This paper presents a new approach for wide area dynamic monitoring of the system with many possible applications. One such application is discussed to provide real time stability controls. The new approach utilizes a substation based dynamic state estimation. The substation based dynamic state estimation uses data from relays, PMUs, meters, FDRs etc in the substation only thus avoiding all issues associated with transmission of data and associated time latencies. The substation based dynamic state estimator provides accurate representation of the dynamic state of the system. The dynamic state estimator runs at rates comparable to the suggested rates in the synchrophasors standard C37.118. Presently it has been implemented to execute 10 times per second thus providing the dynamic state of the substation 10 times per second. The results of the substation based dynamic state estimator are transmitted to a central location for monitoring the dynamic state of the system. A major advantage is the fact that only the dynamic state of the substation is transmitted instead of the raw PMU data that typical wide area monitoring implementations use. Note that the data describing the dynamic state is much less that the raw data of the PMUs. This fact facilitates the speedier transmission of the data in addition to the advantage of a more accurate dynamic state as opposed to the raw data. This infrastructure can be used for a number of applications. The paper focuses on transient stability monitoring, identification of out of step conditions and control. We propose an approach that is based on accurate evaluation of the system energy function (Lyapunov indirect method) and extraction of stability properties from the energy function. Specifically, we provide a methodology for determining the required data accuracy for the reliable real time estimation of the energy function. Audio and video applications over wireless sensor networks have recently emerged as a promising research field. However, the limits in terms of communication bandwidth and transmission power have withstood the design of low-power embedded nodes for voice communication. In this work we describe the implementation details of an embedded system for the wireless broadcasting of audio signals over the low datarate ieee 802.15.4 standard, which is widely adopted to build Wireless Personal and Sensor Networks. The resulting device has been developed from scratch by combining several techniques with the goal of obtaining the most suitable implementation on a low-cost and low-power 16-bit microcontroller. We used a realtime operating system, a well-known psychoacoustic model based on FFT signal decomposition and the Haar wavelet transform to create a novel audio compression algorithm targeted to embedded systems with limited computational capabilities. The result is a fully-functional embedded system which is able to stream voice in real-time over ieee 802.15.4 with an acceptable audio quality.

In telepresence and telemanipulation systems, multimodal data is exchanged over a network allowing humans to experience and to operate in remote or inaccessible environments. To operate over the global Internet and connect to multiple telepresence systems, a flexible framework for initiating, handling and terminating Internetbased telerobotic sessions becomes necessary. In this work, we explore the use of standard Internet session and transport protocols in the context of telerobotic applications. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is widely used to handle multimedia teleconference sessions with audio, video or text, and provides many services advantageous for establishing connections between heterogeneous haptic interfaces and telerobotic systems. We apply the session paradigm to the creation and negotiation of haptic telepresence sessions and propose to extend this framework to work with the haptic modality. The notion of a "haptic codec" is introduced for transforming haptic data into a common format, applying data reduction or compression techniques and implementing teleoperation control architectures. The use of the real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) is explored for transport of teleoperation data. Finally, a prototype and demonstrator system is presented for evaluation of the proposed framework. ©2010 ieee.

The potential impact of optical fiber sensors embedded into medical textiles for the continuous monitoring of the patients is presented. We report on a novel non-intrusive optical sensing technology designed to measure the elongation due to abdominal and thoracic motions during breathing. The developed sensor can successfully sense textile elongation between 0.1 % and 5 %, while maintaining the stretching properties of the textile substrates for a good comfort of the patient. The solution prototyped shows a high stability and good reproducibility allowing consideration of a mobile or static application with an easier integration in all kinds of garment by stitching the sensor to the garment. The sensor is coupled to a compact, real time and accurate monitoring system which could be interfaced to a conventional monitor for medical application or to a wireless system for all mobile and ambulatory applications. © 2010 ieee.

real-time activity recognition using body sensor networks is an important and challenging task and it has many potential applications. In this paper, we propose a real time, hierarchical model to recognize both simple gestures and complex activities using a wireless body sensor network. In this model, we first use a fast, lightweight template matching algorithm to detect gestures at the sensor node level, and then use a discriminative pattern based real-time algorithm to recognize high-level activities at the portable device level. We evaluate our algorithms over a real-world dataset. The results show that the proposed system not only achieves good performance (an average precision of 94.9%, an average recall of 82.5%, and an average real-time delay of 5.7 seconds), but also significantly reduces the network communication cost by 60.2%.

This paper presents a system-on-chip passive RFID tag with an embedded temperature sensor for the EPC Gen-2 protocol in the 900-MHz UHF frequency band. A dual-path clock generator is proposed to support both applications with either very accurate link frequency or very low power consumption. On-chip temperature sensing is accomplished with a time-readout scheme to reduce the power consumption. Moreover, a gain-compensation technique is proposed to reduce the temperature sensing error due to process variations by using the same bandgap reference of the tag to generate bias currents for both the current-to-digital converter and the clock generator of the sensor. Also integrated is a 128-bit one-time-programmable (OTP) memory array based on gate-oxide antifuse without extra mask steps. Fabricated in a standard 0.18- μm CMOS process with analog options, the 1.1-mm2 tag chip is bonded onto an antenna using flip-chip technology to realize a complete tag inlay, which is successfully demonstrated and evaluated in real-time wireless communications with commercial RFID readers. The tag inlay achieves a sensitivity of -6 dBm and a sensing inaccuracy of ±0.8° C (σ inaccuracy) over operating temperature range from -20°C to 30°C with one-point calibration. © 2010 ieee.

In this paper, we present a vision-based vehicle detection method for collision warning of driver assistance system on highway in the nighttime. The major function of our work is to find preceding vehicles in the dynamic background. The system captures the image of road environment by a camera mounted on the windshield of the test car and uses multi-level image processing algorithms to extract taillights of preceding vehicles and identify the proceeding vehicles by taillight clustering processing. At the same time, it estimates the related distance between the test car and the preceding vehicle for collision warning. In our experiments, the system is implemented on an embedded system with Linux operation system, open source codes and limited hardware resources. With the results of our experiments, it shows that the system can correctly verify the proceeding vehicles in the nighttime under the real-time requirement. © 2010 ieee.

Data currently published in the literature provides estimates of photovoltaic (PV) module performance under essentially two standard test conditions. However, real design optimization by electrical and PV engineers working to achieve maximum production for systems they are responsible for requires additional knowledge as to how these modules can be expected to perform under all expected field conditions and in the presence of real obstructions;often including necessary inter-row shading. This work provides, for the first time, detailed field calculations of module performance for two types of PV modules illustrating the detrimental production impact of inter-row shading. The research indicates that using photodiode sensors to provide critical solar data from dispersed locations on the modules could aid in the development of an optimization procedure for minimizing the negative aspects of this common phenomenon. Extension of this work to cover the majority of the many module types will enable engineers to adequately address inter-row shading when they attempt to maximize the size of a PV system for a given roof or ground mounted project. It is clear from these research results that the impacts of inter-row shading on module output and energy production performance are more significant than originally anticipated by current PV design software models and must be considered in future design programs. The research provides a PV module shading test protocol, proposed sensor array layout design and results of the analysis of inter-row module shading (up to one cell row) and cell row coverage (20% through 100% in 20% increments) showing how important and worthwhile this sensor system can be to forwarding the design efforts of engineers working with high voltage photovoltaic power modules. © 2009 ieee.

This paper presents about the design and fabrication of a cost effective and portable system for real time monitoring and data analysis of cell cultivation applications based on CMOS sensor and microfluidic technology. The digital CMOS sensor has 2-Mpixel resolution and output digital data that is designed and fabricated on the 0.18um CMOS image process. The Chip has integrated with low noise 2 shared 2.25T pinned photodiode active pixel, noise reduction circuit, analog to digital converter and timing control circuits. The module based on the 2-Mpixel CMOS sensor has two focuses that can capture the image of the business card so that the monitoring system is so compact and low power. In this paper, one microfluidic product has been fabricated based on the MEMS process that applies for cell cultivation. The online monitoring and analytical system uses CMOS image sensor to capture the image of the microfluidic applications and a field programmable gate array (FPGA) chip to process the captured image. The final image can be displayed in the monitor or be sent to computer to be stored. This technique can be utilized in monitoring the cell size lying on the pixel size of CMOS sensor. In this paper, the monitoring cell size is large than 2.8um for the pixel size of CMOS sensor is 2.8um. The advantages of this system not only provide miniaturization and minimum cost, but also offer many advantages over conventional laboratory experiments, such as low energy LED light, parallel and fast microfluidic chip, high resolution CMOS sensor, fast and accurate test, low cost and consumption, etc. ©2010 ieee.
