Dependable communications is becoming a critical factor due to the pervasive usage of networked embedded systems that increasingly interact with human lives in one way or the other in many real-time applications. Though many smaller systems are providing dependable services employing uniprocesssor solutions, stringent fault containment strategies etc., these practices are fast becoming inadequate due to the prominence of COTS in hardware and component based development (CBD) in software as well as the increased focus on building 'system of systems'. Hence the repertoire of design paradigms, methods and tools available to the developers of distributed real-time systems needs to be enhanced in multiple directions and dimensions. In future scenarios, potentially a network needs to cater to messages of multiple criticality levels (and hence varied redundancy requirements) and scheduling them in a fault-tolerant manner becomes an important research issue. We address this problem in the context of Controller Area Network (CAN), which is widely used in automotive and automation domains, and describe a methodology which enables the provision of appropriate scheduling guarantees. The proposed approach involves definition of fault-tolerant windows of execution for critical messages and the derivation of message priorities based on earliest deadline first (EDF).

Currently, Java has been gradually applied in embedded real-time area with the improvement by the real-time Specification for Java (RTSJ). Accordingly, a hardware Java execution engine for embedded real-time applications, JPOR-32 (32-bit Java Processor Optimized for RTSJ), is designed. Taking JPOR-32 for an example, this paper presents the garbage collection mechanism for RTSJ-oriented embedded processor in detail. JPOR-32 provides effective architectural support for garbage collection. And the object reference format of JPOR-32 provides supports for objects tracing and heap scanning. The support for write barrier of real-time concurrent GC is also performed. Moreover, JPOR-32 provides optimized instruction level support for garbage collection. In addition, different garbage collection algorithms are compared on the base of the resource-constrained feature and the real-time requirement of the processor, and the hybrid garbage collectors are suggested.

The increase in proliferation of mobile devices and wireless technologies in recent years has opened up new challenges in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET). This growth has also led to an increase in demand of applications such as streaming video, multi-player interactive games and financial services such as real-time stock quotes. Such applications impose a strict guarantee on quality of service (QoS), namely on end-to-end delay, bandwidth consumption and cost. But finding a path that satisfies multiple constraints is inherently hard. Further challenges occur with routing in a mobile environment where nodes are mobile, the data delivery path constantly changes and routing is constrained by battery levels. Multicast routing can improve network usage by sharing resources when sending messages to multiple destinations especially when multiple mobile nodes are located within transmission range of a node. We propose a multicast routing technique based on multiobjective genetic algorithm (MOGA) that optimizes multiple QoS parameters in MANET to find an optimal multicast tree. Simulation studies show that the GA is robust and scales well for a relatively large number of nodes. © 2010 ieee.

As Air Traffic Control Systems move from a voice only environment to one in which clearances are issued via data link, there is a risk that an unauthorized entity may attempt to masquerade as either the pilot or controller. In order to protect against this and related attacks, air-ground communications must be secured. The challenge is to add security in an environment in which bandwidth is limited. The Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN) is an enabling digital network communications technology that addresses capacity and efficiency issues associated with current aeronautical voice communication systems. Equally important, the ATN facilitates migration to free flight, where direct computer-to-computer communication will automate air traffic management, minimize controller and pilot workload, and improve overall aircraft routing efficiency. Protecting ATN communications is critical since safety-of-flight is seriously affected if an unauthorized entity, a hacker for example, is able to penetrate an otherwise reliable communications system and accidentally or maliciously introduce erroneous information that jeopardizes the overall safety and integrity of a given airspace. However, an ATN security implementation must address the challenges associated with aircraft mobility, limited bandwidth communication channels, and uninterrupted operation across organizational and geopolitical boundaries. This paper provides a brief overview of the ATN, the ATN security concept, and begins a basic introduction to the relevant security concepts of security threats, security services and security mechanisms. Security mechanisms are further examined by presenting the fundamental building blocks of symmetric encipherment, asymmetric encipherment, and hash functions. In the recent applications of virtual reality and augmented reality, panoramic-image-based representation of real world environments has received much attention for its advantages over the traditional 3D modeling approaches, such as shorter generation times, faster rendering speeds, higher photorealism, and less storage needed. The drawback is however that it stores only static information of the scene. Panoramic video has been proposed to preserve wide field-of-view dynamic characteristics of the natural environment, which is especially suitable for outdoor sceneries. Its limitation is lack of control of such video. In this paper, a newly developed software program is presented, which takes a single video sequence from a panning camera, and generates a cylindrical panorama embedded with video textures, called animated panorama. The program has the following functions: seamless video textures generation, undesired object removal by video inpainting, and animated panorama player. We claim that the quality of the animated panorama produced by our program is satisfactory to virtual reality applications and the computation time is acceptable for practical use. © 2010 ieee.

The laboratory practice of employing atomic force probing (AFP) using AFP current imaging and Nanoprobe Capacitance-Voltage Spectroscopy (NCVS) at contact level (CA) for identfication of front end of line (FEOL) defects in MOSFET devices, especially for silicon on insulator applications has been extensively detailed [1,2,3]. The introduction of Nanoprobe Capacitance Voltage Spectroscopy (NCVS) on bulk silicon wafers and silicon on insulator (SOI) wafers to characterize discrete MOSFET and SOI embedded dynamic ramdom access memory devices (eDRAM) without the time consuming delayering methods of conventional scanning capacitance microscopy has also been highlighted [1,2,3,4,5,6]. Typically, this laboratory AFP characterization is employed on die fragments sampled from whole wafers following back end of the line (BEOL) metallization processing and test. The process vintage of this hardware can be as much as three months after the critical FEOL processing has occurred. This paper is intended to describe for the first time the methodology of applying AFP on whole 300mm wafers at the post CA chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) process level to provide a real time insight into yield issues that would not be detected until subsequent BEOL metallization processing and testing. This new AFP tool incorporates enhanced features enabling both DC measurements as well as AC capacitance voltage measurements of discrete deep trench embedded DRAM (eDRAM) devices for 32nm, 28nm, and 20nm node technologies. This paper addresses the problem of assigning tasks to embedded control units. The units are considered to be connected via a bus, and tasks may already be deployed onto the units. To save costs, the objective is to insert as many new tasks onto the system as possible. In this setting, to support early design decisions, we present an approximative and fast pre-analysis of the system. We introduce spare-time analysis and the analysis of maximal allowed worst-case execution time to simplify the problem and to achieve a fast solving algorithm, which we implement as mixed-integer linear problem. We conduct experiments to investigate the scalability of the approach with the result that for input sizes of up to 160 tasks with up to 50% not-yet-deployed tasks a solution is found in many cases within reasonable time, our machine needs in the average case 150s. With a reference example, taken from literature, we compare our approach with a similar method and show that our approach is faster.

This paper describes hybrid fusion module used in a strong localization context (POMA) for embedded vehicle applications. This work has been developed in order to give an answer to the POMA (Positioning, Maps and local referencing) sub project objectives. These objectives are to provide, for a set of high level applications, a positioning service included a service quality, a metric accuracy (lane) and a robust result. This work is involved in CVIS European project. The use of IMM approach in the Hybrid Fusion module will be justified in comparison to the different current probabilistic methods. The IMM, contrary to the non modular methods, is based on the discretization of the vehicle evolution space into simple maneuvers, represented each by a simple dynamic model such as constant velocity or constant turning etc. This allows the method to be optimized for highly dynamic vehicles. The application of this positioning service will be presented in a real time embedded architecture. The presented results are based on real measurements collected from representatives scenarios (test track, peri-urban road, highway). These results show a real interest in using the new IMM method in order to reach the POMA's objectives.

Massively Distributed embedded Systems (MDES) such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are gaining increasing attention, since they enable a broad range of novel applications starting from monitoring oceans to exploring distant planets. WSNs consist of hundreds of nodes that have typically very limited recourses (computational, memory, energy, etc.) and are deployed in a dynamic environment, where they have to continuously adapt to new conditions. Due to the small-size requirement of the nodes, they are highly resource-constrained. Because of that, the amount of functionality that may be present in each node is limited. Therefore, cooperation between nodes is needed in order to accomplish complex tasks. These facts turn the design of applications for WSNs into a challenge. A promising approach how to deal with it is to use the emergent self-organization metaphor. In this paper a new process algebra (PA) called "Locality-aware extension of π-Calculus" is presented. The algebra is one of several techniques included in a new design methodology for the design of self-organizing behavior in MDES. The method is based on π-Calculus and allows a highlevel description of interactions among processes. As the most important characteristic of self-organization is the restriction of interactions to neighboring elements (localized interactions), we extend the π-Calculus with locality awareness, a necessary abstraction to allow the modeling of self-organization in MDES. To get full locality awareness in π-Calculus, we extended it with concepts for modeling spatiality, probability and time. Moreover, new types of channels are included to cover various types of communication such as distribution, broadcast and aggregation. In order to validate this new PA, we successfully model a self-organizing clustering algorithm for WSNs.
