parallel computing is increasingly used to provide more performance to applications that need tremendous computational power. The main characteristics of distributed parallel machines are heterogeneity, dynamism and size. They influence directly the way the application and platform monitoring tasks are performed, especially when analyzing a large quantity of information collected in a topologically complex machine. This paper describes our efforts to provide parallel programmers and Grid users a new way to visualize monitoring data. Using graphics in three dimensions and information visualization techniques, we aim at bringing rich topological information to the rendered scene. It results in an immersible and human readable representation of complex monitoring data, suited to Grid environments. We first review known techniques in information visualization context, especially those that address the case of hierarchical information, and we discuss about their use in our context. Then, we propose a new 3D approach that combines the classical space-time visualization of application traces with the representation of the applicationpsilas communication pattern. Finally, we present experimental results obtained through the visualization of parallel applications in our prototype.

Extensions of parallel Coordinates for Interactive Exploration of large Multi-Timepoint data Sets

parallel coordinate plots (PCPs) are commonly used in information visualization to provide insight into multi-variate data. These plots help to spot correlations between variables. PCPs have been successfully applied to unstructured datasets up to a few millions of points. In this paper, we present techniques to enhance the usability of PCPs for the exploration of large, multi-timepoint volumetric data sets, containing tens of millions of points per timestep. The main difficulties that arise when applying PCPs to large numbers of data points are visual clutter and slow performance, making interactive exploration infeasible. Moreover, the spatial context of the volumetric data is usually lost. We describe techniques for preprocessing using data quantization and compression, and for fast GPU-based rendering of PCPs using joint density distributions for each pair of consecutive variables, resulting in a smooth, continuous visualization. Also, fast brushing techniques are proposed for interactive data selection in multiple linked views, including a 3D spatial volume view. These techniques have been successfully applied to three large data sets: Hurricane Isabel (Vis'04 contest), the ionization front instability data set (Vis'08 design contest), and data from a large-eddy simulation of cumulus clouds. With these data, we show how PCPs can be extended to successfully visualize and interactively explore multi-timepoint volumetric datasets with an order of magnitude more data points.

Performance analysis tools based on event tracing are important for understanding the complex computational activities and communication patterns in high performance applications. The purpose of these tools is to help applications scale well to large numbers of processors. However, the tools themselves have to be scalable. As application problem sizes grow larger to exploit larger machines, the volume of performance trace data generated becomes unmanagable especially as we scale to tens of thousands of processors. Simultaneously, at analysis time, the amount of information that has to be presented to a human analyst can also become overwhelming. This paper investigates the effectiveness of employing heuristics and clustering techniques in a scalability framework to determine a subset of processors whose detailed event traces should be retained. It is a form of compression where we retain information from processors with high signal content. We quantify the reduction in the volume of performance trace data generated by NAMD, a molecular dynamics simulation application implemented using CHARM++. We show that, for the known performance problem of poor application grainsize, the quality of the trace data preserved by this approach is sufficient to highlight the problem.

As more hypermedia information becomes available online, we are looking for new and better ways for users to interact with and to explore that information. The WIMP style of interaction is slowly becoming inadequate for users to make sense of the large amounts of information. New display configurations and input devices may help but usability with (abstract) hypermedia information is questionable. We describe an approach to study the effects of virtual environments characteristics on hypermedia information navigation. We focus on Web-based documents.

visualization is a research tool that computational scientists use for qualitative exploration, hypothesis verification, and result presentation. Driven by needs for large user groups to collaborate across geographical distances, visualization must now also serve as an effective means to share concrete data as well as abstract ideas over the Internet. Yet there is simply no expeditious and practical way for users collaborating in this wide area to share large visualizations in a dynamic fashion. Using distributed heterogeneous resources as a basic parallel infrastructure to compute visualization could provide great potential usability, scalability, and cost efficiency. To justify our viewpoint, we describe a sample system of this nature and demonstrate its efficacy with a recently generated real-world large data set

Time dependent processing in a parallel pipeline architecture

Pipeline architectures provide a versatile and efficient mechanism for constructing visualizations, and they have been implemented in numerous libraries and applications over the past two decades. In addition to allowing developers and users to freely combine algorithms, visualization pipelines have proven to work well when streaming data and scale well on parallel distributed-memory computers. However, current pipeline visualization frameworks have a critical flaw: they are unable to manage time varying data. As data flows through the pipeline, each algorithm has access to only a single snapshot in time of the data. This prevents the implementation of algorithms that do any temporal processing such as particle tracing;plotting over time;or interpolation, fitting, or smoothing of time series data. As data acquisition technology improves, as simulation time-integration techniques become more complex, and as simulations save less frequently and regularly, the ability to analyze the time-behavior of data becomes more important. This paper describes a modification to the traditional pipeline architecture that allows it to accommodate temporal algorithms. Furthermore, the architecture allows temporal algorithms to be used in conjunction with algorithms expecting a single time snapshot, thus simplifying software design and allowing adoption into existing pipeline frameworks. Our architecture also continues to work well in parallel distributed-memory environments. We demonstrate our architecture by modifying the popular VTK framework and exposing the functionality to the ParaView application. We use this framework to apply time-dependent algorithms on large data with a parallel cluster computer and thereby exercise a functionality that previously did not exist.

An efficient and scalable parallel algorithm for out-of-core isosurface extraction and rendering

We consider the problem of isosurface extraction and rendering for large scale time-varying data. Such data sets have been appearing at an increasing rate especially from physics-based simulations, and can range in size from hundreds of gigabytes to tens of terabytes. Isosurface extraction and rendering is one of the most widely used visualization techniques to explore and analyze such data sets. A common strategy for isosurface extraction involves the determination of the so-called active cells followed by a triangulation of these cells based on linear interpolation, and ending with a rendering of the triangular mesh. We develop a new simple indexing scheme for out-of-core processing of large scale data sets, which enables the identification of the active cells extremely quickly, using more compact indexing structure and more effective bulk data movement than previous schemes. Moreover, our scheme leads to an efficient and scalable implementation on multiprocessor environments in which each processor has access to its own local disk. In particular, our parallel algorithm provably achieves load balancing across the processors independent of the isovalue, with almost no overhead in the total amount of work relative to the sequential algorithm. We conduct a large number of experimental tests on the University of Maryland visualization Cluster using the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability data set, and obtain results that consistently validate the efficiency and the scalability of our algorithm. Synthetic Aperture Radar data presents specific problems for interactive visualization. The high amount of multiplicative speckle noise has to be reduced. The high dynamic range of the amplitude data must be mapped to the lower dynamic range of display devices in a way that makes image features appropriately visible. In addition to interactive navigation in the data, it is desirable to allow interactive selection of despeckling and dynamic range reduction methods and adjustment of their parameters. graphics processing units (GFUs) can be seen as ubiquitous parallel coprocessors with extreme computational power. In this paper, we propose a GPU-based framework for interactive visualization of SAR data. data management techniques are used to make full use of the GFU. We reworked well-known despeckling and dynamic range reduction techniques for the GPU programming model and implemented them in our framework. Both navigation in large data sets and adjustment of processing parameters are fully interactive. © 2007 ieee.

The ability to interactively visualize the complex products of three-dimensional simulations is a key aspect in the validation and verification process of numerical algorithms and frameworks. Computational astrophysics, which benefits from the rapidly increasing computing resources offered by the use of massively parallel mainframes, is a challenging playground to scientific visualization. In this paper, we describe a graphical package developed in the framework of IDL Object graphics. The requirements governing its design are defined in the context of the COAST software project which aims at providing an ensemble of enabling tools and techniques for the development and the validation of major simulation codes. This covers a wide range of applications, including cosmological formation of large-scale structures, turbulences in the interstellar medium, stellar magnetohydrodynamics, and formation of proto-planetary systems. The use of IDL Object graphics provides an interactive and immersive visualization of complex scenes where various fields of different nature are entangled. Three-dimensional scalar and vector fields distributed over regular mesh grids or more complex structures such as Adaptive Mesh Refinement data, as well as N-body systems, can be visualized in a number of different, complementary ways.
