Several modeling domains make use of three-dimensional representations, e.g., the “ball-and-stick” models of molecules. Our generator framework DEViL3D supports the design and implementation of visual 3D languages for such modeling purposes. The front-end of a language implementation generated by DEViL3D is a dedicated 3D graphical structure editor, which is used to construct programs in that domain. DEViL3D supports the language designer to describe the visual appearance of the constructs of the particular language in terms of generic 3D depictions. Their parameters specify where substructures are embedded, and how the graphic adapts to space requirements of nested constructs. This paper motivates 3D visual languages and illustrates the specification process for 3D languages using DEViL3D with focus on generic depictions.

Web active end users often coalesce web information using web mashups. Web contents, however, tend to evolve frequently, and along with the black box nature of visual languages this complicates the process of debugging mashups. While debugging, end users need to locate faults within the code and then find a way to correct them; this process requires them to seek information related to web page content and behavior. In this paper, using an information foraging theory lens, we qualitatively study the debugging behaviors of 16 web-active end users. Our results show that the stronger scents available within mashup programming environments can improve users' foraging success. Our results lead to a new model for debugging activities framed in terms of information foraging theory, and to a better understanding of ways in which end-user programming environments can be enhanced to better support debugging.

Spreadsheets are being used with many different purposes that range from toy applications to complete information systems. In any of these cases, they are often used as data repositories that can grow significantly. As the amount of data grows, it also becomes more difficult to extract concrete information out of them. This paper focuses on the problem of spreadsheet querying. In particular, we propose an expressive and composable technique where intuitive queries can be defined. Our approach builds on a model-driven spreadsheet development environment, and queries are expressed referencing entities in the model of a spreadsheet instead of in its actual data. Finally, the system that we have implemented relies on Google's query function for spreadsheets.

In this paper, we report on an empirical study exploring the nature of mental models of spreadsheet authors when they are explaining and debugging their own spreadsheets. Study participants were first asked to explain one of their own spreadsheets, and then to find and fix seeded errors in the same spreadsheets. Talk-aloud protocols were collected and analyzed to reveal the nature of participants' mental models in these activities. The findings indicate that the authors explain their spreadsheets mainly in terms of real-world and problem domain concepts; in debugging, they constantly switch between problem domain concepts and spreadsheet-specific concepts, although they mainly use spreadsheet-specific concepts to fix an identified error. These study findings provide insights on the need for developing spreadsheet authoring and debugging tools that correspond to spreadsheet authors' mental models of spreadsheets.

Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) encourages the use of graphical modeling tools, which facilitate the development process from modeling to coding. Such tools can be designed using the MDE approach into metamodeling environments called metaCASE tools. It turned out that current metaCASE tools still require, in most cases, manual programming to build full tool support for the modeling language, especially for users' native methodologies and representational elements and suffer from gaps in terms of reusability. In this context, we propose MID, a set of metamodels supporting the specification of modeling editors by means of reusable components and explain how representational metamodeling is carried out with it.

Large software projects are often based on libraries that provide abstractions for a particular domain such as writing database queries, staging, or constraint solving. The API provided by such a library can be considered a domain-specific language within the implementation language of the library, a so-called internal or embedded domain-specific language (eDSL). Embedding a DSL leverages the tool infrastructure of the host language, but also restricts the syntax and IDE support to that of the host language. This restriction prevents programmers from using convenient specialized notations and, thus, has a negative effect on their productivity. To address this problem, we outline concepts for a structured code editor that enable developers of eDSLs to customize how eDSL code is rendered and what interactions are available. We demonstrate the benefits of our approach by customizing a structured editor for the .NET Code Contracts API. Our prototype shows in particular that we can customize many aspects of visualization and interaction with little effort.

Many advances in science now require sophisticated scientific software applications that facilitate data and computationally intensive experiments. However, the effective utilization of existing computational power e.g., grid and cloud platforms depends on the capabilities of scientists to implement parallel, scalable code for such experiments. Currently, tools aimed at supporting scientists are either very limited to specific domains, or require significant development using low-level code. We describe our work towards a more end user-friendly scientific applications development process, notations and toolset. We introduce a scientific application designer intended for use primarily by scientists to enable them in describing workflow, processes, entities, formulae, computation and ultimately realization code for different computing platforms. This is achieved via a set of integrated, domain-specific visual and textual languages (DSVLs). A Web-based modeling tool supports definition of new DSVLs and modeling of these applications. We are currently extending our tool to support generation of multi-core and GPU implementations, and visualization of results.

This paper gives an outline of a visual model of a cardiac pacemaker system, a case study from the grand challenge in software verification. The model is expressed in the visual Contract Language (VCL), a formal modelling language that describes predicates visually. From VCL diagrams it is possible to generate Z specifications. This is the first visual and formal model of one of the software verification challenges.

This paper compares the suitability of visual modelling languages for describing tangible user interface (TUI) applications. After gathering different approaches, we have selected three languages for our comparative study: the visual object constraint language (VOCL), augmented constraint diagrams (ACD), and the visual contract language (VCL). A weighted evaluation based on multiple quality criteria led to the conclusion that VCL is best suited to model TUI applications.
