To reduce computation in deep neural network inference, a promising approach is to design a network with multiple internal classifiers (ICs) and adaptively select an execution path based on the complexity of a given input. However, quantizing an input-adaptive network, a must-do task for network deployment on edge devices, is a non-trivial task due to jointly allocating its computation budget along with network layers and IC locations. In this paper, we propose Unified Sample-wise Dynamic Network (USDN) with a mixed-precision and early-exit framework that obtains both the optimal location of ICs and layer-wise bit configurations under a given computation budget. The proposed USDN comprises multiple groups of layers, with each group representing a varying degree of complexity for input samples. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach reduces computational cost of the previous work by 12.78% while achieving higher accuracy on ImageNet dataset.

The rapid expansion of autonomous technologies, the rise of computer vision, and edge computing present exciting opportunities in healthcare monitoring systems. Fall prevention is especially important for the elderly because falls from this age group often result in fatalities and serious injuries. Fall detection devices that can quickly recognize falls and alert emergency services have become more and more popular as a result. The primary goal of the project is to increase elderly home safety by implementing an ambient intelligence-based automated emergency recognition system. We present a unique method for fall posture detection utilizing an intelligence surveillance camera and a class of efficient models called MobileNets for mobile and embedded vision applications. A real-time embedded solution persuaded from 'edge AI' is implemented using the state-of-the-art Object detection: single shot detector (SSD) Mobile Net V2 and Internet of things embedded GPU platform NVIDIA's Jetson Nano. © 2025 ieee.

Periodicity and fluctuation are two crucial characteristics of data streams. This paper investigates a novel data stream pattern called periodic spread changer (PSC flow for short), which refers to the heavy change in the spread of a flow occurring with fixed time intervals. Effectively identifying such flows is essential for many real-world applications, such as anomaly detection and network monitoring. To achieve precise real-time detection of these flows under limited memory resources, we propose a novel structure named PSC Sketch. PSC Sketch firstly performs the spread estimation by removing duplicate data items and filters out those non-potential flows with small spreads. During the measurement period, PSC Sketch detects the spread changers, calculates the time intervals between adjacent heavy changes, and reports the top-k periodic spread changers. Extensive experiments based on four real-world datasets demonstrate that, compared to competing algorithms, PSC Sketch achieves an average of 16.80 times lower average absolute error, 44.93% higher accuracy, and 1.83 times higher throughput. © 2024 ieee.

The rapid advancements in vehicular networking technology have enabled onboard users to access a variety of emerging services like precise navigation and real-time hazard avoidance. However, as the diversity and volume of required data expand and demands intensify, most of vehicular services are unable to satisfy user expectations. Although crowdsensing architectures based on edge computing have been proposed in vehicular networks, how to optimally allocate the sensing service time of roadside units and set appropriate prices for services to maximize user benefits still remain significant challenges. To solve the above issue, in this paper, a crowdsensing service pricing method is proposed in vehicular edge computing. Specifically, a vehicular networking crowdsensing framework based on the edge computing is designed. Then, the optimization problem of perception time pricing during the crowdsensing process is modeled into a Stackelberg game and further the multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient-based algorithm is employed to obtain the optimal pricing strategy with user profits maximization. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly increases the payoff for all participants during the crowdsensing process. © 2024 ieee.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has introduced flexibility and efficiency to network management but also faces challenges from flow rule conflicts, including static, dynamic, and dependency conflicts. Existing detection algorithms often focus on a single conflict type, resulting in inefficiencies and high false positive rates. To address these issues, we propose a comprehensive flow rule conflict detection scheme that improves real-time detection of explicit conflicts (both static and dynamic) and reduces false positives in implicit (dependency) conflict detection. Specifically, we present a real-time explicit conflict detection algorithm based on the Protocol-Divided Trie (PDT), which categorizes flow rules by protocol type and uses a prefix tree for rapid matching. Experimental results show that this approach significantly reduces detection times by at least 39.2% and achieves 100% detection accuracy. Additionally, we propose a two-stage detection (TSD) algorithm that combines the precision of path-based detection (PBD) with the efficiency of alias set-based detection (ASD). Our experiments reveal a 51% reduction in false positives compared to ASD and a 48% reduction in detection time compared to PBD, while maintaining equivalent false positive rates. This approach provides a robust solution for conflict detection in SDN, improving network security and resource utilization efficiency. © 2024 ieee.

A digital twin (DT) is a virtual replica of a physical system that allows simulation, optimization, and predictive maintenance. Its challenges include the need for accurate and up-to-date data as well as the complexity of integrating different systems and technologies. This paper explores the potential of combining digital twin and blockchain technologies to create next-generation transportation systems that are more efficient, secure, and sustainable. DTs can be used to simulate and optimize transportation operations and maintenance, while blockchain can enhance security and transparency in data exchange and transaction verification. By integrating these technologies, transportation systems can become more resilient, adaptable, and responsive to changing demands and challenges. This paper provides an overview of the key concepts and applications of DTs and blockchain in transportation, including use cases such as autonomous vehicles, smart logistics, and mobility as a service. It also discusses the technical and organizational challenges of implementing these technologies and suggests potential solutions and research directions. Specifically, this paper argues that DT and blockchain technologies have the potential to transform transportation systems into more efficient, sustainable, and equitable systems that can meet the needs of present and future generations.

This study presents a novel sensor system aimed at preventing child heatstroke in unattended vehicles. The developed system integrates a 24 GHz Continuous Wave (CW) radar, engineered to detect the subtle breathing signals of infants. A custom-designed 4-by-1 patch array antenna, optimized for this specific application, is seamlessly embedded into a designed PCB. To enhance efficiency and accuracy, the system incorporates a low-cost 8-bit Microcontroller (MC) and a dedicated hardware filter. These components facilitate a tailored signal processing algorithm specifically designed for efficient and rapid computation of the child's Respiratory Rate (RR). The system's performance evaluation involved monitoring a sleeping infant's respiratory patterns in real-time. Collected data was then compared against established reference standards to assess the system's accuracy in detecting the child's RR, providing compelling evidence of its efficacy. Furthermore, the system has demonstrated compliance with automotive industry standards, assuring seamless integration into existing vehicle frameworks. This innovation holds significant potential to proactively enhance automotive safety standards.

The paper presents a comparative analysis of popular deep learning-based object detectors, focusing on evaluating their real-time performance on embedded platforms. The objective was to identify the optimal algorithm that can efficiently operate within limited computational resources and memory constraints of embedded systems while minimizing energy consumption. We tested a set of popular detectors, such as Faster R-CNN, YOLO, and SSD MobileNet and evaluated their performance on the testing platform with CUDA cores. A faster variant of bounding box suppression, blazing fast Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS), was employed to enhance efficiency. Additionally, the generalized intersection over union (GIoU) metric was adopted as the optimal testing method, allowing for more accurate object localization and detection. Results demonstrate that the SSD MobileNet-V2 and Tiny YOLO detectors exhibit promising real-time performance on embedded platforms, although their accuracy is diminished compared to larger models. © 2023 ieee.

As urban landscapes increasingly transform into smart cities, there is an increasing emphasis on smart buildings for sustainable and efficient management of resources. This evolution necessitates innovative approaches to efficiently manage energy resources, enhance occupant comfort, and ensure environmental sustainability. In response to these challenges, this study introduces a practical and novel smart building management system, which integrates Digital Twin (DT) technology with machine learning, primarily aimed at enhancing thermal comfort in buildings. The system, underpinned by a sensor network-based DT and real-time data visualization using the Unreal Engine, employs a Deep Neural Network (DNN) to predict thermal comfort. The empirical validation, conducted in a controlled laboratory setting, involves a comparative analysis of the DNN's performance against traditional models and user experience evaluation through the USE Questionnaire. Results demonstrate the DNN's superior predictive accuracy and high user satisfaction levels in usability and effectiveness. This research highlights the significant role of DT and machine learning in revolutionizing smart building operations, setting a foundation for future advancements in creating sustainable, efficient, and occupant-friendly smart cities. © 2024 ieee.

Video Instance Segmentation (VIS) in low light conditions presents a significant challenge when deployed on resource-constrained edge devices, especially in autonomous vehicles, surveillance, robotics, or similar applications. This paper presents OwlsEye, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first hardware implementation for real-time Video Instance Segmentation under low-light settings using an off-the-shelf RGB camera. Implemented on the Intel Nezha embedded platform, OwlsEye demonstrates an improvement in Frames Per Second (FPS) from 0.6 to 28 FPS using model weight quantization, brightness verification, and asynchronous FIFO Pipelining. This paper also presents the EQyTorch framework, an extension of Qtorch+ for fixed-posit numbers, used in weight quantization for the YOLOv8 architecture. We show that fixed-posit quantization achieves an improvement in latency and power utilization of 2.35×, 3.6×, and 9.02×, 87.91× compared to INT8 and FP32 for 65nm CMOS. Furthermore, this paper presents a synthetic DarkCOCO2017 validation dataset to test the OwlsEye segmentation performance in enhanced, original, and dark images. Our work highlights a novel real-time low-light VIS system and the potential of using Fixed-Posit quantization for edge AI applications. © 2025 ieee.
