EIT (Electrical Impedance Tomography) is a novel imaging method visualizing impedance changes in the thorax mainly influenced by breathing and heart beating. Unfortunately, this technique has a poor image resolution. To improve the quality of EIT images, computer scientists and medical researchers are working together on the image reconstruction process of the data. As their background is different, there exist difficulties in the communication while assessing data and images. We provide a visualization of the thorax containing CT (Computer Tomography) and EIT images closing this gap. It is 3D, multimodal, semiabstract and suitable for both groups, and shows a rendered thorax volume with an embedded 2D EIT movie. The EIT image reconstruction contains several computational intermediate stages which are used to improve the volume rendering transfer function. Additionally, isosurfaces show context structures to understand spatial coherences more easily. The visualization is designed to be interactive and remove visual clutter to provide a direct view to the lung, which is the focus of interest. The results show that our visualization is able to give a basis for discussion for medical researchers as well as for computer scientists. Phenomena that have been discovered during long discussions are easier to detect. Furthermore it is possible to obtain new knowledge and address questions in terms of EIT.

3D Tele-Immersion (3DTI) has emerged as an efficient environment for virtual interactions and collaborations in a variety of fields like rehabilitation, education, gaming, etc. In 3DTI, geographically distributed users are captured using multiple cameras and immersed in a single virtual environment. The quality of experience depends on the available network bandwidth, quality of the 3D model generated and the time taken for rendering. In a collaborative environment, achieving high quality, high frame rate rendering by transmitting data to multiple sites having different bandwidth is challenging. In this paper we introduce a network adaptive textured mesh generation scheme to transmit varying quality data based on the available bandwidth. To reduce the volume of information transmitted, a visual quality based vertex selection approach is used to generate a sparse representation of the user. This sparse representation is then transmitted to the receiver side where a sweep-line based technique is used to generate a 3D mesh of the user. High visual quality is maintained by transmitting a high resolution texture image compressed using a lossy compression algorithm. In our studies users were unable to notice visual quality variations of the rendered 3D model even at 90% compression.

As a major component of volume rendering, the ray casting algorithm is memory-intensive. However, most existing texture-based volume rendering methods blindly map computational resources to texture memory and result in an incoherent access pattern, causing low cache hit rates in certain cases. The distance between samples taken by threads of the same scheduling unit (e.g. a warp of 32 threads in CUDA), of the GPU is a major factor that affects the texture cache hit rate. Based on this fact, we present a new sampling strategy, i.e. warp marching, which displays a novel computation-to-core mapping. In addition, a double buffer approach is introduced and special GPU operations are leveraged to improve the efficiency of parallel executions. To keep a roughly constant rendering performance when rotating the volume, we change our warp marching algorithm, so that samples can be taken along different directions of the volume. As a result, varying texture cache hit rates in different viewing directions are averaged out. Through a series of micro-benchmarking and real-life data experiments, we rigorously analyze our sampling strategies, and demonstrate significant performance enhancements over existing sampling methods.

mprovements in computer technology have spawned an exponential growth in both the scope and volume of data collection, as well as a corresponding shortage of capable analysts. This applies not just to scientists, but also to consumers who are gaining unprecedented access to data from their cars, homes, phones, and other devices. Meanwhile, visualization has emerged as an effective tool for exploring and gathering insight from large quantities of data. However, constructing effective visualizations is often difficult, and current tools often lack either the flexibility to extend to custom problem domains or else require low-level graphics programming expertise to generate even simple visualizations. Furthermore, most solutions are ad hoc, preventing users from transforming and evolving visualizations, instead forcing them into a rigid, linear workflow. One possible approach to solving these problems is through the definition of a domain-specific language (DSL). This approach offers a number of potential advantages, the most immediate being flexibility. A visualization DSL could support multiple levels of abstraction at once, each of which could be targeted at different user needs and expertise levels. This, in turn, could allow users with varying levels of expertise to make use of the abstraction layers they find most appropriate, and support the creation of simple and common visualizations without sacrificing the option for more detailed control when necessary. This layering could also allow implementation details to be hidden when desired. Pixel position information, for example, could be hidden behind a scalable and unitless environment which would allow the user to place and size visualization components in relation to one another.

The volume of the image data collected by optical satellites is increasing tremendously nowadays. In this paper, we present our recent research on the multi-graphics processing unit (multi-GPU) based near real-time preprocessing and releasing system (RPRS) of optical satellite images. RPRS consists of two sub-systems, namely, the image preprocessing sub-system and the image releasing sub-system. The image preprocessing sub-system ports the four image processors (i.e. relative radiometric correction, median filtering, modulation transfer function compensation and geometric correction) to the GPUs for execution with the compute unified device architecture (CUDA). Both the basic GPU implementation and three optimization measures are presented. To validate our strategy, an entire ZY-3 nadir image strip consisting of 80 images is used for experiment on the multi-GPU system that consists of four NVIDIA Testa M2050 GPUs. The results show that the efficiency of the processors is substantially accelerated by the use of GPU. The speedup ratios are between 10.94 and 44.89. Moreover, when using all the four GPUs, the processing of the entire image strip only costs 19 min 45 s, which could meet the near real-time preprocessing requirement. The image releasing system affords the direct visualization of the georeferenced images on the geographic base map of GeoGlobe, a Google Earth like 3D spatial information releasing platform developed by State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing, China. It is very convenient for the follow-up relevant applications.

Traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solvers are usually written for a single gridding paradigm such as structured-Cartesian, structured-body-fitted, or unstructured grids. Each type of mesh paradigms has inherent advantages and disadvantages. Thus, the methods of coupling multiple mesh paradigms have been developed to facilitate the use of different solvers in different part of the computational domain. However, the complex hybrid gridding paradigm poses challenges to rendering calculations for visualizing the data. This paper describes a volume visualization system for time-varying adaptive moving-body CFD datasets, where the grid system consists of unstructured grids near the body surface, coupled with Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement (SAMR) grid in the off-body domain. We present two approaches to the hybrid-grid volume ray casting: a KD-tree based single-pass algorithm, and a multi-pass algorithm using the depth peeling technique. The system has a three-level memory hierarchy: GPU memory, main memory, and a solid state drive (SSD). Through data caching and prefetching within the memory hierarchy, the latency of time-step swapping can be hidden. Experimental results show that our system allows interactive volume exploration on single-GPU commodity PCs.

In this paper, we propose a technique for rendering multiple irregular volumes using a stochastic approach. In this approach, we extend our stochastic projected tetrahedral (SPT) algorithm to treat irregular volumes. The SPT algorithm is a sorting-free volume rendering algorithm that projects a tetrahedral cell onto an image plane and controls the particle rendering using the opacity as the probability in the rasterization process. In the rasterization process, the particle depth is determined as that of a pre-defined location, which may be the front, back or middle point on a ray segment in the SPT algorithm. This determination causes a prominent artifact when treating multiple volumes, although it does not cause any problem when treating a single volume. The artifact occurs because the SPT algorithm controls the particle stochastically in the image plane but not in the depth direction. In the volume rendering process, it is assumed that the number of particles follows a Poisson distribution along the segment of the viewing ray that intersects the tetrahedral cell. The particle spacing follows the exponential distribution. In this case, we construct a cumulative distribution function of the particle spacing and develop a technique for calculating the nearest particle along the interval. We apply this technique to multiple volumes to confirm its effectiveness.
