Interactive software demonstrations and computer-based exercises are often applied in signalprocessing education to examine concepts such as complex numbers, signal representation, sampling theory, and digital filter specification. While engineering software development environments such as National Instruments LabVIEW simplify the creation of such software, it's clear that some do a better job of improving understanding, motivating learners, and connecting theory with practical concerns. This paper explores how design choices that consider the interactive experience of the learner can have a clear role in determining the success for a demo in meeting these goals. We examine several demonstrations created by the authors, considering the development process and looking at some of the design and implementation choices intended to enhance learning.

Student naive reasonings in an undergraduate engineering course, signals and systems, were investigated in order to provide the groundwork for designing effective instructional material. Students majoring in aerospace engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were interviewed to probe their reasoning about different signals and systems topics, particularly in their analysis of continuous-time, linear, time-invariant systems using the fundamental properties of LTI systems and linear systems tools. In this paper, we present central naive reasonings that were identified related to the concepts of linearity, time-invariance, and convolution. We then discuss how these findings support instructors in designing effective instructional materials for signals and systems, such as concept questions for use in interactive lectures, guides for recitation sessions targeted to address student conceptual problems, and exam questions that accurately diagnose student conceptual problems.

Item response theory was used to analyze version 3 of the continuous-time signals and systems concept inventory with a pool of 1276 students at 7 schools. The resulting estimates of question difficulty and student ability provide important data used to evaluate the design of the exam and prepare for the upcoming revision to version 4 of the inventory.

Sine is one of the fundamental mathematic functions which are widely used in a number of application fields. In particular, signalprocessing and telecommunications need to calculate sine and cosine of numerical values for several different purposes. One of the challenges which affected the implementation of sine calculation in digital signalprocessing (DSP) has been the method used to calculate it by means of rational functions, which would allow the implementation of sine calculation in a digital computer system. One possibility is to exploit the Taylor polynomials, even though their main drawback consists of a relatively high grade (thus computational load) already for relatively low-precision approximations. This paper proposes a variable-precision method that allows approximating sine and cosine functions with Taylor polynomials while significantly reducing the computational load required. Our analysis shows how using our method it is possible to achieve the same accuracy marked by other approximation methods, at a lower computational cost.

Faculty members from Georgia Tech's School of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) have worked jointly with engineers from National Instruments to develop a new freshman course. This course, entitled 'Introduction to ECE design,' is constructed around the LEGO Mindstorms NXT robotics kit. This course addresses the diverse objectives of providing students with a systems-level design experience at the *** of their academic programs and introducing them to a broad range of ECE disciplines. A primary goal is to enable students to make better-informed decisions when choosing whether or not to major in electrical engineering or computer engineering.

We propose a power management method using a digital voice activity detection (VAD) module for intelligent ubiquitous sensor systems. When this VAD module detects a speech signal, a main signalprocessing circuit is connected to a power source. When no speech signal is detected, most circuits except VAD are blocked off, thereby reducing stand-by power for the specialized sensor nodes used for speech signalprocessing. We implemented the VAD algorithm, using zero crossing of input signals to an FPGA, thereby achieving 2.10 mW operation. We synthesized this VAD module using CMOS 0.18-mum process, achieving 3.49 muW power consumption for operation at 1.8 V and 100 kHz.
