Adaptable Class-Specific Representation (ACSR) has previously been used as a solution to the problem of segmentation near edges in 2D colour images. Sampling windows of fixed shape used in many segmentation approaches cause misrepresentation of texture classes. ACSR greatly reduces this problem, based on simple templates resulting in accurate semi-automatic segmentation. The price of accuracy in ACSR is high processing overhead. We introduce an initial segmentation step using a faster fixed-shape window sampling and Learning Vector Quantization, and apply ACSR only at edge point Processing speed is significantly increased without compromising segmentation accuracy. ACSR segmentation is particularly interesting for medical applications where correct shape and size is important We extend the ACSR framework to true 3D volume segmentation. 3D information is used for classification at all sampling points, producing better results than per slice pseudo-3D segmentation. Colour volumes based on the visible Human Project ave used to demonstrate the approach. We conclude that ACSR can produce accurate segmentation in colour 2D images and 3D volumes, and that partial ACSR can significantly reduce processing overhead without losing segmentation quality.

We describe a practical method for measuring eye movements during psychological tests. This is an important class of applications including clinical evaluations and marketing studies. Existing methods in common use for psychological measurement, for example infrared reflection methods, are invasive involving head stabilization and special purpose lighting. In our experiments, we need to observe subjects for long periods, on the order of one hour. In addition, subjects must verbalize, which makes it difficult to stabilize their heads relative to the camera. We track the head using a lightweight spectacle framework worn by the subject. It has a set of easily visible colored balls. We segment each image into four characteristic colors, corresponding to in's, yellow ball, red ball, and background, which are obtained by sampling the images for each subject. The classification into colors is done by training a simple neural network for each characteristic color. We match a template to color-reduced image regions to find the balls and the two irises. We use a model-based object pose method, which uses a prior measurement of the relative positions of the balls, to calculate the spectacle framework pose (the head pose). A linear method is used for calibrating gaze position against head pose and in's positions. The subject's gaze position can be tracked reliably for periods of more than an hour. The locations of image features are found with an accuracy of approximately one pixel of the image. In a 640x480 image of the whole face, the eyes are each about 80 pixels across. This gives a corresponding accuracy of calculated eye gaze position on a lr inch monitor of about 1cm horizontally and 2cm vertically. This method has shown itself in practice to be very flexible for psychological measurement, giving sufficient accuracy and being noninvasive.

Surface analysis is important for automatic terrain cartography and for airborne navigation. This paper proposes a new approach to shape-from-shading (SFS) in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The SFS problem is embedded in a Bayesian framework. We maximize the surface orientation probability using SAR image statistics, local smoothing and constraints imposed by object discontinuities. We model the statistics of the SAR image distribution as a product between the Rayleigh and Bessel functions. We derive the optimal edge detector for this distribution. The resulting edges are classified as ridges and ravines according to a statistical test. Afterwards, the edges are used as constraints in the estimation of the surface normals. We propose various smoothing algorithms for the vector field of surface normals using robust statistics and surface curvature consistency. The results provided by these algorithms are compared with those given by local averaging.

An algorithm of cancer recognition in ultrasound images is developed in this paper. In order for cancer to survive it develops its own blood supply system, which is different than the supply system of normal tissue. The velocity of the blood flowing through the cancerous blood vessels is different than the velocity of the blood flowing through blood vessels of normal tissue. Due to this fact the ultrasound signal is absorbed differently in the cancerous areas than in the normal tissue areas. The energy of the signal, the continuity of the signal, the autocorrelation function and frequency domain properties are different in the normal tissue than in cancerous tissue. All of these indicators are weighted here for the purpose of classifying the image of the tissue as being cancerous or non-cancerous. Preliminary results based on limited number of ultrasound images show that our method has the ability to recognize cancer in ultrasound images.

In this paper we present a novel approach to estimate and analyze 3D fluid structure and motion of clouds from multi-spectrum 2D cloud image sequences. Accurate cloud-top structure and motion are very important for a host of meteorological and climate applications. However, due to the extremely complex nature of cloud fluid motion, classical nonrigid motion analysis methods will be insufficient to solve this particular problem. In this paper, two spectra of satellite cloud images are utilized. The high-resolution visible channel is first used to perform cloud tracking by using a recursive algorithm which integrates local motion analysis with a set of global fluid constraints, defined according to the physical fluid dynamics. Then, the infrared channel (thermodynamic information) is incorporated to postprocess the cloud tracking results in order to capture the cloud density variations and small details of cloud fluidity. Experimental results on GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) cloud image sequences are presented in order to validate and evaluate both the effectiveness and robustness of our algorithm.
