinhole cameras with depth of field effects. Comparative benchmarks were conducted on the Texas Advanced Computing Center's Longhorn cluster using the popular visualization packages ParaView, VisIt, Ensight, and VAPOR. Through the parallel rendering package ParaView, scaling up to 64 nodes is demonstrated. With our tests we show that using OpenGL interception to accelerate and enhance visualization programs provides a viable enhancement to existing tools with little overhead and no code modification while allowing for the creation of publication quality renderings using advanced effects and greatly improved large-scale software rendering performance within tools that scientists are currently using. © The Eurographics Association 2012.

parallel image compositing has been widely studied over the past 20 years, as this is one, if not the most, crucial element in the implementation of a scalable parallel rendering system. Many algorithms have been proposed and implemented on a large variety of supercomputers. Among the existing supercomputers, InfiniBand (IB) PC clusters, and their associated fat-tree topology, are clearly becoming the dominant architecture, as they provide the scalability, high bandwidth and low latency required by the most demanding parallel applications. Surprisingly, very few efforts have been devoted to the implementation and performance evaluation of parallel image compositing algorithms on this kind of architecture. We propose in this paper a new parallel image compositing algorithm, called Shift-Based, relying on a well-known communication pattern called shift permutation. Indeed, shift permutation is one of the possible ways to get the maximum cross bisectional bandwidth provided by an IB fat-tree cluster. We show that our Shift-Based algorithm scales on any number of processing nodes (with peak performance on specific counts), allows overlapping communications with computations and exhibits contentionfree network communications. This is demonstrated with the image compositing of very high resolution images at interactive frame rates. © The Eurographics Association 2012.

The ISO/IEC JPEG 2000 image coding standard is a family of source coding algorithms targeting high-resolution image communications. JPEG 2000 features highly scalable embedded coding features that allow one to interactively zoom out to reduced resolution thumbnails of enormous data sets or to zoom in on highly localized regions of interest with very economical communications and rendering requirements. While intended for fixed-precision input data, the implementation of the irreversible version of the standard is often done internally in floating point arithmetic. Moreover, the standard is designed to support high-bit-depth data. Part 2 of the standard also provides support for three-dimensional data sets such as multicomponent or volumetric imagery. These features make JPEG 2000 an appealing candidate for highly scalable communications coding and visualization of two- and three-dimensional data produced by scientific simulation software. We present results of initial experiments applying JPEG 2000 to scientific simulation data produced by the parallel Ocean Program (POP) global ocean circulation model, highlighting both the promise and the many challenges this approach holds for scientific visualization applications. © 2012 ieee.
