Cellular automata are simulations of cells interacting with each other based on simple rules. Despite the simplicity, they can exhibit complex behaviour, and have a number of applications in fields such as medicine, biology, mathematics, and more. As a result, people from a variety of different backgrounds and skill-sets may find cellular automata useful to their work or research. There exist tools to explore well-known automata, but many require some form of textual programming ability, or do not offer easy and approachable ways to customise automata. Our software aims to be more accessible for those without backgrounds in programming or cellular automata, to allow users to more easily explore and modify automata. To achieve this, we have developed a visual programming language, where users can connect components to create their own automata from scratch, without any textual programming.

In the research community, it is very important to be able to recreate the same computing environment to reproduce the same results achieved by previous experiments. However, it is a challenge to recreate the same environment using the same programming languages, frameworks or data sources due to the diversity of researchers’ knowledge and the variety of computational environments *** this work, we propose to design and build a platform that allows researchers to create, (re-)execute and process computational experiments in a systematic and user-friendly manner. Our platform also includes the cataloging and a searching mechanism to improve data reusability as well as metadata classification to satisfy the needs of different research communities. With this work, we intend to improve the reusability of data and experiments and the reproducibility in the research domain.

The abstract nature of programming makes learning to code a daunting undertaking for many novice learners. In this work, we advocate the use of comics-a medium capable of presenting abstract ideas in a concrete, familiar way-for introducing programming concepts. Particularly, we propose a design process and related tools to help students and teachers create coding strips, a form of comic strips that are associated with a piece of code. We conducted two design workshops with students and high school computer science teachers to evaluate our design process and tools. We find that our design process and tools are effective at supporting the design of coding strips and that both students and teachers are excited about using coding strip as a tool for learning and teaching programming concepts.

Data workers are non-professional data scientists who often use scripting languages like R, Python, or MATLAB, and employ an exploratory programming workflow. Current IDEs offer them two main programming modalities: script files and computational notebooks. To understand how these modalities impact work practice, we conducted a study with 21 data workers, and a subsequent larger survey with 62 respondents. Through interviews, walkthroughs, and screen recordings, we collected information about their workflows. Our analysis shows a tension between scripts and computational notebooks. Scripts are more common, better support storage and execution of previous analyses, but hinder experimentation. Notebooks better suit the actual data science workflow, but can become easily unorganized. We discuss how this dual nature of modality usage leads to several issues that affect data workers' workflows, and discuss implications for the design of programming IDEs.

This paper illustrates coding decisions by in-service teachers and high school interns working independently versus collaboratively to build computing activities for non-computing classrooms. We investigate code written in Snap! to gain insights on project type and subject matter. We also share case studies on how intern collaboration influences final product execution. Through our research, we found student-only teams often created tutorial projects whereas teachers-only teams create interactive narratives. We found students were able to reuse code across projects to replicate similar mechanics and that students specialize in different aspects of project creation. Overall, we find it beneficial to have collaborative teacher-student teams.

Big data and analytics are increasingly used in different domains to gain insights and to improve decision-making. Developing big data analytics solutions is a complex task involving multidisciplinary teams and users - with no data science and programming background - to professional data scientists and software engineers. Different stakeholders work with a variety of data types, tasks and concepts in different languages from high-level domain concepts to low level programming languages and technical concepts. In order to advance the level of abstraction beyond low-level data analysis technical details, we demonstrate our BiDaML tool. BiDaML brings all stakeholders around one tool to specify, model and document their big data applications using a novel set of domain-specific visual languages (DSVLs).

New domain-specific languages for creating music and audio applications have typically been created in response to some technological challenge. Recent research has begun looking at how these languages impact our creative and aesthetic choices in music-making but we have little understanding on their effect on our wider programming practice. We present a survey that seeks to uncover what programming practices exist among interactive audio software developers and discover it is highly multi-practice, with developers adopting both exploratory programming and software engineering practice. A Q methodological study reveals that this multi-practice development is supported by different combinations of language features.

Although a large number of different debugging tools are available, very few CS students use them in programming courses. Instead, they try to understand and correct their code by adding countless print statements. We identified several reasons for these observations: (1) novice programmers find the standard debugging tools too complicated, especially the representation of the current program state, (2) they find it difficult to trace a problem back to its origin, and (3) it is not yet possible to provide them with a visualization of data structures that corresponds to the representation used in the classroom. We address these problems with BugVis, an alternative debugging approach. We describe the concept and basic ideas below, since BugVis has not yet been fully realized.

Many K-12 CS education instructors are new to teaching computing and use block-based programming (BBP), allowing them and their students to learn computing concepts with less frustration. Based on prior work with instructors, we found that they need assistance with grading student projects as they are new to coding and developing corresponding assessments. Existing methods are either not intuitive and too restrictive for custom assignments, or tediously unnecessary. Additionally, providing a grading support tool will help increase adoption of our Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles curriculum. Therefore, we began developing a tool to assist teachers with grading BBP projects. This paper reports on a modified User Experience Research method, which we used to determine the critical and necessary features needed for the tool to allow teachers to successfully and efficiently assess BBP student artifacts.

Jupyter Notebook [1] is an open source, interactive computing platform widely used in the scientific computing and artificial intelligence community [2], [3], [4], [5]. The popularity of the platform is a consequence of the generated single notebook document combining source code, markdown, and visualizations (Fig. 1). This makes the platform ideal for tasks such as data analysis and scientific image processing, where repeatability and transparency of analysis tasks are just as important as functionality and performance. However, the obligatory use of code is an obstacle to acceptance of the platform in scientific communities where programming is not generally taught in the curriculum. Consequently, many experimental communities rely on manual image processing using graphical user interfaces [6], [7], [8]. The obvious disadvantages are the lack of repeatability, transparency, and precision in image processing and data analysis tasks. To solve these issues, we propose to extend Jupyter Notebook with visual programming cells. In each visual programming cell, users can create the program by assembling graphical nodes that represent computational instructions, and the textual program is automatically generated and executed by the environment. Cells will support version control aware serialization and deserialization. The core innovation of our proposed work lies in a change of workflow and the adaption of a jupyter-based workflow in experimental communities that have no culture of working with source code. The system can be adapted to multiple applications and domains by integrating new node types. We hereby present an early version of the system and provide one use case from microscopy image processing to demonstrate the integration of existing non-Python software.
