This paper describes methods for the rapid design and VLSI implementation of two key components (the adaptive filter and Viterbi decoder) of the class-IV partial response maximum likelihood channel (PR-IV). These are implemented using parameterized modules, constructed from a synthesizable silicon architecture library containing core DSP and arithmetic functions. design studies, based on a 0.35 micron 3.3 V standard cell CMOS process, indicate that worst case sampling rates of 180 mega-samples per second are achievable with a power consumption of 0.8 W and an area of 4.3 mm/sup 2/. Higher sampling rates can be obtained by operating a number of filter modules in parallel. This approach offers power saving advantages when compared with systems employing pipelined filters operating at the same speed.

To date, many vibration-based sensing modalities have relied upon monitoring small shifts in the natural frequency of a system to detect structural changes (e.g., in mass or stiffness), which are attributable to the chemical or biological species, or other phenomena, that are being measured. Often, this approach carries significant signalprocessing expense due to the presence of electronics, such as precision phase-locked loops, when high sensitivities are required. Bifurcation-based sensing modalities, in contrast, can produce large easy to detect changes in response amplitude with high sensitivity to structural change if applied appropriately. This paper demonstrates the design and implementation of a tunable, Duffing-like electronic resonator realized via nonlinear feedback electronics, which uses a quartz crystal tuning fork as the device platform. The system in this manifestation uses collocated sensing and actuation, along with readily available electronic components, to realize the desired behavior. The sensitivity of the device is tunable via the control of feedback gain and the type of Duffing-like response (hardening or softening) is also selectable, thus creating a versatile bifurcation-based sensing platform. Wireless sensor nodes (WSNs) have recently evolved to include a fair amount of computational power, so that advanced signalprocessing algorithms can now be embedded even in these extremely low-power platforms. An increasingly successful field of application of WSNs is tele-healthcare, which enables continuous monitoring of subjects, even outside a medical environment. In particular, the design of solutions for automated and remote electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis has attracted considerable research interest in recent years, and different algorithms for delineation of normal and pathological heart rhythms have been proposed. In this paper, some of the most promising techniques for filtering and delineation of ECG signals are explored and comparatively evaluated, describing their implementation on the state-of-the-art IcyHeart WSN. The goal of this paper is to explore the trade-offs implied in the different settings and the impact of design choices for implementing "smart" WSNs dedicated to monitoring ECG bio-signals.
