Many domain specific textual languages have been developed for generating complex reports. These are challenging for novice users to learn, understand and use. We describe our work developing the prototype of a new visual language tool for a company to augment their textual report writing language. We describe key motivations for our visual language tool solution, its architecture, design and development using Microsoft DSL tools, and its evaluation by end-users.

The dichotomy between programs and data projects itself onto two paradigms in software visualisation: programs are visualised by program animation, and data is visualised by algorithm animation. We put forward a programming paradigm where, like functional or logic programming, and some rewriting paradigms, programs and data are represented at the same level - program are just one particular kind of data. Animation of these programs/algorithms breaks the dichotomy and leads to an alternative perspective on visualisation. Our paradigm is a graphical one, and thus is exceptionally well suited for visualisation.

In current mobile user interface design tools, it is time consuming to export a design to the target device. This makes it hard for designers to iterate over the user interfaces they are creating. We propose Gummy-live, a GUI builder for mobile devices allowing designers to test and observe immediately on the target device each step they take in the GUI builder. This way, designers are stimulated to iteratively test and refine user interface prototypes in order to take the target device characteristics into account.

In many domains, decision makers want to find and understand patterns of events as these patterns often give insight into the causal relationships among events. Current systems to specify patterns are either too difficult to use or only support simple patterns. We present QueryMarvel, an interactive visual query environment that allows ordinary users to easily and efficiently specify complex temporal patterns. It uses and extends the semantic elements and rules of comic strips with the goal to make specifying and interpreting temporal patterns as easy as reading and writing a comic story. User tests show that using QueryMarvel, users can understand and create temporal patterns faster and with fewer errors than using a form-based interface.

For developers debugging their own code, augmenting the code of others, or trying to learn the implementation details of interactive behaviors, understanding how web pages work is a fundamental problem. FireCrystal is a new Firefox extension that allows developers to indicate interactive behaviors of interest, and shows the specific code (Javascript, CSS, and HTML) that is responsible for those behaviors. FireCrystal provides an execution timeline that users can scrub back and forth, and the ability to select items of interest in the actual web page UI to see the associated code. FireCrystal may be especially useful for developers who are trying to learn the implementation details of interactive behaviors, so they can reuse these behaviors in their own web site.

When conceiving of and implementing interactive behaviors, most designers rely on professional software developers to prototype and implement their designs. They often use static drawings or animations to convey how their application should work. While these drawings are effective in conveying the look of an application, they do not effectively communicate its feel. In addition, other barriers prevent many interaction designers from taking full advantage of computational tools. We plan to address this by building a new development language and environment especially suited for creating and prototyping interactive applications. In this paper, several related studies and their implications for the design of such a language are discussed.

Domain specific languages (DSLs) play a cornerstone role in Model-Driven Software Development for representing models and metamodels. DSLs' abstract syntax are usually defined by a metamodel. In-place model transformations provide an intuitive way to complement metamod-els with behavioral specifications. In this paper we extend in-place rules with a quantitative model of time and with mechanisms that allow designers to state action properties, facilitating the design of real-time complex systems. This approach avoids making unnatural changes to the DSL metamodels to represent behavioral and time aspects. We present the graphical modeling tool we have built for visually specifying these timed specifications.

We present the theoretical foundation, the design and the implementation of a library, called EulerVC to interactively handle Euler diagrams for the purposes of resource management. Fast on-line algorithms to interpret wellformed diagrams have been developed utilising a new notion of marked points to keep track of the zone sets. The interface allows the construction of overlapping ellipses to represent categories together with the drag and drop of resources in order to categories them. A visual indicator can be used to show if the diagram under construction is not wellformed to assist in reducing user mistakes, and sets of tags can be assigned to resources upon export. The generic approach is demonstrated via an integration with the bookmarking site delicious.

Little is known about the formation of people's first perceptions about computers and computer code, yet it is likely that these impressions have a lasting effect on peoples' use of technology in their lives and careers. Brief autobiographical essays about these first impressions were solicited from a diverse population of young adults and these essays were analyzed for factors that contributed to positive and negative attitudes about technology, formation of self-efficacy, and authors' relationship with computing later in life. The results suggest that first encounters with code must be accessible, error-tolerant and socially engaging, that mentorship can be a crucial factor in the acquisition of programming skills, and that cultivating positive self-efficacy in programming skills requires repeated positive exposure across the lifespan. These results raise several issues for novice programming languages and tools and suggest a number of new approaches to computing education.

Our generator framework DEVIL supports the development of visual languages. It generates complete language implementations from high-level specifications including advanced graphical structure editors. It has been successfully used for a wide range of domain specific visual languages. For a DSL that has an execution semantics, e.g. a processor specification language, it is desirable to simulate and to visualize program execution for purposes of analysis or evaluation. This paper shows how DEViL is extended to generate a simulator for a visual language from specification of its state transition model. Without the need of any further specification a smooth animation of program execution using a technique of graphical interpolation is generated automatically. Further advanced animations can easily be obtained by simply associating some "animated visual patterns" to standardized operations of the simulator. DEViL provides a large variety of such patterns which encapsulate the implementation of certain useful animation effects. Our approach has proven to be effective for the animation of several DSLs.
