Model transformations are an important part of Model Driven Engineering (MDE). To generate a transformation with current MDE approaches, users are required to specify (or provide) complex meta-models and then engage in quite low-level coding in textual transformation scripting languages. This paper introduces a new approach to visualising source and target models that allows specifiers of complex data transformations to use the resultant visual notations for specifying transformations by example using drag and drop. We demonstrate the applicability of our new approach by an example case study.

Recently, a radically new environment for end-user programming on mobile devices has been proposed. One of its representatives, TouchDevelop developed by Microsoft Research, has successfully drawn more than 5000 users, who have published around 30 thousands TouchDevelop scripts online. In this work, I introduce an approach to better manage the existing code base written by end users through a version-control and code-search system, and thus improve the productivity of end-user programming on mobile devices.

Several modeling domains make use of three-dimensional representations, e.g., the "ball-and-stick" models of molecules. Our generator framework DEViL3D supports the design and implementation of visual 3D languages for such modeling purposes. The front-end of a language implementation generated by DEViL3D is a dedicated 3D graphical structure editor, which is used to construct programs in that domain. DEViL3D supports the language designer to describe the visual appearance of the constructs of the particular language in terms of generic 3D depictions. Their parameters specify where substructures are embedded, and how the graphic adapts to space requirements of nested constructs. This paper motivates 3D visual languages and illustrates the specification process for 3D languages using DEViL3D with focus on generic depictions.

Timed Modelling Spider Diagrams (TMSDs) are a visual language which supports the modeling of object-oriented systems with time constraints. They are used to define policies in which TMSDs specify admissible evolutions of the state of some instance. We define a process for deriving a rewriting system from a policy specification, so that the generated system defines a language of sequences of basic TMSDs satisfying the policy. Moreover, by identifying the different ways in which the constraints set by the policy can be violated, we can produce special rules whose application results in erroneous sequences. The resulting transformation systems can be used both to simulate possible behaviours when reasoning on the definition of policies and to test policy verification algorithms.

Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) encourages the use of graphical modeling tools, which facilitate the development process from modeling to coding. Such tools can be designed using the MDE approach into metamodeling environments called metaCASE tools. It turned out that current metaCASE tools still require, in most cases, manual programming to build full tool support for the modeling language, especially for users' native methodologies and representational elements and suffer from gaps in terms of reusability. In this context, we propose MID, a set of metamodels supporting the specification of modeling editors by means of reusable components and explain how representational metamodeling is carried out with it.

Integrating new input devices and their associated interaction techniques into interactive applications has always been challenging and time-consuming, due to the learning curve and technical complexity involved. Modeling devices, interactions and applications helps reducing the accidental complexity. visual modeling languages can hide an important part of the technical aspects involved in the development process, thus allowing a faster and less error-prone development process. However, even with the help of modeling, a gap remains to be bridged in order to go from models to the actual implementation of the interactive application. In this paper we use ICO, a visual formalism based on high-level Petri nets, to develop a generic layered framework for specifying executable models of interaction using gestural input devices. By way of the CASE tool Petshop we demonstrate the framework's feasibility to handle the Kinect and gesture-based interaction techniques. We validate the approach through two case studies that illustrate how to use executable, reusable and extensible ICO models to develop gesture-based applications.

Large software projects are often based on libraries that provide abstractions for a particular domain such as writing database queries, staging, or constraint solving. The API provided by such a library can be considered a domain-specific language within the implementation language of the library, a so-called internal or embedded domain-specific language (eDSL). Embedding a DSL leverages the tool infrastructure of the host language, but also restricts the syntax and IDE support to that of the host language. This restriction prevents programmers from using convenient specialized notations and, thus, has a negative effect on their productivity. To address this problem, we outline concepts for a structured code editor that enable developers of eDSLs to customize how eDSL code is rendered and what interactions are available. We demonstrate the benefits of our approach by customizing a structured editor for the .NET Code Contracts API. Our prototype shows in particular that we can customize many aspects of visualization and interaction with little effort.

Many advances in science now require sophisticated scientific software applications that facilitate data and computationally intensive experiments. However, the effective utilization of existing computational power e.g., grid and cloud platforms depends on the capabilities of scientists to implement parallel, scalable code for such experiments. Currently, tools aimed at supporting scientists are either very limited to specific domains, or require significant development using low-level code. We describe our work towards a more end user-friendly scientific applications development process, notations and toolset. We introduce a scientific application designer intended for use primarily by scientists to enable them in describing workflow, processes, entities, formulae, computation and ultimately realization code for different computing platforms. This is achieved via a set of integrated, domain-specific visual and textual languages (DSVLs). A web-based modeling tool supports definition of new DSVLs and modeling of these applications. We are currently extending our tool to support generation of multi-core and GPU implementations, and visualization of results.

New technologies are entering medical practice at an astounding pace. However, these technologies often cause to doctors learn and use difficulties. Then, doctors require assistance of a biomedical engineer. This is currently happening in a local hospital that has new technology to analyze biomechanical protocols in patients. Protocols are used to measure performances and identify changes in human body movements and muscles. Doctors are neither familiar with the concepts nor tools used, so biomedical engineers carry out descriptions of protocols rather than doctors. In this paper, we present the design of a domain-specific language that enables doctors to specify biomechanical protocols by addressing learning barriers (using design patterns). We also make doctors' descriptions compatible with the existing tools, and we also support legacy biomedical descriptions (combining meta-modeling and model transformations).

TouchDevelop represents a new programming environment that enables users to develop mobile applications directly on mobile devices. TouchDevelop has successfully drawn a huge number of end users, who have published thousands of TouchDevelop scripts online. To enhance end-user programming on mobile devices, we conduct a comprehensive field study of 17322 TouchDevelop scripts and 4275 users. Our study consists of an overall study on the characteristics of scripts (e.g., structural features, code reuse) and users (e.g., expertise), and a longitudinal study on how they evolve over time. Our study results show important characteristics of scripts such as dense external method calls, high code-reuse ratio, and also reveal interesting evolution patterns of users. The findings and implications in our study provide valuable guidelines for improving tool support or services for end users and increasing the popularity of end-user programming on mobile devices.
