We propose a human-centred model for abstraction, modelling and computing in function-driven spatial design for architecture. The primitive entities of our design conception ontology and computing framework are driven by classic notions of `structure, function, and affordance' in design, and are directly based on the fundamental human perceptual and analytical modalities of visual and locomotive exploration of space. With an emphasis on design semantics, our model for spatial design marks a fundamental shift from contemporary modelling and computational foundations underlying engineering-centred computer aided design systems. We demonstrate the application of our model within a system for human-centred computational design analysis and simulation. We also illustrate the manner in which our design modelling and computing framework seamlessly builds on contemporary industry data modelling standards within the architecture and construction informatics communities.

It is becoming increasingly common for scientists and engineers to use software simulations to replace dangerous or expensive experimentation. In other domains, such as earth science, experiments may not be particularly dangerous or expensive, but take so long that it is more efficient for scientists and engineers to use software simulations instead of performing direct experimentation. Because of this heavy reliance on the results of software simulations, it is vital for the software to produce accurate results. To help ensure accurate results, software should be correctly designed and implemented. In more general applications, software engineering (SE) researchers and practitioners have developed practices that help developers design their software and implement those designs.

In behavioral programming, scenarios are used to program the behavior of reactive systems. Behavioral programming originated in the language of live sequence charts (LSC), a visual formalism based on multi-modal scenarios, and supported by a mechanism for directly executing a system described by a set of LSCs. In an exploratory experiment, we compare programming using LSCs with procedural programming using Java, and seek the best interface for creating the visual artifact of LSCs. Several interfaces for creating LSCs were tested, among them a novel interactive natural language interface (NL). Our preliminary results indicate that even experts in procedural programming preferred the LSCs NL interface over the Java alternative, and their implementation times were comparable to those of the other interfaces tested. The results indicate that the NL interface, combined with the scenario-based essence of LSCs, may be a viable alternative to conventional programming.

As a research community, we currently know very little about the challenges faced by blind software developers. Without knowing what those challenges are, the community cannot effectively address these challenges. In this paper, we describe the first exploratory empirical study, where we conducted eight interviews with blind software developers to identify aspects of software development that are a challenge. Our results suggest that visually impaired software developers face challenges, for instance, when using screen readers to look up information when writing code. We discuss a variety of implications, including that blind software developers need additional support in discovering relevant software development tools.

Requirements are typically modelled in natural language, leading to inconsistencies, incompleteness and incorrectness due to inherent natural language ambiguities and lack of precise modelling rules. In previous work, we developed a technique and toolset to support extraction of requirements from English text and supporting semi-formal modelling and roundtrip refinement using Essential use cases, helping to mitigate some of these problems. In this paper we describe new work applying this human-centric approach to requirements engineering to the Malay language. We describe an extension of our original Essential Use Cases toolset to support requirements modelling in the Malay language essential interaction modelling, and results of a preliminary experiment to gauge our tool's effectiveness in supporting Malay natural language extraction and round-trip requirements refinement.

It is well recognized that visualizing traceability links between software artifacts helps developers to recover, browse, and maintain these inter-relationships effectively and efficiently. However, it is a major challenge for researchers to efficiently visualize traceability links for big software systems because of scalability and visual clutter issues. In this paper we present a new approach that combines treemap and hierarchical tree visualization techniques to provide a global structure of traces and a detailed overview of each trace. These both reduce visual clutter while still being highly scalable and interactive. Our usability study shows that our approach can support comprehension, browsing, and maintenance of traceability links.

Contemporary Geographic Information Systems (GIS software) are, in some cases, extended by components for visual programming. These components are used to design a dataflow process. In this poster two examples of components are assessed. These are ModelBuilder in ArcGIS Desktop 10 and the Workflow Designer in AutoCAD Map 3D 2012. In both components for visual programming users are offered a possibility to graphically design steps for spatial data processing. The interfaces, graphic elements and a functionality scope vary greatly between these two components. An assessment is presented from both cognitive as well as usability point of view. AutoCAD Map is based on ideas of Windows Workflow Foundation. ModelBuilder is the solution by Esri Company. Moreover, an output model from ModelBuilder can be converted from graphical sketch to textual scripting language Python. The output Python script can also be used as the starting point for novice programmers. A practical application of a model for batch processing is presented as an example that demonstrates the cartographic generalization-smoothing of vector data for the smaller map scale in ArcGIS ModelBuilder. The following example demonstrates workflow for the spatial function Create Buffer of data in AutoCAD Map Workflow Designer. The presented experiences are based on several years of lecturing at the university. Both visual components are taught within the study program “Geoinformatics” at Palacký University.

Informing caregivers by providing them with contextual medical information can significantly improve the quality of patient care activities. However, information flow in hospitals is still tied to traditional manual or digitised lengthy patient record files that are often not accessible while caregivers are attending to patients. Leveraging the proliferation of pervasive awareness technologies (sensors, actuators and mobile displays), recent studies have explored this information presentation aspect borrowing theories from context-aware computing, i.e., presenting subtle information contextually to support the activity at hand. However, the understanding of the information space (i.e., what information should be presented) is still fairly abstruse, which inhibits the deployment of such real-time activity support systems. To this end, this paper first presents situated glyphs, a graphical entity to encode situation specific information, and then presents our findings from an in-situ qualitative study addressing the information space tailored to such glyphs. Applying technology probes using situated glyphs and different glyph display form factors, the study aimed at uncovering the information space pertained to both primary and secondary medical care. Our analysis has resulted in a large set of information types as well as given us deeper insight on the principles for designing future situated glyphs. We report our findings in this paper that we expect would provide a solid foundation for designing future assistive systems to support patient care activities.
