Program comprehension is crucial for software maintenance activities and is supported by reverse engineering techniques. Many of them analyze source code and use parsers to create higher-level representations of software si stems that are more meaningful to engineers. But the application of parsers is for some reasons not always desirable. In this paper we introduce Revealer a lightweight source model extraction tool that combines advantages of lexical analysis with syntactical analysis. It uses an easy-to-use pattern language that supports engineers in defining pattern definitions of diverse granularity depending on the problem at hand In this way our tool enables fast extraction of simple and complex code patterns that allow engineers a quick insight into particular architectural aspects that are expressed via source code patterns.

source code is often reused in software development. Although developers can avoid re-implementing features in existing products, doing so may result in a large number of similar software products. To understand the commonalities and variabilities of similar products, comparing their source code is critical. However, a product may change its own directory structure, even if the products share the same source code with other products. Hence, comparing source code among products in a systematic manner is difficult. In this paper, we propose a technique to extract and visualize a unified directory tree to compare the source code of similar products. This tree includes all directories of given products and merges corresponding directories into a single node. Since a node in a tree corresponds to multiple directories in products, developers can easily compare the contents of products. In our study, we implemented the visualization as a GUI tool. In addition, we conducted a case study using four Android products to demonstrate the tool's ability to assist developers in accessing the source code of multiple products.

The availability of large corpora of online software-related documents today presents an opportunity to use machine learning to improve integrated development environments by first automatically collecting code examples along with associated descriptions. Digital libraries of computer science research and education conference and journal articles can be a rich source for code examples that are used to motivate or explain particular concepts or issues. Because they are used as examples in an article, these code examples are accompanied by descriptions of their functionality, properties, or other associated information expressed in natural language text. Identifying code segments in these documents is relatively straightforward, thus this paper tackles the problem of extracting the natural language text that is associated with each code segment in an article. We present and evaluate a set of heuristics that address the challenges of the text often not being colocated with the code segment as in developer communications such as online forums.

Binary reverse engineering is used to understand and analyse programs for which the source code is unavailable. Decompilers can help, transforming opaque binaries into a more readable source code-like representation. Still, reverse engineering is difficult and costly, involving considering effort in labelling code with helpful summaries. While the automated summarisation of decompiled code can help reverse engineers understand and analyse binaries, current work mainly focuses on summarising source code, and no suitable dataset exists for this task. In this work, we extend large pre-trained language models of source code to summarise de-compiled binary functions. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of input and data properties on the performance of such models. Our approach consists of two main components;the data and the model. We first build CAPYBARA, a dataset of 214K decompiled function-documentation pairs across various compiler optimisations. We extend CAPYBARA further by removing identifiers, and deduplicating the data. Next, we fine-tune the codeT5 base model with CAPYBARA to create BinT5. BinT5 achieves the state-of-the-art BLEU-4 score of 60.83, 58.82 and, 44.21 for summarising source, decompiled, and obfuscated decompiled code, respectively. This indicates that these models can be extended to decompiled binaries successfully. Finally, we found that the performance of BinT5 is not heavily dependent on the dataset size and compiler optimisation level. We recommend future research to further investigate transferring knowledge when working with less expressive input formats such as stripped binaries.

In recent years, the use of automated source code generation utilizing transformer-based generative models has grown in popularity. These models can generate code according to the developers' requirements. However, recent research showed that these automatically generated source codes can contain vulnerabilities and other quality issues. Despite researchers' and practitioners' attempts to enhance code generation models, retraining and fine-Tuning large language models is not only time-consuming but also resource-intensive and costly. Thus, in this paper, we describe FRANC, a lightweight framework for recommending more secure and high-quality source code derived from transformer-based code generation models. FRANC includes a static filter to make the generated code compilable with heuristics and a quality-Aware ranker to sort the code snippets based on a quality score. Moreover, the framework uses prompt engineering to fix persistent quality issues. We evaluated FRANC with five Python and Java code generation models and six prompt datasets, including a newly created one in this work (FRANC). The static filter improves 9% to 46% Java suggestions and 10% to 43% Python suggestions regarding compilability. The average improvement over the NDCG@10 score for the ranking system is 0.0763, and the repairing techniques repair the highest 80% of prompts. FRANC takes, on average, 1.98 seconds for Java;for Python, it takes 0.08 seconds. © 2024 ieee.

Software visualizations are usually realized as standalone and isolated tools that use embedded code viewers within the visualization. In the context of program comprehension, only few approaches integrate visualizations into code editors, such as integrated development environments. This is surprising since professional developers consider reading source code as one of the most important ways to understand software, therefore spend a lot of time with code editors. In this paper, we introduce the design and proof-of-concept implementation for a software visualization approach that can be embedded into code editors. Our contribution differs from related work in that we use dynamic analysis of a software system's runtime behavior. Additionally, we incorporate distributed tracing. This enables developers to understand how, for example, the currently handled source code behaves as a fully deployed, distributed software system. Our visualization approach enhances common remote pair programming tools and is collaboratively usable by employing shared code cities. As a result, user interactions are synchronized between code editor and visualization, as well as broadcasted to collaborators. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach that combines code editors with collaboratively usable code cities. Therefore, we conducted a user study to collect first-time feedback regarding the perceived usefulness and perceived usability of our approach. We additionally collected logging information to provide more data regarding time spent in code cities that are embedded in code editors. Seven teams with two students each participated in that study. The results show that the majority of participants find our approach useful and would employ it for their own use. We provide each participant's video recording, raw results, and all steps to reproduce our experiment as supplementary package. Furthermore, a live demo of our tool is available online.1 We invite other researchers

We are happy to introduce you to this special issue that presents selected papers from the 15th ieee International working conference on source code analysis and manipulation (SCAM 2015). SCAM is a leading conference that brings together researchers and practitioners working on theory, techniques, and applications that concern analysis and/or manipulation of the source code of computer systems. While much attention in the wider software engineering community is properly directed towards other aspects of systems development and evolution, such as specification, design, and requirements engineering, it is the source code that contains the only precise description of the behavior of the system. The analysis and manipulation of source code thus remains a pressing concern. SCAM 2015 was held on September 27 to 28, 2015, in Bremen, Germany, together with 31st International conference on Software Maintenance and Evolution (ICSME).

Over the past decade, a number of tools and systems have been developed to manage various aspects of the software development lifecycle. Until now, tool supported code review, an important aspect of software development, has been largely ignored. With the advent of open source code review tools such as Gerrit along with projects that use them, code review data is now available for collection, analysis, and triangulation with other software development data. In this paper, we extract Android peer review data from Gerrit. We describe the Android peer review process, the reverse engineering of the Gerrit JSON API, our data mining and cleaning methodology, database schema, and provide an example of how the data can be used to answer an empirical software engineering question. The database is available for use by the research community.

Studies have demonstrated the importance of good identifier names to program comprehension. It is unclear, however, whether poor naming has other effects that might impact maintenance effort, e.g. on code quality. We evaluated the quality of identifier names in 8 established open source Java applications libraries, using a set of 12 identifier naming guidelines. We found statistically significant associations between flawed identifiers (i.e. violating at least one guideline) and code quality issues reported by FindBugs, a static analysis tool.

A source code difference (diff) indicates changes made by comparing new and old source codes, and it can be utilized in code reviews to help developers understand the changes made to the code. Although many diff generation methods have been proposed, existing automatic methods may generate nonoptimal diffs, hindering reviewers from understanding the changes. In this paper, we propose an interactive approach to optimize diffs. Users can provide feedback for the points of a diff that should not be matched but are or parts that should be matched but are not. The edit graph is updated based on this feedback, enabling users to obtain a more optimal diff. We simulated our proposed method by applying a search algorithm to empirically assess the number of feedback instances required and the amount of diff optimization resulting from the feedback to investigate the potential of this approach. The results of 23 GitHub projects confirm that 92% of nonoptimal diffs can be addressed with less than four feedback actions in the ideal case. © 2024 ieee.
