Software visualization approaches for code reviews are often implemented as standalone applications, which use static code analysis. The goal is to visualize the structural changes introduced by a pull / merge request to facilitate the review process. In this way, for example, structural changes that hinder code evolution can be more easily identified, but understanding the changed program behavior is still mainly done by reading the code. For software visualization to be successful in code review, tools must be provided that go beyond an alternative representation of code changes and integrate well into the developers' daily workflow. In this paper, we report on the novel and in-progress design and implementation of a web-based approach capable of combining static and dynamic analysis data in software city visualizations. Our architectural tool design incorporates modern web technologies such as the integration into common Git hosting services. As a result, code reviewers can explore how the modified software evolves and execute its use cases, which is especially helpful for distributed software systems. In this context, developers can be directly linked from the Git hosting service's issue tracking system to the corresponding software city visualization. This approach eliminates the recurring action of manual data collection and setup. We implement our design by extending the web-based software visualization tool ExplorViz. Typically, a conventional unit test (CUT) verifies the expected behavior of the unit under test through one specific input / output pair. In contrast, a parameterized unit test (PUT) receives a set of inputs as arguments, and contains assertions that are expected to hold true for all these inputs. PUTs increase test quality, as they assess correctness on a broad scope of inputs and behaviors. However, defining assertions over a set of inputs is a hard task for developers, which limits the adoption of PUTs in practice. In this paper, we address the problem of finding oracles for PUTs that hold over multiple inputs. We design a system called PROZE, that generates PUTs by identifying developer-written assertions that are valid for more than one test input. We implement our approach as a two-step methodology: first, at runtime, we collect inputs for a target method that is invoked within a CUT; next, we isolate the valid assertions of the CUT to be used within a PUT. We evaluate our approach against 5 real-world Java modules, and collect valid inputs for 128 target methods, from test and field executions. We generate 2,287 PUTs, which invoke the target methods with a significantly larger number of test inputs than the original CUTs. We execute the PUTs and find 217 that provably demonstrate that their oracles hold for a larger range of inputs than envisioned by the developers. From a testing theory perspective, our results show that developers express assertions within CUTs, which actually hold beyond one particular input.

The reverse engineering into CASE technology (RECAST) method takes the source code for an existing common business-oriented language (COBOL) system and derives a no-loss representation of the system documented in a structured systems analysis and design method (SSADM) format. This representation of the system is derived through the use of a series of transformations. The environment within which RECAST has been developed is described, the stages and steps of the RECAST method are outlined, and the use of software support tools is discussed. An overview is given of a case study that has been carried out for a live system.< >

In academia, plagiarism is a critical concern, and educators require effective tools to identify and prevent it. Presently, many plagiarism detection tools rely on source code comparison, which may not effectively counter the obfuscation techniques employed by students. This article presents an innovative solution to identifying potential plagiarism in programming assignments through the analysis of logs containing information on user actions during the programming process. The created tool adopts a history-based approach to plagiarism detection, which helps to counteract certain forms of obfuscation students use to conceal their plagiarism. The plagiarism detection tool analyses logs based on user-specific criteria such as run count, total time spent working, log file size, and pasted text ratio. The tool also compares log files for detection of duplicate files, identical texts pasted in different log files, source code pasted in different log files, and source code similarity. The solution also allows the user to specify the values for each analyzed metric for plagiarism detection. The effectiveness of the tool is demonstrated through experimental evaluations, enabling to identify cases of plagiarism that could not be detected with other available tools. The findings suggest that the tool can be an efficient and effective means for educators to identify plagiarism in programming assignments.

General-purpose large language models (LLMs) have become a versatile tool in software development and maintenance. These models offer support in tasks such as under-standing, writing, and summarizing code. While these LLMs can generate code quickly their use in software modeling is relatively under-explored. This research aims to study ChatGPT's ability to generate class diagrams from source code. To do this, we engineered a prompt that takes in source code to create a UML class diagram for that system. We used this prompt to create class diagrams for 40 systems and assessed the diagrams on their correctness and structure. Our results show that ChatGPT creates class diagrams that accurately capture 90% of the classes and their attributes and 66 % of the associations. While ChatGPT performed nearly flawlessly for smaller projects, the diagrams for larger projects had more issues. We conclude that ChatGPT is best utilized as a complementary tool rather than the sole resource for software modeling and maintenance.

Design patterns are employed in source code to solve commonly occurring programming tasks using understood best practices. Object-oriented design patterns usually span multiple classes and objects and play an integral role in the way object-oriented software is built. One challenge with using object-oriented design patterns is that over the life of a project, these patterns can undergo both planned and unplanned changes. Unplanned changes are often the result of bug fixes or code maintenance tasks that modify a design pattern as a side effect. Furthermore, these unplanned changes can result in increased brittleness of the code and can compromise the overall stability of the software. Over the lifetime of a software project, developers may only become aware of these unplanned changes when the code brittleness results in a software bug. To improve developers' understanding of object-oriented design pattern evolution, we introduce the design Pattern Instance Explorer (PIE) _ an exploratory visualization tool that enable developers to visualize a git repository's object-oriented design patterns and their life cycles. This paper reports on a study mining the exception stack traces included in 159,048 issues reported on Android projects hosted in GitHub (482 projects) and Google code (157 projects). The goal of this study is to investigate whether stack trace information can reveal bug hazards related to exception handling code that may lead to a decrease in application robustness. Overall 6,005 exception stack traces were extracted, and subjected to source code and byte code analysis. The out-comes of this study include the identification of the following bug hazards: (i) unexpected cross-type exception wrappings (for instance, trying to handle an instance of Out Of Memory Error "hidden" in a checked exception) which can make the exception-related code more complex and negatively impact the application robustness, (ii) undocumented runtime exceptions thrown by both the Android platform and third party libraries, and (iii) undocumented checked exceptions thrown by the Android Platform. Such undocumented exceptions make it difficult, and most of the times infeasible for the client code to protect against "unforeseen" situations that may happen while calling third-party code. This study provides further insights on such bug hazards and the robustness threats they impose to Android apps as well as to other systems based on the Java exception model.

Architecture level decisions, directly influenced by environmental factors, are crucial to preserve modularity and stability throughout software development life cycle. Tradeoffs of modularization alternatives, such as aspect oriented vs. object-oriented decompositions, thus need to be assessed from architecture models instead of source code. In this paper, we present a suite of architecture level metrics, taking external factors that drive software changes into consideration and measuring how well an architecture produces independently substitutable modules. We formalize these metrics using logical models to automate quantitative stability and modularity assessment. We evaluate the metrics using eight aspect oriented and object-oriented releases of a software product line architecture, driven by a series of heterogeneous changes. By contrasting with an implementation level analysis, we observe that these metrics can effectively reveal which modularization alternative generates more stable, modular design from high-level models.

Research into the working practices of software engineers has shown the need for integrated browsing and searching tools which include graphical visualisations linked back to the source code under investigation. In addition, for assembler maintenance and re-engineering there is an even greater need for sophisticated control flow analysis, data flow analysis, slicing and migration technology. All these technologies are provided by the FermaT Workbench: an industrial-strength assembler re-engineering workbench consisting of a number of integrated tools for program comprehension, migration and re-engineering. The various program analysis and migrations tools are based on research carried out over the last sixteen years at Durham University, De Montfort University and Software Migrations Ltd., and make extensive use of program transformation theory.

Opportunities for software reuse are plentiful, thanks in large part to the widespread adoption of open source processes and the availability of search engines for locating relevant artifacts. One challenge presented by open source software reuse is simply getting a newly downloaded artifact to build/run in the first place. The artifact itself likely reuses other artifacts, and so depends on their being located to function properly. While merely tedious in the individual case, this can cause serious difficulties for those seeking to study open source software. It is simply not feasible to manually resolve dependencies for thousands of projects, and many forms of analysis require declarative completeness. In this paper we present a method for automatically resolving dependencies for open source software. It works by cross-referencing a project's missing type information with a repository of candidate artifacts. We have implemented this method on top of the sourcerer, an infrastructure for the large-scale indexing and analysis of open source code. The performance of our resolution algorithm was evaluated in two parts. First, for a small number of popular open source projects, we manually examined the artifacts suggested by our system to determine if they were appropriate. Second, we applied the algorithm to the 13,241 projects in the sourcerer managed repository to evaluate the rate of resolution success. The results demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, as the algorithm located all of the required artifacts needed by 3,904 additional projects, increasing the percentage of declaratively complete projects in sourcerer from 39% to 69%.
