Integrated development environments (IDEs) are ubiquitous in software development. Despite their popularity, much of their designs are not based on empirical findings and have been virtually unchanged since their inception. More recently, researchers have proposed alternative IDE designs based on observational studies of developers and found promising benefits. However, many design decisions are still unsupported by empirical evidence. Towards designing an empirically-driven IDE, we performed an analysis on code size and screen space. First, we analyzed the size of code from 95 projects in 4 programming languages. Second, we calculated how much code can fit onscreen using various document arrangements in VS Code with common screen resolutions. We found (1) the length of code depends on the programming language, while the width of code is similar across languages and (2) the amount of code onscreen can be substantially increased by properly configuring the IDE and by using a high-resolution monitor.

To provide K-12 computing education for all, programming cannot be regulated to only computer science classes. Instead, computing education must be infused into all other required courses reaching all students through curriculum-integrated computing activities. This will pose challenges as students in these settings have an increasingly wide range of programming backgrounds. Additionally, teachers must feel comfortable not only teaching programming, but doing so in a meaningful context that integrates coding into their course topics. To truly meet the scale of this challenge, teachers will need to be able to develop meaningful integrated programming lessons, and have the supports necessary to implement them in a wide-variety of classes with students of vastly different skill-levels. This research will investigate two major means of aiding the rapid development and deployment of integrated block-based programming lessons in K-12 courses. The first will be through exploring design patterns for these integrated lessons, specifically focusing on how different activity types, scaffolding, and progressions affect classroom and student programming outcomes. The second will be in the research and development of generalized data-driven algorithms that will support novice teachers and students during programming in a wide-variety of block-based activities.

Block-based programming has been overwhelmingly successful in revitalizing introductory computing education and in facilitating end-user development. However, poor code quality makes block-based programs hard to understand, modify, and reuse, thus hurting the educational and productivity effectiveness of blocks. There is great potential benefit in empowering programmers in this domain to systematically improve the code quality of their projects. Refactoring improving code quality while preserving its semantics has been widely adopted in traditional software development. In this work, we introduce refactoring to Scratch. We define four new Scratch refactorings: Extract Custom Block, Extract Parent Sprite, Extract Constant, and Reduce Variable Scope. To automate the application of these refactorings, we enhance the Scratch programming environment with powerful program analysis and transformation routines. To evaluate the utility of these refactorings, we apply them to remove the code smells detected in a representative dataset of 448 Scratch projects. We also conduct a between-subjects user study with 24 participants to assess how our refactoring tools impact. programmers. Our results show that refactoring improves the subjects' code quality metrics, while our refactoring tools help motivate programmers to improve code quality.

The real-time prediction for the requirement of an air-ambulance (helicopter) response is very helpful in improving patient outcomes for emergency medical services (EMS). Generally, experienced and qualified Intensive Care Paramedics evaluate each incident call manually. However, during busy times with high volumes of calls, evaluating all potential incidents in a timely manner may be difficult. In this paper, we present the use of Machine Learning approach for Air ambulance prediction on an EMS dataset provided by St John New Zealand. This will give an indicator for each incident on the probability the incident requires a helicopter response, which can then be incorporated into real time information support provided to Air Desk Paramedics. In this case study, Random Forest was selected which showed promising results against some other methods, and has a potential to gain a better performance by doing feature selection and parameter optimization. This method was tested to have almost 94% classification accuracy.

Online step-by-step text and video tutorials play an integral role in learning feature-rich software applications. However, when searching, users can find it difficult to assess whether a tutorial is designed for their level of software expertise. Novice users can struggle when a tutorial is out of their reach, whereas more advanced users can end up wasting time with overly simple, first-principles instruction. To assist users in selecting tutorials, we investigate the feasibility of using machine-learning techniques to automatically assess a tutorial's difficulty. Using Photoshop as our primary testbed, we develop a set of distinguishable tutorial features, and use these features to train a classifier that can label a tutorial as either Beginner or Advanced with 85% accuracy. To illustrate a potential application, we developed a tutorial browsing interface called TutVis. Our initial user evaluation provides insight into TutVis's ability to support users in a range of tutorial selection scenarios.

humans are a key part of software development, including customers, designers, coders, testers and end users. In this keynote talk I explain why incorporating human-centric issues into software engineering for next-generation applications is critical. I use several examples from our recent and current work on handling human-centric issues when engineering various `smart living' cloud- and edge-based software systems. This includes using human-centric, domain-specific visual models for non-technical experts to specify and generate data analysis applications; personality impact on aspects of software activities; incorporating end user emotions into software requirements engineering for smart homes; incorporating human usage patterns into emerging edge computing applications; visualising smart city-related data; reporting diverse software usability defects; and human-centric security and privacy requirements for smart living systems. I assess the usefulness of these approaches, highlight some outstanding research challenges, and briefly discuss our current work on new human-centric approaches to software engineering for smart living applications.

Code review is a common practice in the software industry, in contexts spanning from open to close source, and from free to proprietary software. Modern code reviews are essentially conducted using cloud-based dedicated tools. Existing review tools focus in textual code. In contrast, support of low-code software languages, namely visual Programming languages (VPLs), is not readily available. This presents a challenge for the effectiveness of the review process with a VPL. This showpiece will present VPLreviewer, a code review tool for VPLs. VPLreviewer provides a wide range of mechanisms previously not available to a VPL. It is expected to improve of communication among the stakeholders who have to review artifacts constructed with VPLs, with mechanisms that are easy to learn, use and understand.

We know very little about why developers do what they do. Lab studies are all very well, but often their results (e.g. that static type systems make development faster) seem contradicted by practice (e.g. developers choosing JavaScript or Python rather than Java or C#). In this paper we build a first cut of a theory of why developers do what they do with a focus on the domain of static versus dynamic programming languages. We used a qualitative research method - Grounded Theory, to interview a number of developers (n=15) about their experience using static and dynamic languages, and constructed a Grounded Theory of their programming language choices.

Today, there are hundreds of programming languages that are widely used. Programmers at all levels are expected to become proficient in multiple languages. Experienced programmers who have knowledge of at least one language are able to learn a second language much quicker than novices. However, the transfer process can still be difficult when there exists numerous differences from their previous language. Documentation, online courses and tutorials tend to present information geared towards novices. This type of presentation might suffice for beginners, but it doesn't support learning for experienced programmers [1] who would benefit from leveraging their knowledge of previous programming languages.
