Diagrammatic modes of communication have long been recognized for their accessible representations of information. One area in which they have been developed is that of logical reasoning, where symbolic notations are perceived by many as difficult to use. Significant progress has been made on formalizing diagrammatic logics and proving formal properties of their inference rules. To-date, most inference rules for diagrammatic logics have been designed from the perspective of a logician, aiming for the essential and, thus, desirable properties of soundness and completeness. However, this approach overlooks a fundamental goal of providing diagrammatic logics: to overcome barriers posed by symbolic logics to non-mathematicians. Even if the diagrams themselves are accessible, having inference rules that result in unwieldy proofs will fail to fulfil this fundamental goal. Thus, the time is ripe to fully address this goal and show how to design inference rules that give rise to more natural proofs. In this paper we take significant steps towards this ambitious target by devising new inference rules for spider diagrams. We demonstrate that they allow substantially shorter proofs to be written and, we argue, the resulting proofs are more natural.

We propose a resource-based model of human computer interaction, and discuss how WIP-POG, a rule-based language for multiset transformations, can support such a model. WIPPOG is here adopted as an enactment mechanism, for task models expressed by a visual notation. We exploit this resource-based perspective to model some common interaction errors and suggest possible prevention and mitigation strategies.

We present our research into visual languages for animating sketches. Animation is a rich mode of communication that is currently accessible to few. Simple animation systems exist, but severely restrict the types of motion that can be represented. Our field studies are demonstrating that would-be animators need to coordinate many objects moving in a variety of ways. The visual language described here allows a variety of motions to be defined with hand gestures, and gives visual feedback for coordination of events. This may open up computerized communication to users who think in dynamic visual images.

Microsoft TouchDevelop is a programming environment enabling users use their phones to create scripts that run on the mobile phones. This is achieved via a semi-structured editor and a programming language with several distinctive features, such as support for using smartphone hardware. In order to uncover opportunities for future tool development aimed at facilitating end-user programming of phones on phones, we have investigated the kinds of scripts that people are creating with the current tool set as well as what problems they ask for help with solving. This paper is the first to study how end-user programmers "in the wild" are programming mobile phones. In particular, no previous study has investigated the ways in which end users programmatically use mobile phones' special hardware (e.g., GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope) for practical everyday purposes. We discovered that, in essence, people are using TouchDevelop to create apps: downloadable applications with small, fairly reliable feature sets that take advantage of mobile hardware. In addition, we identified several areas for further innovation aimed at enhancing the programming tool and the online repository where users share scripts with one another.

One criterion that can be used to compare programming languages is learnability, or the ease with which a programming language can be learned by a programmer. Learnability has many aspects as well, such as mastery, change in performance over time, and initial learnability. This work examines a proposed measure of initial learnability that is based on the amount of time that a programmer needs to transfer his/her knowledge of one programming language to the understanding of another. The study design involves presenting human participants (who are programmers) with a sample of programming code written in a language that they know, alongside a sample of programming code implementing the same operations but in a language with which they are not familiar. The participant is then asked to examine the two samples of code, and then indicate when they feel that they are ready to reflect in writing on the differences and similarities between the familiar and the unfamiliar language. The proposed measure of initial learnability is the time it takes the participant to indicate that they are ready to proceed with the comparison. Repeating this procedure many times produces a series of learnability measures, each of which is connected to a pair of programming languages, i.e. each measurement characterizes the learnability of one programming language, given a subject's familiarity with another programming language. Because this approach is novel and not similar to other approaches tried in the past, we wish to gain some assurance of its validity before a full experiment. To do this, we plan to run a preexperiment using this study design but with natural languages instead of programming languages. The data from this preexperiment, if the approach is valid, will show that certain natural languages are easier to learn than others, given prior familiarity with similar languages. This study investigated the essential of meaningful automated feedback for programming assignments. Three different types of feedback were tested, including (a) What's wrong - what test cases were testing and which failed, (b) Gap - comparisons between expected and actual outputs, and (c) Hint - hints on how to fix problems if test cases failed. 46 students taking a CS2 participated in this study. They were divided into three groups, and the feedback configurations for each group were different: (1) Group One - What's wrong, (2) Group Two - What's wrong + Gap, (3) Group Three - What's wrong + Gap + Hint. This study found that simply knowing what failed did not help students sufficiently, and might stimulate system gaming behavior. Hints were not found to be impactful on student performance or their usage of automated feedback. Based on the findings, this study provides practical guidance on the design of automated feedback.

Rust is an industrial systems programming language unique in achieving memory safety without the need for a garbage collector. Instead, Rust relies on a unique and sometimes subtle resource ownership and borrowing system. This system can make learning Rust a challenge, even for experienced programmers. Motivated by these challenges, we introduce RustViz, a tool that allows an instructor to generate custom interactive timelines depicting ownership and borrowing events alongside Rust code examples embedded within learning material. These visualizations makes visible the static events, and subsequent state changes, that a Rust programmer must otherwise track entirely mentally. We have used RustViz to build a week-long Rust unit in a large undergraduate programming languages course. We demonstrate that this learning material, and the RustViz visualizations in particular, were valuable to students and led to the development of an accurate mental model of the essentials of ownership and borrowing in Rust.

To provide K-12 computing education for all, programming cannot be regulated to only computer science classes. Instead, computing education must be infused into all other required courses reaching all students through curriculum-integrated computing activities. This will pose challenges as students in these settings have an increasingly wide range of programming backgrounds. Additionally, teachers must feel comfortable not only teaching programming, but doing so in a meaningful context that integrates coding into their course topics. To truly meet the scale of this challenge, teachers will need to be able to develop meaningful integrated programming lessons, and have the supports necessary to implement them in a wide-variety of classes with students of vastly different skill-levels. This research will investigate two major means of aiding the rapid development and deployment of integrated block-based programming lessons in K-12 courses. The first will be through exploring design patterns for these integrated lessons, specifically focusing on how different activity types, scaffolding, and progressions affect classroom and student programming outcomes. The second will be in the research and development of generalized data-driven algorithms that will support novice teachers and students during programming in a wide-variety of block-based activities.

Many advances in science now require sophisticated scientific software applications that facilitate data and computationally intensive experiments. However, the effective utilization of existing computational power e.g., grid and cloud platforms depends on the capabilities of scientists to implement parallel, scalable code for such experiments. Currently, tools aimed at supporting scientists are either very limited to specific domains, or require significant development using low-level code. We describe our work towards a more end user-friendly scientific applications development process, notations and toolset. We introduce a scientific application designer intended for use primarily by scientists to enable them in describing workflow, processes, entities, formulae, computation and ultimately realization code for different computing platforms. This is achieved via a set of integrated, domain-specific visual and textual languages (DSVLs). A web-based modeling tool supports definition of new DSVLs and modeling of these applications. We are currently extending our tool to support generation of multi-core and GPU implementations, and visualization of results.
