We propose two complementary methods to account for scheduler overhead in the schedulability analysis of Variable Bandwidth Servers (VBS), which control process execution speed by allocating variable CPU bandwidth to processes. Scheduler overhead in VBS may be accounted for either by decreasing process execution speed to maintain CPU utilization (called response accounting), or by increasing CPU utilization to maintain process execution speed (called utilization accounting). Both methods can be combined by handling an arbitrary fraction of the total scheduler overhead with one method and the rest with the other. Distinguishing scheduler overhead due to releasing and due to suspending processes allows us to further improve our analysis by accounting for releasing overhead in a separate, virtual VBS process. Although our analysis is based on the VBS model, the general idea of response and utilization accounting may also be applied to other, related scheduling methods.

In this paper, we jointly optimize computation and communication task scheduling for streaming applications on MPSoC. The objective is to minimize schedule length by totally removing inter-core communication overhead. By minimizing schedule length, the system performance can be improved by adopting a smaller period or exploring the slacks generated for energy reduction with DVS. To guarantee the schedulability of communication tasks, we perform the schedulability analysis, and theoretically obtain the upper bound of the times needed to reschedule each computation task. Based on the analysis, we formulate the scheduling problem as an ILP (Integer Linear Programming) formulation and obtain an optimal solution. We evaluate our technique with a set of benchmarks from both real-life streaming applications and synthetic task graphs. The simulation results show that our technique can achieve a 27.72% reduction in schedule length and a 13.38% reduction in energy consumption on average compared with the previous work.

The effect of advances in the fields of ubiquitous computing, wireless communications and embedded system design has seen a corresponding rapid improvement of wireless sensor technology. Sensor networks have emerged as a platform for deployment and sustenance of critical applications that require real-time sensing and data acquisition for decision-making purposes. A significant number of malicious attacks against the security of such networks have been identified in recent times. Considering the untrusted environments of operations of such networks, the threat of distributed attacks against constrained sensory resources i.e. sensor power, computation and communication capabilities cannot be overlooked. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy logic-based approach towards achieving demarkation in the values of specific parameters of an attack detection scheme for detecting distributed node-exhaustion attacks in wireless sensor networks. Using the Unified And-Or (UAO) aggregation operator, we model and formulate a mechanism to achieve a tradeoff between frequent attack detection and sensor node energy utilization. Simulation results prove the effectiveness of our approach in addressing the issue of computing the optimal parameter values for achieving a reasonable tradeoff between attack detection rate and sensor node energy utilization rate.

In this paper, the fabrication method and structure of the integral type CsI/MCP X-ray cathode in intensifiers was introduced, the transmission type CsI/MCP X-ray cathode of practical application in intensifier was indicated especially. The response characteristic,the quantum efficiency and noise characteristic of CsI/MCP X-ray cathode in intensifier was given and analysed, respectively. A new Lixiscope of real-time imaging system composed of Lixiscope, the image collection and procession system of CCD) was studied by experimental method. The optimized resolution 6.3lp/mm of imaging was obtained which achieving the anticipated goals to decrease the flashing noise and ensure the brightness of the image. Using this system, the finger and the wrist joint of human body can be diagnosed and detected. The corresponding photographs were given which indicating a potential applications of this new type of low-intensity x-ray real-time imaging system in biomedicine and non-destructive dections. ©2010 ieee.

The laboratory practice of employing atomic force probing (AFP) using AFP current imaging and Nanoprobe Capacitance-Voltage Spectroscopy (NCVS) at contact level (CA) for identfication of front end of line (FEOL) defects in MOSFET devices, especially for silicon on insulator applications has been extensively detailed [1,2,3]. The introduction of Nanoprobe Capacitance Voltage Spectroscopy (NCVS) on bulk silicon wafers and silicon on insulator (SOI) wafers to characterize discrete MOSFET and SOI embedded dynamic ramdom access memory devices (eDRAM) without the time consuming delayering methods of conventional scanning capacitance microscopy have also been highlighted [1,2,3,4,5,6]. Typically, this laboratory AFP characterization is employed on die fragments sampled from whole wafers following back end of the line (BEOL) metallization processing and test. The process vintage of this hardware can be as much as three months after the critical FEOL processing has occurred. This paper is intended to describe for the first time the methodology of applying AFP on whole 300mm wafers at post CA chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) process level to provide a real time insight into yield issues that would not be detected until subsequent BEOL metallization processing and testing. This new AFP tool would incorporate enhanced features enabling both DC measurements as well as AC capacitance voltage measurements of discrete deep trench embedded DRAM (eDRAM) devices for 32nm, 28nm and 20nm node technologies. © 2010 ieee.

Flash memory is continuously been dominating on HDD for performance oriented modern applications by last more than two decades. Currently the high capacity MLC flash SSDs are becoming center of attraction for large size multimedia systems to support their increasing storage and throughput demands. The advantage of MLC flash over SLC flash is lower cost, higher capacity and increased throughput. However, MLC flash SSDs suffer for lesser data reliability, higher bit error ratio and reduced erasure cycles compare to SLC flash SSDs. In this paper, the performance is evaluated and compared of both types of NAND flash memories with HDD. Experimental results based on two modern real-time benchmarks are provided and discussed to give the better idea to users for suitable storage devices for their embedded and multimedia applications. © 2010 ieee.

Location privacy is a main concern in vehicular communications where vehicles have to broadcast traffic routine information frequently. A promising approach to prevent a vehicle from been tracked suggests vehicle to change pseudonyms in regions called mix-zones, where the adversary cannot eavesdrop the vehicular communication. However, the deployment problem of mix-zones has not been well addressed in previously reported works. In this paper, we propose a statistics-based metric for evaluating and locating a mix-zone. Furthermore, a cost-efficient mix-zones deployment scheme is presented to guarantee that vehicles at any place can pass through an effective mix-zone in certain driving time (DT), and the extra overhead time (ET) of adjusting routes to across the mix-zone is small. Finally, several deployment examples are given for a real-world map. © 2010 ieee.

Anesthesiologists rely on his or her hand-feeling and experience to insertthe epidural needle into the epidural space when conducting epidural *** no direct guiding and reporting on the distance between the epiduralneedle and the epidural space, this practice is fully depending onanesthesiologist's experience. Hence, it is a challenge for the less experiencedanesthesiologist to properly insert the epidural needle into the epiduralspace. In this study, we have developed a high frequency needle ultrasoundtransducer to assist the epidural space access. By inserting the high frequencyneedle ultrasound transducer into the hollow chamber of the epidural needle, thedistance between the tip of the epidural needle, ligament flavum, and duramater can be measured in real time by monitoring the reflected ultrasound signalin A-mode display. We have successfully applied the needle ultrasoundtransducer to assist in vivo epidural space insertion in a porcine model. ©2010 ieee.

Modern computing systems have adopted multicore architectures and multiprocessor systems on chip (MPSoCs) for accommodating the increasing demand on computation power. However, performance boosting is constrained by shared resources, such as buses, main memory, DMA, *** paper analyzes the worst-case completion (response) time for real-time tasks when time division multiple access (TDMA) policies are applied for resource ***-time tasks execute periodically on a processing element and are constituted by sequential superblocks. A superblock is characterized by its accesses to a shared resource and its computation time. We explore three models of accessing shared resources: (1)dedicated access model, in which accesses happen only at the beginning and the end of a superblock, (2) general access model, in which accesses could happen anytime during the execution of a superblock, and (3) hybrid access model, which combines the dedicated and general access models. We present a framework to analyze the worst-case completion time of real-time tasks (superblocks) under these three access models, for a given TDMA arbiter. We compare the timing analysis of the three proposed models for a real-world application.

This paper presents a novel neuromorphic camera system rotating at high-speed (1 to 4 rotations/sec) to acquire 360° panoramas in real-time by exploiting the high temporal resolution, the high dynamic range and the sparse visual information representation using a neuromorphic vision sensor with address-event (AE) signaling mounted on a high-speed mechanical rotation device. Contrary to state-of-the-art panorama cameras (e.g. rotational cameras or catadioptric cameras), this camera system can delivers several distortion-free 360° panoramas per second at constant image resolution and efficient edge extraction of the scene under real illumination conditions without any further computation. This camera system could establish new sensing capabilities in challenging applications such as real-time environmental awareness for robotics and surveillance. After introducing panorama systems and the neuromorphic dual-line dynamic vision sensor, the new camera concept is presented. A comparative analysis of this system with state-of-the art cameras is given. The concept, the camera design and resulting images using an existing 256 pixel line sensor are presented.
