The mobile applications industry experiences an unprecedented high growth, developers working in this context face a fierce competition in acquiring and retaining users. They have to quickly implement new features and fix bugs, or risks losing their users to the competition. To achieve this goal they must closely monitor and analyze the user feedback they receive in form of reviews. However, successful apps can receive up to several thousands of reviews per day, manually analysing each of them is a time consuming task. To help developers deal with the large amount of available data, we manually analyzed the text of 1566 user reviews and defined a high and low level taxonomy containing mobile specific categories (e.g. performance, resources, battery, memory, etc.) highly relevant for developers during the planning of maintenance and evolution activities. Then we built the User Request Referencer (URR) prototype, using Machine Learning and Information Retrieval techniques, to automatically classify reviews according to our taxonomy and recommend for a particular review what are the source code files that need to be modified to handle the issue described in the user review. We evaluated our approach through an empirical study involving the reviews and code of 39 mobile applications. Our results show a high precision and recall of URR in organising reviews according to the defined taxonomy.

When software developers make changes to a program, it is possible that they will introduce faults into previously working parts of the code. As software grows, a regression test suite is run to ensure that the old functionality still works as expected. Yet, as the number of test cases increases, it becomes more expensive to execute the test suite. Reduction and prioritization techniques enable developers to manage large and unwieldy test suites. However, practitioners and researchers do not always use and study these methods due, in part, to a lack of availability. In response to this issue, this paper describes an already released open-source framework that supports both research and practice in regression testing. The sharing of this framework will enable the replication of empirical studies in regression testing and encourage faster industrial adoption of these useful, yet rarely used, techniques.

When software repositories are mined, two distinct sources of information are usually explored: the history log and snapshots of the system. Results of analyses derived from these two sources are biased by the frequency with which developers commit their changes. We argue that the usage of mainstream SCM systems influences the way that developers work. For example, since it is tedious to resolve conflicts due to parallel commits, developers tend to minimize conflicts by not contemporarily modifying the same file. This however defeats one of the purposes of such systems. We mine repositories created by our Syde tool, which records every change by every developer in multi-developer projects. This new source of information can augment the accuracy of analyses and breaks new ground in terms of how such information can assist developers. In this paper we illustrate how the information we mine can help to provide a refined notion of code ownership. As a case study, we analyze the developers' activities of the development of a commercial system.

Software engineers working in large projects must navigate complex information landscapes. Change Impact analysis (CIA) is a task that relies on engineers' successful information seeking in databases storing, e.g., source code, requirements, design descriptions, and test case specifications. Several previous approaches to support information seeking are task-specific, thus understanding engineers' seeking behavior in specific tasks is fundamental. We present an industrial case study on how engineers seek information in CIA, with a particular focus on traceability and development artifacts that are not source code. We show that engineers have different information seeking behavior, and that some do not consider traceability particularly useful when conducting CIA. Furthermore, we observe a tendency for engineers to prefer less rigid types of support rather than formal approaches, i.e., engineers value support that allows flexibility in how to practically conduct CIA. Finally, due to diverse information seeking behavior, we argue that future CIA support should embrace individual preferences to identify change impact by empowering several seeking alternatives, including searching, browsing, and tracing.

Video-conferencing applications are becoming increasingly popular, especially with the remote working trend after COVID-19. The benefits of meeting online cannot be denied; however, this is still quite limited. In particular, it is essential to monitor and analyze participants' behavior. In this paper, we proposed SunFA - an open-source participants analysis tool for video-conferencing based on face analysis and virtual camera technology. The advantage of our system is that it is compatible with almost available video conferencing applications, such as Google Meet, Skype, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Slack, etc. Furthermore, we packaged this software as a desktop application for Windows operating system to make it easy to install. The memory usage and execution time evaluation ensure the real-time and resource-saving of a video-conferencing application. Symbolic manipulation is an indispensable tool in control design and in system analysis. While numeric computational languages and algorithms have been exhaustively used, symbolic manipulation methods have been barely used at all. In this study, we developed a Maple language procedure to solve continuous Lapunov equations symbolically in conjunction with the Kronecker product. A Lyapunov continuous algebraic equation of the form A/sup T/P+PA+Q=0 was considered. The method is also applicable to time-variant and non-constant systems. Examples were incorporated to test the method over different order systems and results were compared with the published solutions of Gonzalez and Munro (1990, 1991). A thorough study of the system stability of a non-constant system matrix A is also introduced and analyzed. Maple source code procedures are presented and fully commented on.

Researchers continue to demonstrate the benefits of Mining Software Repositories (MSR) for supporting software development and research activities. However, as the mining process is time and resource intensive, they often create their own distributed platforms and use various optimizations to speed up and scale up their analysis. These platforms are project-specific, hard to reuse, and offer minimal debugging and deployment support. In this paper, we propose the use of MapReduce, a distributed computing platform, to support research in MSR. As a proof-of-concept, we migrate J-REX, an optimized evolutionary code extractor, to run on Hadoop, an open source implementation of MapReduce. Through a case study on the source control repositories of the Eclipse, BIRT and Datatools projects, we demonstrate that the migration effort to MapReduce is minimal and that the benefits are significant, as running time of the migrated J-REX is only 30% to 50% of the original J-REX's. This paper documents our experience with the migration, and highlights the benefits and challenges of the MapReduce framework in the MSR community.

We propose a tree visualization technique for comparison of structures and attributes across multiple hierarchies. Many software systems are structured hierarchically by design. For example, developers subdivide source code into libraries, modules, and functions. This design propagates to software configuration and business processes, rendering software hierarchies even more important. Often these structural elements are attributed with reference counts, code quality metrics, and the like. Throughout the entire software life cycle, these hierarchies are reviewed, integrated, debugged, and changed many times by different people so that the identity of a structural element and its attributes is not clearly traceable. We argue that pairwise comparison of similar trees is a tedious task due to the lack of overview, especially when applied to a large number of hierarchies. Therefore, we strive to visualize multiple similar trees as a whole by merging them into one supertree. To merge structures and combine attributes from different trees, we leverage the Jaccard similarity and solve a matching problem while keeping track of the origin of a structure element and its attributes. Our visualization approach allows users to inspect these supertrees using node-link diagrams and indented tree plots. The nodes in these plots depict aggregated attributes and, using word-sized line plots, detailed data. We demonstrate the usefulness of our method by exploring the evolution of software repositories and debugging data processing pipelines using provenance data.

In this paper, we propose a technique called LACT for automatically categorizing software systems in open-source repositories. LACT is based on latent Dirichlet Allocation, an information retrieval method which is used to index and analyze source code documents as mixtures of probabilistic topics. For an initial evaluation, we performed two studies. In the first study, LACT was compared against an existing tool, MUDABlue, for classifying 41 software systems written in C into problem domain categories. The results indicate that LACT can automatically produce meaningful category names and yield classification results comparable to MUDABlue. In the second study, we applied LACT to 43 software systems written in different programming languages such as C/C++, Java, C#, PHP, and Perl. The results indicate that LACT can be used effectively for the automatic categorization of software systems regardless of the underlying programming language or paradigm. Moreover, both studies indicate that LACT can identify several new categories that are based on libraries, architectures, or programming languages, which is a promising improvement as compared to manual categorization and existing techniques.

code review is an activity where developers receive feedback on their code contributions from other developers. The frequent and potentially negative feedback developers receive makes code review prone to interpersonal conflicts. There is a consensus about such behavior being anti-social and leading to negative outcomes for the code, team, project, and even the company. However, these conflicts are a naturally occurring phenomenon that can lead to reaping the benefits of code review if managed well. Interpersonal conflicts in code review are not necessarily an issue to avoid, but rather to be managed. In this study, we survey developers in two companies - Adnovum - working predominantly on closed-source projects - and in Red Hat open source projects. Based on a set of 154 respondents, we have found that 77% of developers sometimes experience inter-personal conflicts in code review, even though mostly not very frequently. These conflicts pose some degree of a problem to 64% of developers. However, developers are rather successful in deriving constructive outcomes in the face of conflicts - 24% of developers report that conflicts have more positive than negative outcomes. While they are highly successful in deriving positive outcomes for code quality and maintainability, the motivation of developers and their communication and collaboration in a team has the most potential to be harmed by conflicts. The most effective strategy to have constructive rather than destructive conflicts is managing work effort and re-assigning tasks in the team to reduce stress in review.
