In the era of ubiquitous Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) systems have emerged as pivotal in advancing societal progress. Yet, their complexity often requires the expertise of professionals, presenting an entry barrier for less-experienced computing practitioners. In the realm of human-Centered AI (HCAI), ongoing research is developing new approaches to engage users via intuitive interfaces in the design of ML-based systems. For example, visual Programming languages (VPLs) and no-code platforms offer user-friendly experiences by avoiding complex computational operations. However, literature on VPL-based tools for novices reveals a gap: many tools offer limited interpretability approaches or are overly complex for easy customization. To address this gap, we developed the PyFlowML prototype, an open-source, flow-based programming tool with a focus on Explainable AI (XAI). This study aims to set a benchmark in the field by comparing PyFlowML with KNIME, a similar tool known for its usability among domain specialists. Our results show that domain specialists perceive flow-based language tools as valuable. This study highlights the potential of VPL-based tools to make the design of trustworthy ML-based systems more inclusive, thereby contributing to the advancement of AI democratization.

Programming robots has long been an expensive and time-consuming task with a high barrier to entry for non-experts. The emergence of end-user development approaches for robotics has allowed to lower this barrier. Existing approaches, however, still lack proper software engineering techniques to allow the programming of fully functional robot behaviours and facilitate further maintenance and reuse of the programs developed by end users. In this work, we introduce a low-code approach for allowing physical trainers to program robot-assisted physical training activities without the assistance of a robotics engineer. The approach relies on a textual domain-specific language (DSL) to allow end users to specify the expected robot behaviour through Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD) scenarios.

In pursuit of making the benefits of learning to code more accessible to young learners, numerous block-based environments have been developed. This study attempts to identify key design features within these applications that support student learning;aiming to enhance existing environments, guide future design efforts, and assist educators in selecting platforms tailored to specific educational needs. Through in-depth computer science K-8 teacher interviews and a thematic analysis, we uncovered 96 key concepts, categorized into three themes: design features, user aptitude, and pedagogical strategies. Teachers emphasized usability heuristics such as user control, flexible modalities, clear visual cues, and context-rich error notifications to enhance programming environments. They also stated coding applications need to support pedagogical strategies including pair programming, clear rubrics, appropriate scaffolding, and differentiated instruction.

SQL is a typical query language for performing data analytics. Although its usage is ubiquitous, learners experience that query formulation in SQL is error-prone and time-consuming. Prior research has shown that this is due to low expressive ease, extensive training requirements and high cognitive load, all of which present a significant burden for SQL learners. visual representations can assist learners to significantly lower this burden. The current dominant paradigm aims to facilitate SQL querying by helping users to avoid the syntax of SQL. Such visual Querying Systems (VQS), however, are not effective for SQL learners as they hide the syntax of the language during query formulation, rather than assisting learners to write correct queries in SQL. Furthermore, training with VQSs is system specific, which leads to system dependency for learners. We argue that novices need support from visual Query Representation (VQR) solutions which, instead, help them in learning how to write correct and portable SQL queries. In this paper we present SQLVis, a VQR to support novice SQL users in query writing. Our system represents the query as written in SQL by the user, which can improve the SQL writing proficiency of its users. Results of an in depth empirical study demonstrate the significant value of SQLVis for learners.

New technologies are entering medical practice at an astounding pace. However, these technologies often cause to doctors learn and use difficulties. Then, doctors require assistance of a biomedical engineer. This is currently happening in a local hospital that has new technology to analyze biomechanical protocols in patients. Protocols are used to measure performances and identify changes in human body movements and muscles. Doctors are neither familiar with the concepts nor tools used, so biomedical engineers carry out descriptions of protocols rather than doctors. In this paper, we present the design of a domain-specific language that enables doctors to specify biomechanical protocols by addressing learning barriers (using design patterns). We also make doctors' descriptions compatible with the existing tools, and we also support legacy biomedical descriptions (combining meta-modeling and model transformations).

Microsoft TouchDevelop is a programming environment enabling users use their phones to create scripts that run on the mobile phones. This is achieved via a semi-structured editor and a programming language with several distinctive features, such as support for using smartphone hardware. In order to uncover opportunities for future tool development aimed at facilitating end-user programming of phones on phones, we have investigated the kinds of scripts that people are creating with the current tool set as well as what problems they ask for help with solving. This paper is the first to study how end-user programmers "in the wild" are programming mobile phones. In particular, no previous study has investigated the ways in which end users programmatically use mobile phones' special hardware (e.g., GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope) for practical everyday purposes. We discovered that, in essence, people are using TouchDevelop to create apps: downloadable applications with small, fairly reliable feature sets that take advantage of mobile hardware. In addition, we identified several areas for further innovation aimed at enhancing the programming tool and the online repository where users share scripts with one another.

Programming often involves reverting source code to an earlier state, which we call backtracking. We performed a longitudinal study of programmers' backtracking, analyzing 1,460 hours of fine-grained code editing logs collected from 21 people. Our analysis method keeps track of the change history of each abstract syntax tree node and looks for backtracking instances within each node. Using this method, we detected a total of 15,095 backtracking instances, which gives an average backtracking rate of 10.3/hour. The size of backtracking varied considerably, ranging from a single character to thousands of characters. 34% of the backtracking was performed by manually deleting or typing the desired code, and 9.5% of all backtracking was selective, meaning that it could not have been performed using the conventional undo command present in the IDE. The study results show that programmers need better backtracking tools, and also provide design implications for such tools.

Most prior research into adaptable and adaptive user interfaces primarily focuses on facilitating consistent user experiences across devices and pays less attention to facilitating universal access for diverse end users. We address this shortcoming by developing adaptable user interface components for a category of diverse users, the vision impaired. This paper presents a framework that supports run time adaptation of web components to suit vision impaired users by using a set of adaptable, reusable widgets. We developed a prototype using these components and evaluated its effectiveness. Our results show that an such an adaptable user interface provides significant benefit in many key W3C accessibility areas, helping to make the web more accessible for diverse end users.

In this paper we propose a visual language CFSL for specifying control flow semantics of programming languages. We also present a translation from CFSL to graph production systems (GPS) for flow graph construction: that is any CFSL specification, say for a language L, gives rise to a GPS that constructs from any L-program (represented as an abstract syntax graph) the corresponding flow graph. The specification language is rich enough to capture complex language constructs, including all of Java.

Survey research, while common, has known challenges and limitations. In this paper, we discuss the challenges and concerns of conducting research using online survey in the age of widespread development and use of generative AI technologies. We base our discussion on our recent experiences conducting survey research to better understand software practitioners' knowledge of and experience with automated program repair (APR). In our efforts, we encountered both anticipated and unexpected challenges, much of which stemmed from advancements in AI-assisted automation (e.g., generative AI). For example, we found that many of the open ended responses provided were likely generated by AI. Based on our experiences, we outline how we mitigated or handled these challenges and discuss opportunities for improving survey design and administration to ensure high quality research and outcomes in the age of advanced and widely available AI technologies.
