This paper presents a lightweight image fusion algorithm specifically designed for merging visible light and infrared images, with an emphasis on balancing performance and efficiency. The proposed method enhances the generator in a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) by integrating the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) to improve feature focus and utilizing Depthwise Separable Convolution (DSConv) for more efficient computations. These innovations significantly reduce the model's computational cost, including the number of parameters and inference latency, while maintaining or even enhancing the quality of the fused images. Comparative experiments using the M3FD dataset demonstrate that the proposed algorithm not only outperforms similar image fusion methods in terms of fusion quality but also offers a more resource-efficient solution suitable for deployment on embedded devices. The effectiveness of the lightweight design is validated through extensive ablation studies, confirming its potential for real-time applications in complex environments. © 2024 ieee.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are used in different fields ranging from recreational vehicles to agriculture, environmental monitoring, infrastructure inspection, disaster management, security, surveillance and logistics. This paper provides an overview of UAV applications and highlights the importance of object detection in improving drone autonomy. Object detection facilitates tasks such as precision agriculture, disaster response, environmental protection, infrastructure inspection and autonomous navigation. The paper reviews recent advances in UAV-specific object detection algorithms and methodologies and highlights challenges such as varying altitudes, motion blur, real-time processing constraints and limited computational resources. Solutions and adaptations are discussed to overcome these challenges, including lightweight neural network architectures, transfer learning, data augmentation, edge computing, multi-sensor fusion, attention mechanisms and adaptive algorithms. The study highlights the importance of integrating object detection systems into UAVs to improve their use in various sectors and contribute to improvements in surveillance missions. © 2024 ieee.

In the field of embedded systems, containers are often understood as an additional burden and would also affect their reactivity. With respect to this assumption, we provide measurement results that strongly support the use of containers for real-time applications. This work examines the use of docker containers in systems, that must work under hard deadlines, in terms of their reactivity related to timer events and external signals. For this purpose, measurements for time-critical handling of interrupts and events are performed directly on an embedded platform, which made it necessary to develop a corresponding novel measuring method. Finally, we were able to determine that the same requirements for the reactivity of an embedded system could be met in a docker container if they could also be ensured for applications native on the host system.

Visual perception networks are often used to provide the necessary environmental information such as semantics and depth for mobile robots or autonomous driving. However, these networks can usually only complete one task. In practical applications, people often hope that an visual perception network can complete multiple tasks at the same time. In this work, We propose a lightweight visual perception network called LSEPNet with two branches of semantic segmentation and disparity estimation based on binocular vision system, which is composed of lightweight feature extraction module, feature fusion module based on attention mechanism, semantic decoder and disparity refinement module. Through feature fusion and joint loss function, LSEPNet can jointly train disparity estimation and semantic segmentation tasks end-to-end in real time. We evaluate the proposed network LSEPNet on KITTI2015 and Cityscapes datasets, and compare it with classic disparity estimation network and semantic segmentation network respectively, proving that LSEPNet can complete semantic segmentation task and disparity estimation task together in real-time with acceptable speed and accuracy. © 2023 ieee.

Nowadays, technology in agriculture allows the construction of intelligent greenhouses through control of the climatic variables to improve the quantity and quality of products. This work presents the implementation of a system for monitoring and predicting temperature and humidity to maintain an appropriate microclimate for cultures in an experimental greenhouse in the Tunshi station of the Escuela Politécnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH), Ecuador. The electronic system comprises 4 sensors, an embedded board, IoT tech to store data in a local web server, a mobile app to enable remote access to evaluate in real-time, and a Machine Learning algorithm to predict these variables for decision-making to robust control of the microclimate. The control system switches on 2 single-phase squirrel cage motors to raise or lower the side curtains according to the climate variables of a specific crop. Results show 100% the integrity of information for wireless communication. The absolute error for temperature and humidity measured is 1.17%, and 1.56% between sensors and pattern equipment. The mean time spent raising and lowering the curtains is 20 seconds. The LSTM and CNN algorithms show R2 greater than 80%, and MSE is less than 2.0e-3 to train and test processes. This yields promising results to be accessible for students and local farmers due to the economic comparison and this system could be implemented for large-scale applications. © 2024 ieee.

Gesture and motion recognition based on surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals brings intelligent and natural interaction experience for human-machine interaction (HMI). Deep learning (DL) based recognition methods are currently widely used. However, performing deep learning in real-time on resource-constrained edge portable devices is still in its infancy. Therefore, there is a great demand for efficient, accurate, cost-effective solutions for edge devices. To address this challenge, we built a low-power and wearable HMI system with edge AI. Specifically, we proposed a multi-channel sEMG signal-based gesture and action recognition algorithm, developed a portable 8-channel sEMG acquisition circuit, and designed a dedicated algorithm acceleration processor to implement the proposed algorithm. The data of 10 categories in 6 healthy subjects were tested with an average recognition accuracy of 95.73%. In addition, we built a robotic arm online test system for testing, and the experimental results showed an average success rate of 92.5%, a single-frame signal processing and recognition time of 44.36 s, and an overall system power consumption of 0.493W. This system meets the needs of real-time applications and can be integrated or extended to other application scenarios. © 2023 ieee.

Different from the recent popular super resolution system based on AI technology which needs normally massive training datasets, the micro-scanning super resolution system by integrating the high-precision mechanism and the image processing system can overpass the training datasets limit to enhance the image resolution and quality considerably in real time. Such a real-time image super resolution system named Quick Demo Station (QDS) system is presented. This system is jointly developed by Shanghai IAE, China, in cooperation with Cedrat technologies, France. The system is made of two modules, one imaging module (MicroScan_VIS_Module), the other image processing module (a portable image processing workstation). The image processing module performs imaging module’s control, as well as image acquisition, image registration, image super-resolution reconstruction, image contrast enhancement. Here the algorithm used to restore the low-resolution (LR) images is the iterative reconstruction method, which could achieve high quality super-resolution (SR) results. The output is a video stream whose frame rate is higher than 25 frames per second. The system is being tested in different applications and show the excellent super-resolution results, including low light level conditions and outdoor variable lighting scenarios. Furthermore, the algorithm in image processing module can be used not only on the workstations, but also in embedded processing system. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Containers have revolutionized application deployment and life-cycle management in current cloud platforms. applications have evolved from large monoliths to complex graphs of loosely-coupled microservices aiming to improve deployment flexibility and operational efficiency. However, modern microservice-based architectures are challenging since proper allocation and scaling of microservices is a difficult task due to their complex inter-dependencies. Existing works do not consider microservice dependencies, which could lead to the application's performance degradation when service demand increases. This paper studies the impact of microservice interdependencies in auto-scaling mechanisms by proposing a novel framework named gym-hpa that enables different auto-scaling goals via Reinforcement Learning (RL). The framework has been developed based on the OpenAI Gym library for the popular Kubernetes (K8s) platform to bridge the gap between RL and auto-scaling research by training RL agents on real cloud environments. The aim is to improve resource usage and reduce the application's response time in future cloud platforms by considering microservice inter-dependencies in horizontal scaling. Experiments with microservice benchmark applications show that RL agents trained with the gym-hpa framework can reduce on average resource usage by 30% and reduce the application's response time by 25% compared to default scaling mechanisms. © 2023 ieee.

Intrinsic decomposition is an inherent issue in computer vision and graphics, which usually decomposes the image into reflectance and shading. Reflectance and shading can be applied to achieve virtual and real information fusion with illumination consistency in augmented reality, but this demands higher performance and speed of the intrinsic decomposition method. In this study, we propose a novel neural network architecture for intrinsic decomposition that enables real-time generation of high-quality reflectance and shading. Furthermore, we extend our framework by integrating the hands segmentation network, resulting in an augmented reality framework capable of seamlessly fusing virtual materials and hands. Through comprehensive experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework in achieving realistic fusion of multiple virtual materials and hands, even in the presence of dynamic gestures and diverse illumination conditions. We believe that our study will serve as an inspiration for the development of more creative applications in fields such as art, film, and advertising. © 2023 ieee.
