We present GyVe, an interactive visualization tool for understanding structure in sparse three-dimensional (3D) point data. The scientific goal driving the tool's development is to determine the presence of filaments and voids as defined by inferred 3D galaxy positions within the Horologium-Reticulum supercluster (HRS). GyVe provides visualization techniques tailored to examine structures defined by the intercluster galaxies. Specific techniques include: interactive user control to move between a global overview and local viewpoints, labelled axes and curved drop lines to indicate positions in the astronomical RA-DEC-cz coordinate system, torsional rocking and stereo to enhance 3D perception, and geometrically distinct glyphs to show potential correlation between intercluster galaxies and known clusters. We discuss the rationale for each design decision and review the success of the techniques in accomplishing the scientific goals. In practice, GyVe has been useful for gaining intuition about structures that were difficult to perceive with 2D projection techniques alone. For example, during their initial session with GyVe, our collaborators quickly confirmed scientific conclusions regarding the large-scale structure of the HRS previously obtained over months of study with 2D projections and statistical techniques. Further use of GyVe revealed the spherical shape of voids and showed that a presumed filament was actually two disconnected structures.

We consider the problem of isosurface extraction and rendering for large scale time varying data. Such datasets have been appearing at an increasing rate especially from physics-based simulations, and can range in size from hundreds of gigabytes to tens of terabytes. We develop a new simple indexing scheme, which makes use of the concepts of the interval tree and the span space data structures. The new scheme enables isosurface extraction and rendering in I/O optimal time, using more compact indexing structure and more effective bulk data movement than the previous schemes. Moreover, our indexing scheme can be easily extended to a multiprocessor environment in which each processor has access to its own local disk. The resulting parallel algorithm is provably efficient and scalable. That is, it achieves load balancing across the processors independent of the isovalue, with almost no overhead in the total amount of work relative to the sequential algorithm. We conduct a large number of experimental tests on the University of Maryland visualization Cluster using the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability dataset, and obtain results that consistently validate the efficiency and the scalability of our algorithm. © 2006 ieee.

Vector field visualization approaches can broadly be categorized into approaches that directly visualize local or integrated flow and approaches that analyze the topological structure and visualize extracted features. Our goal was to come up with a method that falls into the first category, yet reveals structural information. We have developed a dense flow visualization method that shows the overall flow behavior while accentuating structural information without performing a topological analysis. Our method is based on a geometry-based flow integration step and a texture-based visual exploration step. The flow integration step generates a density field, which is written into a texture. The density field is generated by tracing particles under the influence of the underlying vector field. When using a quasi-random seeding strategy for initialization, the resulting density is high in attracting regions and low in repelling regions. Density is measured by the number of particles per region accumulated over time. We generate one density field using forward and one using backward propagation. The density fields are explored using texture-based rendering techniques. We generate the two output images separately and blend the results, which allows us to distinguish between inflow and outflow regions. We obtained dense flow visualizations that display the overall flow behavior, emphasize critical and separating regions, and indicate flow direction in the neighborhood of these regions. We have test our method for isolated first-order singularities and real data sets. © The Eurographics Association 2006.

We describe the software architecture of the Manta interactive ray tracer and describe its application in engineering and scientific visualization. Although numerous ray tracing software packages have been developed, much of the traditional design wisdom needs to be updated to provide support for interactivity, high degrees of parallelism, and modern packet-based acceleration structures. We discuss situations that are normally not considered when designing a batch ray tracer and present methods to overcome those challenges. This paper advocates a forward looking programming model for interactive ray tracing that uses reconfigurable components to achieve flexibility while achieving scalability on large numbers of processors. Manta employs data structures motivated by modern microprocessor design that can exploit instruction-level parallelism. We discuss the design tradeoffs and the performance achieved for this system

Single sectional anatomy image of Visible Chinese Human datasets achieved recently in First Military Medical University is almost 127 MByte. The total datasets are estimated to be 1.1 TByte if 48 bits color image is stored. Personal computer and graph workstation with multiple CPUs are also impossible to process extremely large datasets. Therefore the challenge is to visualize the extremely large datasets efficiently. Visible Chinese Human datasets are so massive in size they require the use of parallel computing resources for effective visualization. At present a parallel visualization program has been developed based on parallelism visualization toolkit (pVTK) on high performance cluster to solve the problem. The visualization results and performance demonstrate that the parallel program we developed provides a promising solution of handling extremely large datasets

Many large-scale scientific simulations generate large, structured multi-dimensional datasets. data is stored at various intervals on high performance I/O storage systems for checkpointing, post-processing, and visualization. data storage is very I/O intensive and can dominate the overall running time of an application, depending on the characteristics of the I/O access pattern. Our NCIO benchmark determines how I/O characteristics greatly affect performance (up to 2 orders of magnitude) and provides scientific application developers with guidelines for improvement. In this paper, we examine the impact of various I/O parameters and methods when using the MPI-IO interface to store structured scientific data in an optimized parallel file system

We implemented a pipelined rendering system that pre-renders a reduced set of a scene using the raster method built in the graphics hardware. The computation performed by the graphics card is used as an estimate for evaluating the initial traversal points for a ray caster running on the CPU. This procedure replaces the use of complex spatial subdivision structures for primary rays, offloading work that would traditionally be executed by the CPU and leaving additional system memory available for loading extra scene data. The ray traversal algorithm skips even narrow empty spaces, which are usually hard to map using conventional spatial subdivision. We achieved interactive frame rates (3-10 frames/s) running the system on a single computer with conventional hardware

The MERCW project focuses on the study of chemical munition dump sites in the Baltic Sea and Skagerrak area. Through focused site investigations an assessment will be made of the ecological risks related to the dumped warfare for the marine ecosystem and people. One of the objectives of the project is to illustrate the results from the risk assessment using innovative visualization techniques. Our aim is to develop technology to interactively analyze and explore data that is collected, simulated, and used in the project, in order to support decision-making, risk analysis, and emergency plans. The data to be considered will include detailed bathymetric maps of the sea bottom, different scalar fields defined on the 3D water volume (e.g. temperature, salinity, and concentrations of poisonous substances) as well as vector fields (e.g. sea currents). In order to achieve this goal we will apply and enhance well-established methods of terrain, volume, and flow visualization. Special emphasis will be put on fast techniques that exploit the parallel computing power of current graphics processing units (GPUs). In addition to common visualization techniques, stereo rendering in virtual environments, such as PowerWall and CAVE, will further enhance the perception and understanding of complex 3D phenomena.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of Ovid, a browser for grid-related information. The key goal of Ovid is to support the seamless navigation of users in the grid information space. Key aspects of Ovid are: (i) a set of navigational primitives, which are designed to cope with problems such as network disorientation and information overloading; (ii) a small set of Ovid views, which present the end-user with high-level, visual abstractions of grid information; these abstractions correspond to simple models that capture essential aspects of a grid infrastructure; (iii) support for embedding and implementing hyperlinks that connect related entities represented within different information views; (iv) a plug-in mechanism, which enables the seamless integration with Ovid of third-party software that retrieves and displays data from various grid information sources; and (v) a modular software design, which allows the easy integration of different visualization algorithms that support the graphical representation of large amounts of grid-related information in the context of Ovid's views
