The author describes his experience with the design and implementation of two general-purpose imageprocessing workstations. The two workstations provide facilities for image acquisition, modification, and display;communications to and from host computers;and uploading and downloading of uncoded pictures, processed images, and programs. These workstations were successfully utilized in several different industrial vision projects, including automatic pattern alignment for semiconductor assembly in the areas of wire bonding, die bonding, and automated visual inspection. The author discusses a general software architecture, algorithmic architecture, and the menu selection provided in the general-purpose system.

In this paper, we introduce one method based on the use of two kinds of the point spread functions to achieve the high-resolution image in confocal fluorescence microscopy system. The high-resolution image without generating significant negative values is achieved by the new relationship between two obtained images. The proposed effectiveness to obtain high resolution image was shown by the simulation results. Moreover, the experimental result demonstrated that our way can be used to achieve higher resolution image in comparison with conventional confocal fluorescence microscopy.

As the global threat of terrorism continues to escalate, finding efficient ways to ensure the safety of the public is becoming a major concern for the authorities. This paper presents an investigation of scanning and detection of concealed weapons with possible applications in high risk areas like airports. Using a passive and non-intrusive scanning method like Infrared (IR) imaging, and combining it with a visualimage, we hope to devise a scheme which will be able to highlight sufficiently the presence of a concealed weapon but also protect the privacy of the person that is being scanned. As an initial phase of the investigation, this work is mainly based on various imageprocessing and computer vision techniques. They are including: image registration, image fusion and image segmentation. The experimental results are shown to be promising but there are some limitations in terms of hardware used, adopted techniques and implementations. Some improvements including using more advanced imaging sensor, employing feature based image registration and segmenting images using advanced clustering methods could be addressed. The work is useful for human operators to determine weapons and non-weapons with the minimum false detections.

In this paper we take a port-Hamiltonian approach to address the problem of image-based visual servo control of a pick and place system We realize a closed-loop system, including the nonlinear camera dynamics, which is port-Hamiltonian. Although the closed-loop system is nonlinear, the resulting controller is a PD-type controller which only requires the camera states. From the passivity property of port- Hamiltonian systems we then derive conditions for exponential stability of the closed-loop system, which are used to tune the PD controller gains.

This paper presents a novel technique for the depth estimation from the monocular outdoor images. This technique combines three major components: the camera projection model, object classifier, and dark channel modifier. The camera projection model estimates a reasonable relative depth by the camera parameters from the exchangeable image file format (EXIF). The object classifier categorizes objects into four types;sky, ground, man-made and natural objects, and then assigns initial depth to each object. Finally, the initial depth is further corrected by dark channel model. The experiments show our estimated depth map is close to the ground truth, as well as providing the satisfying stereo visual results.

There are many cases in which it is difficult to detect defects by visual inspection. These defects, such as very small cracks and thin stains, etc., are slight difference and hide in background texture. Even if a skilled inspector can detect these defects, they are undetectable by basic imageprocessing algorithms. This special ability of the inspectors is called "KIZUKI" in Japanese. This paper describes how to develop irregular region extraction programs based on human visual architectures. Two theories have been used to model the "defects pop-out = KIZUKI" process of visual inspection: the peripheral vision and the involuntary eye micro-vibration theories in the field of psychology of vision. We have implemented this model experimentally. It consists of two steps: forming low resolution images by variable re-sampling, and then detecting relatively salience regions at each low resolution image and integrating these regions. Experiment results indicate that our approach have been reasonable. Since our programs have been very simple and effective, it might be incorporable into different visual examination systems widely.

This paper focuses on enhancing the captions generated by image captioning systems. We propose an approach for improving caption generation systems by choosing the most closely related output to the image rather than the most likely output produced by the model. Our model revises the language generation output beam search from a visual context perspective. We employ a visual semantic measure in a word and sentence level manner to match the proper caption to the related information in the image. This approach can be applied to any caption system as a post-processing method.
