3D graphics performance is increasing faster than any other computing application. Almost all PC systems now include 3D graphics accelerators for games, Computer Aided Design (CAD) or visualization applications. This paper investigates the suitability of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices as a low cost solution for implementing 3D affine transformations. A proposed solution based on processing large matrix multiplication has been implemented, for large 3D models, on the RC1000-PP Celoxica board based development platform using Handel-C, a C-like language supporting parallelism, flexible data size and compilation of high-level programs directly into FPGA hardware.

large number of dimensions not only cause clutter in multi-dimensional visualizations, but also make it difficult for users to navigate the data space. Effective dimension management, such as dimension ordering, spacing and filtering, is critical for visual exploration of such datasets. Dimension ordering and spacing explicitly reveal dimension relationships in arrangement-sensitive multidimensional visualization techniques, such as parallel coordinates, star glyphs, and pixel-oriented techniques. They facilitate the visual discovery of patterns within the data. Dimension filtering hides some of the dimensions to reduce clutter while preserving the major information of the dataset. In this paper, we propose an interactive hierarchical dimension ordering, spacing and filtering approach, called DOSFA. DOSFA is based on dimension hierarchies derived from similarities among dimensions. It is scalable multi-resolution approach making dimensional management a tractable task. On the one hand, it automatically generates default settings for dimension ordering, spacing and filtering. On the other hand, it allows users to efficiently control all aspects of this dimension management process via visual interaction tools for dimension hierarchy manipulation. A case study visualizing a dataset containing over 200 dimensions reveals high dimensional visualization techniques.

High-resolution computational ocean models now in production provide excellent resolution of important physical features, but the sheer size of the model output makes effective visualization challenging. We present a combination of two systems: En Vis, a suite of batch-mode visualization tools, and Hum, a parallel pipelined motion picture program. Since computational models typically run on compute platforms that do not provide any hardware acceleration for graphics, En Vis employs software rendering techniques. It creates high-resolution RGB images from an input dataset, and uses a variety of surface shading techniques that make small-scale features much more apparent to researchers than do conventional flat-shaded methods. In addition to surface shading, En Vis also uses arbitrary-resolution lookup tables for coloring scalar fields, providing visual discrimination even in regions containing small variations in the field. En Vis also enables compositing of other image data such as terrain over masked portions of a model output image. In order to provide interactive frame rates for researchers exploring large global datasets, Hum employs a multithreaded architecture implementing pipelines composed of image loading, decoding, caching and display functionality. Other threads manage user interaction on multiple displays, where interactive pan and zoom features are provided. These allow a researcher to efficiently examine both large-and small-scale features. Hum's implementation of speculative prefetching keeps its imaging pipelines full, caching recently displayed image data for later redisplay, and automating prediction of which frames are likely to be required in the future. Where available, Hum can display stereo pairs of images, and can also overlay vector glyphs at a user-selectable display density. We present the OpenGL Volumizer API for interactive, high-quality, scalable visualization of large volumetric data sets. Volumizer provides a high-level interface to OpenGL hardware to allow application writers and researchers to visualize multiple gigabytes of volumetric data. Use of multiple graphics pipes scales rendering performance and system resources including pixel-fill rate and texture memory size. Volume roaming and multi-resolution volume rendering provide alternatives for interactive visualization of volume data. We combine the concepts of roaming and multi-resolution to introduce 3D Clip-Textures, an efficient technique to visualize arbitrarily large volume data by judiciously organizing and paging them to local graphics resources from storage peripherals. Volumetric shaders provide an interface for high quality volume rendering along with implementing new visualization techniques. This paper gives an overview of the API along with a discussion of large data visualization techniques used by Volumizer.

Simple presentation graphics are intuitive and easy-to-use, but only show highly aggregated data. Bar charts, for example, only show a rather small number of data values and x-y-plots often have a high degree of overlap. Presentation techniques are often chosen depending on the considered data type-bar charts, for example, are used for categorical data and x-y plots are used for numerical data. In this article, we propose a combination of traditional bar charts and x-y-plots, which allows the visualization of large amounts of data with categorical and numerical data. The categorical data dimensions are used for the partitioning into the bars and the numerical data dimensions are used for the ordering arrangement within the bars. The basic idea is to use the pixels within the bars to present the detailed information of the data records. Our so-called pixel bar charts retain the intuitiveness of traditional bar charts while applying the principle of x-y charts within the bars. In many applications, a natural hierarchy is defined on the categorical data dimensions such as time, region, or product type. In hierarchical pixel bar charts, the hierarchy is exploited to split the bars for selected portions of the hierarchy. Our application to a number of real-world e-business and Web services data sets shows the wide applicability and usefulness of our new idea.

This paper describes an implementation of Volume Rendering on a new parallel architectural system, the Hybrid System. The Hybrid System is a combination of SIMD system with an MIMD system. For such an architecture, we have developed a new Volume Rendering algorithm called Slice Orientation. Using this new parallel architecture on the visualization algorithm, we have achieved speed-up rates more than its corresponding MIMD can achieve alone. In this paper, we also present a general formula for determining the Speedup of the Hybrid System so that accurate predictions can be made on the performance of the Hybrid System.

This paper introduces a new Graph visualization technique that can be used to visualize web objects with many associated attributes. We modify the traditional linear model of graphics-driven visualization by defining two mappings between the abstract data and physical pictures, the Geometric Mapping and the Graphical Mapping. We then use this technique to visualize a variety of domain-specific attributes associated with the web objects in a web graph, such as the access frequency and the connectivity of the web page in the web locality. © 2002 ieee.

A hardware-assisted scalable solution for interactive volume rendering of time-varying data

We present a scalable volume rendering technique that exploits lossy compression and low-cost commodity hardware to permit highly interactive exploration of time-varying scalar volume data. A palette-based decoding technique and an adaptive bit allocation scheme are developed to fully utilize the texturing capability of a commodity 3D graphics card. Using a single PC equipped with a modest amount of memory, a texture capable graphics card, and an inexpensive disk array, we are able to render hundreds of time steps of regularly gridded volume data (up to 42 million voxels each time step) at interactive rates. By clustering multiple PCs together, we demonstrate the data-size scalability of our method. The frame rates achieved make possible the interactive exploration of data in the temporal, spatial, and transfer function domains. A comprehensive evaluation of our method based on experimental studies using data sets (up to 134 million voxels per time step) from turbulence flow simulations is also presented.

The scientific simulation and three-dimensional imaging systems in use today are producing large quantities of data that range from gigabytes to petabytes in size. Direct volume rendering, using hardware-based three-dimensional textures, is a common technique for interactively exploring these data sets. The most serious drawback of this approach is the finite amount of available texture memory. In this paper we introduce a hybrid volume rendering technique based on the use of hardware texture mapping and point-based rendering. This approach allows us to leverage the performance of hardware-based volume rendering and the flexibility of a point-based rendering to generate a more efficient representation that makes possible interactive exploration of large-scale data using a single PC. © 2002 ieee.
