Numerous approaches to pixel rewriting systems (PRSs) have been investigated since Furnas' Bitpict. VRule is a new pixel rewriting framework designed to support further investigation of new formalisms for end-user modeling with PRSs, and is implemented as a Pattern Directed Inference System (PDIS) with specialized classes of antecedent and consequent Pattern Directed Modules (PDM) components. This overview briefly examines VRule's key elements resulting from exploration of the architectural aspects of rule-based engines to include matching, rule resolution, and execution in a spatial environment, as well as numerous new PDM formalisms. Examples representing classes of modeling domains have been developed to include Turing machines, 1D/2D/3D cellular automata, a game of Fox and Hounds, Langton's Ant (turmites), a climatological gas model originally written in C#, and a virological infection model originally written in Python.

The rapid advancement of technology and increased access to computing knowledge have led to a rise in the adoption of computing skills, such as programming and complex software. As a result, online platforms such as Coursera, EdX, and Udacity have recently seen some of their highest enrollments in Machine Learning (ML) and other advanced courses. Platforms such as Medium and YouTube have also witnessed an explosion of informational resources on computing-related topics [1]. Although there is an abundance of educational materials on computing and tools that enable individuals to self-learn, learners may not necessarily be able to effectively self-direct their learning [2].

SQL is a typical query language for performing data analytics. Although its usage is ubiquitous, learners experience that query formulation in SQL is error-prone and time-consuming. Prior research has shown that this is due to low expressive ease, extensive training requirements and high cognitive load, all of which present a significant burden for SQL learners. visual representations can assist learners to significantly lower this burden. The current dominant paradigm aims to facilitate SQL querying by helping users to avoid the syntax of SQL. Such visual Querying Systems (VQS), however, are not effective for SQL learners as they hide the syntax of the language during query formulation, rather than assisting learners to write correct queries in SQL. Furthermore, training with VQSs is system specific, which leads to system dependency for learners. We argue that novices need support from visual Query Representation (VQR) solutions which, instead, help them in learning how to write correct and portable SQL queries. In this paper we present SQLVis, a VQR to support novice SQL users in query writing. Our system represents the query as written in SQL by the user, which can improve the SQL writing proficiency of its users. Results of an in depth empirical study demonstrate the significant value of SQLVis for learners.

In science, it is very important to be able to recreate the same computing environment to reproduce the same results achieved by previous scientific experiments. However, it is challenging to create a shareable package with the same environment using the same programming languages, frameworks, or data sources due to the diversity of researchers’ knowledge and the variety of computational environments used. In this work, I propose designing and constructing a conversational user interface that allows researchers to upload experiment files and clarify the necessary information via text communication to create a reproducible experiment package. My approach uses an integrated Large Language Model (LLM) that allows the platform to infer, whenever possible, some information (e.g., the programming language used, the main file to be executed, the parameters needed to be inserted when executing) to reduce the amount of information asked to the user. With this work, I intend to use an LLM to guide the researcher through this procedure, thereby reducing the time spent and the number of interactions required to create a reproducible package.

Developers work with different programming languages and tools throughout their careers. It is a critical skill to be able to build on existing skills and knowledge and learn new programming languages as needed. This makes exploring how developers learn and comprehend different types of programming languages an interesting problem. The research question I plan to address with my research is: how do developers' mental model change when they learn and understand code written in different families of programming languages? My research goals are to leverage empirical software engineering and cognitive sciences to understand learning and program comprehension in developers for answering this research question. I do this by conducting empirical studies on comprehension patterns of developers of varying skill levels using different language paradigms (imperative, declarative, and functional) while they work on a varied set of software tasks such as bug fixes, verification of static analysis alarms, adding new features, code refactoring, and code summarization. The proposed empirical studies are designed using a combination of online questionnaires and biometric equipment (eye trackers) and are performed on both program comprehension and a set of established cognitive tasks with the aim of determining whether there is indeed a relationship between these different tasks and domains on performance. The eye tracking biometric measures provide fine grained details on what tokens/words in code/text developers look at as they work. This better explains the thought process and mental models developers use to solve tasks. I propose multiple studies for which I will recruit both students and professional developers in order to understand the strategies of different levels of expertise. In addition, various other factors such as native language, reading speed, years of experience, programming expertise, cognitive scores (among others) will be used to further describe the data collect

In the era of ubiquitous Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) systems have emerged as pivotal in advancing societal progress. Yet, their complexity often requires the expertise of professionals, presenting an entry barrier for less-experienced computing practitioners. In the realm of human-Centered AI (HCAI), ongoing research is developing new approaches to engage users via intuitive interfaces in the design of ML-based systems. For example, visual Programming languages (VPLs) and no-code platforms offer user-friendly experiences by avoiding complex computational operations. However, literature on VPL-based tools for novices reveals a gap: many tools offer limited interpretability approaches or are overly complex for easy customization. To address this gap, we developed the PyFlowML prototype, an open-source, flow-based programming tool with a focus on Explainable AI (XAI). This study aims to set a benchmark in the field by comparing PyFlowML with KNIME, a similar tool known for its usability among domain specialists. Our results show that domain specialists perceive flow-based language tools as valuable. This study highlights the potential of VPL-based tools to make the design of trustworthy ML-based systems more inclusive, thereby contributing to the advancement of AI democratization.

Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines play a vital role in the DevOps process, enabling developers to automate and enhance software delivery. However, the existence of multiple technologies, such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, or Jenkins, poses challenges due to their lack of interoperability and the use of different programming languages for pipeline construction. To address these challenges and improve the CI/CD process, our objective is to develop a block-based language specifically designed for representing CI/CD pipelines. With our language, we intend to empower users to more easily create correct pipelines. Through an interactive and user-friendly process, our approach guides users in constructing pipelines, ensuring accuracy and reducing errors. Additionally, our language will facilitate seamless transitions between different pipeline technologies, providing users with flexibility and ease of adoption.

As the field of computing has advanced over the years, how we engage and innovate as a society has as well. From computing practitioners that develop the technologies to end-users, the internet has become a central hub for our daily activities. There have been numerous efforts to ensure that the content in online social communities like Twitter are inclusive. However, despite the history of harmful terminology use in computing, little work explicitly attempts to provide support for detecting and correcting offensive language in online programming communities like GitHub. This paper introduces the Hate Detector, a web application for detecting and correcting harmful terminology in computing artifacts. The current implementation connects with GitHub and uses existing resources and corpora to support the analysis of repository markdown files. Our ongoing efforts aim to evaluate and scale the Hate Detector across and beyond GitHub projects to further promote inclusive practices in online programming communities.

The growing need for programming and computational skills has led to a demand for teaching approaches that can appeal to a broader audience. We explore the design and creation of tangible objects and interactions to make introductory programming concepts more engaging and less tedious. We introduce TangiBooks, a platform that uses paper-based tangibles with embedded electronics and augments paper with sensory interactions like visuals, sounds, haptics, and kinesthetics to reinforce learning. The platform is implemented as proof-of-concept and offers four self-contained lessons on key concepts such as algorithms, variables, conditionals, and loops. Results from our observational study (12 adult learners, 6 instructors) showed that participants found TangiBooks to be playful, appealing to their senses, and valuable for sparking curiosity, with potential pedagogical benefits for promoting reflection among learners. TangiBooks has implications for HCI researchers in furthering the design space of paper-based tangibles in the learning domain and empowering instructors to innovate and personalize lessons.
