Time-based analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) have recently gained attention because of their ability to reach high sample rates with good energy efficiency. The performance of most implementations is limited by the Voltage-to-Time Converter (VTC), hence necessitating thorough analysis on its performance. This paper derives expressions for the noise and linearity of a constant-slope VTC. The derived expressions provide an explicit link between the circuit parameters and VTC performance as well as offer insight on the available trade-offs. Based on the expressions, a general design methodology for constant-slope VTCs is proposed. The simulated verification with 28-nm CMOS shows good agreement with the presented analysis and with previously measured results, thereby corroborating the proposed design methodology. The presented design methodology allows the developed understanding between the VTC circuit parameters and performance metrics to be utilized in e.g. design exploration and algorithmic circuit optimization to find an optimal set of parameters for a given target specification.

The design of modern mechatronic systems involves multidisciplinary and high-level integration, creating challenging and complex tasks for industrial designers and engineers. Their development requires intricate interaction between heterogeneous subsystems, and necessitates coordinated trans-sectoral cooperation between mechanical, electronic, and software engineers. Although efforts have been made to create efficient methods to guide the design of mechatronic systems, no existing solutions solve the complexity of design problems experienced during their design. This article, therefore, proposes a structured step-by-step approach to guide the design of mechatronic systems using an object-oriented methodology. Three information streams are employed that flow through the logical layers of a mechatronic system to track requirements and define modular specifications during the design process. The proposed approach benefits those developing mechatronic systems by improving collaboration, minimizing errors, reducing chances of design failure, and helping meet the desired functionality and goal of multidisciplinary integration. To evaluate the proposed approach and demonstrate the practicability of the systematic framework, we present a case study of a library book returning system. Our results highlight the capability of the proposed approach to guarantee top-down consistency and traceability of derived specifications among logical layers and contribute to the successful integration of requirements during the design process of mechatronic systems.

This paper explores the application of radio frequency (RF) return loss measurements to estimate starch content in cassava, from the theoretical framework to the development of a portable test instrument utilising this method. The design evolution of the portable instrument for starch content estimation, employing RF reflectometry, is described, together with the calibration of the instrument against known starch content samples in the field. This design progression, from a basic hardware platform for proof of concept to versions with wireless connectivity, user interface enhancements, rechargeable batteries, and a focus on cost reduction and mass production suitability, has the potential to benefit farmers and further advancements in food quality assessment. Uploading of measured data from this instrument to the cloud, by means of a custom smartphone app, is also described.

We consider a hotplug coded caching systems in which some users are offline at the time of delivery. A placement delivery array (PDA) is a well-known tool for constructing a coded caching scheme for dedicated caches. In this paper, we introduce the concept of PDAs for hotplug coded caching schemes and refer to it as hotplug placement delivery array (HpPDA). We give an algorithm to describe the placement and the delivery phase of a hotplug coded caching scheme using HpPDA. We show that an existing hotplug coded caching scheme given in [Y. Ma and D. Tuninetti, "On coded caching systems with offline users," in 2022 ieee International symposium on information Theory (ISIT), 2022, pp. 1133-1138] corresponds to a class of HpPDAs, and then propose a method to further improve the rate of that scheme.

Cooperative control is concerned with engineeringsystems that can be characterized as a collection of decision making components called agents with locally sensed information and limited inter-component communication, all seeking to achieve a collective objective. Examples include mobile sensor networks, autonomous vehicle systems, distributed computation, and power systems. Areas of research that are related to cooperative control include multi-agent control, distributed systems, networked control, etc. Most of the results in cooperative control (such as synchronization) of MAS require some prior information of the communication topology, which means that control or synchronization might not be achieved when there is a change in the communication topology. In particular, scale fragility has shown that instability of the network often occurs when the number of agents grows large. In this paper, we focus on scalable synchronization of MAS in the presence of disturbances and measurement noise with known frequencies. We develop a scale-free collaborative protocol design for this class of MAS. The scalable exact output and regulated output synchronizations are developed for homogeneous MAS with non-introspective agents and heterogeneous MAS with introspective agents, respectively. The proposed protocol design methodology is solely based on agent models and does not need any information about the communication network or the number of agents. The results are illustrated in numerical examples with the random number of agents.

In these industries, systemsengineering is a proven approach to developing a program from conception through retirement. design thinking is a design methodology and separate from systemsengineering/ thinking;it is defined by its intensely human-centered approach. This report hypothesizes that design thinking processes used during the concept development phase of the systemsengineering process enables a more comprehensive view of key challenges due to the inclusion of more contextual stakeholder information, particularly in a government context. A mixed methods approach using 35 surveys and 11 interviews of subject matter experts, project managers, and innovation challenge participants was used to test the hypothesis. Interviewees disagreed on the impact that design thinking processes ultimately have on stakeholder information. There was a common consensus that the process yields key beneficiaries. The quantitative data showed a shift in familiarity with design thinking principles during the innovation challenge as a result of design thinking teaching modules. The increase in familiarity correlated with an increased likelihood to use various design thinking processes during concept development, and stronger agreement that design thinking affected understanding the stakeholders, key beneficiaries, and comprehension of the challenge space. Together, the qualitative and quantitative data agreement on the addition of key beneficiaries is evidence in support of design thinking processes affecting the context of stakeholder information. Embracing more contextual stakeholder information results in designers seeking a more comprehensive view of the challenge space.
