We develop an information theoretic waveform design algorithm for target tracking in the presence of multipath. We employ a co-located multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar configuration using wideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signalling scheme. Apart from the frequency diversity provided by OFDM, we also exploit polarization to resolve the multipath signals by using polarization-sensitive transceivers. Thus, we can track the scattering coefficients of the target at different frequencies along with its position and velocity. We apply a sequential Monte Carlo method (particle filter) to track the target, while integrating an optimal waveform design technique based on mutual information criterion. Our numerical examples demonstrate the achieved performance improvement due to the adaptive waveform design.

This paper deals with and details the design of a power-aware adaptive digital image rejection receiver based on blind-source-separation that alleviates the RF analog front-end impairments. Power-aware system design at the RTL level without having to redesign arithmetic circuits is used to reduce the power consumption in nomadic devices. Power-aware multipliers with configurable precision are used to trade-off the image-rejection-ratio (IRR) performance with power consumption. Results of the simulation case studies demonstrate that the IRR performance of the power-aware system is comparable to that of the normal implementation albeit degraded slightly, but well within the acceptable limits.

We analyze the effect of node mobility on the convergence time of pairwise gossip algorithms. We use a simple mobility model and illustrate how to transform a gossip with mobile agents into gossip in a static network with a nonuniform distribution on selecting neighbors. We describe two methods for analyzing Markov chain convergence that can be used to derive upper and lower bounds on the convergence time of the network. Several examples are given to show the usefulness of these methods.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are called to play a crucial role in fourth Generation (4G) wireless systems to provide advanced data services. This paper addresses the design and implementation of a MIMO encoder that is based on Alamouti scheme on a Xilinxreg Virtextrade-4 XC4VLX60 Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) device. This encoder is a part of MIMO testbed, equipped with multiple antennas at both ends of the link which appropriately encodes the modulated symbols to achieve both time and spatial diversity. In this paper, a comprehensive explanation of the complete design process is provided, including an illustration of the tools used in its development. The encoder for the MIMO testbed is developed based on modular design which simplifies system design, eases hardware update and facilitates testing the various modules in an independent manner.

A list sphere detector (LSD) is an enhancement of a sphere detector (SD) that can be used to approximate the optimal MAP detector. In this paper, we introduce a novel architecture for the increasing radius (IR)-LSD algorithm, which is based on the Dijkstra's algorithm. The parallelism possibilities are introduced in the presented architecture, which is also scalable for different multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The novel architecture is implemented on a Virtex-IV field programmable gate array (FPGA) chip using high-level ANSI C++ language based Catapult C Synthesis tool from Mentor Graphics. The used word lengths, the latency of the design, and the required resources are presented and analyzed for 4 times 4 MIMO system with 16- quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The detector implementation achieves a maximum throughput of 12.1Mbps at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Region-of-interest (ROI) can be applied in H.264 video encoder to enhance subjective quality and reduce computation complexity. For the aiming application of low cost hardware real-time encoder in videophone with faces as ROI, this paper proposes a face detection algorithm to detect each macroblock (MB) as one part of a face or not. This face detection algorithm has a unique estimation-and-verification process and can be combined with a H.264 encoder by MB level pipeline architecture. 97.91% MBs in faces can be detected. VLSI architecture of proposed face detection algorithm is designed and an area of 4.3 k gates is achieved. Power consumption is only 1.45 mW at 100 MHz. A ROI based H.264 encoder with dynamic parameters is proposed to enhance subjective quality and reduce the rate-distortion-optimization (RDO) complexity. The PSNR in ROI increases for 4.8 dB under similar bit rate. Encoding time is reduced to 54.4% in videophone-like sequences.

Videos are often used in e-learning contents. But learning pages consisting of texts and figures can be delivered in fast service, while learning pages including large video or sound files need a relatively longer service time to deliver learning contents. Accordingly in the present study, we aim to make it more independent of the operating systems, devices or browsers and enable interactions among learners. The convenience of learning is intended to be achieved by realizing e-learning contents, enabling self-initiated learning. To this end, in the present paper, a technique to synchronize multimedia e-learning contents, multimedia objects based on XML is proposed, and the e-learning contents of the proposed technique are developed with Flash, to support high-quality multimedia learning via synchronized data of images, sounds, videos, ect. on Web sites.

In this paper, we investigate the performance of a bit-interleaving diversity (BID) scheme for multiple packet transmissions over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) frequency-selective channel in the context of hybrid automatic repeat request protocols. We show under the maximum likelihood decoding rule that a BID scheme outperforms an identically interleaved transmit scheme. Moreover, we identify and characterize three types of diversity resulting from the BID scheme: modulation diversity, multiplexing diversity, and interference decorrelation resulting in an enhanced detection performance. By using a distance spectrum analysis, we evaluate their respective importance according to the used modulation and the transmission scenario. Some interleaving design rules are given in order to enhance further the overall transmission diversity. The receiver is implemented using a turbo-equalizer structure with packet combining based on separate linear equalization followed by joint decoding. Simulation results show the efficiency of the BID scheme for different transmission scenarios.

Because of size and cost constraints, small loudspeakers are used in many applications. It is very difficult to have a good low-frequency response in these small speakers. To produce good-sounding bass, we use psychoacoustic techniques to enhance deep bass in small loudspeakers-hence ldquoextendingrdquo the bandwidth of auditory signals. This system is implemented in the analog domain, demonstrating the efficient signal processing capability of low power analog circuits. The bass enhancement system is designed, programmed, and tested on a floating-gate based field programmable analog array (FPAA), a reconfigurable analog signal processor. Measurements from a working prototype are presented. We can transfer the analog system developed on the FPAA to custom IC designs, or use the FPAA as the final implementation platform.

Modern telepresence systems can deliver multimedia signals of unprecedentedly high quality of experience to the user. Setting and maintaining such services call for reliable and automatic tools for multimedia quality probing, in special those targeted at speech data along the transmission path. Most of the objective methods for sound quality assessment (QA) in the literature are intended for either speech signals of 4- to 8-kHz bandwidth or general audio until 24 kHz, but are not specifically designed for speech at high sampling-rates. This work approaches quality evaluation of full-band (24 kHz) high-quality speech corrupted by echo. A simple metric singled out from a standardized double-ended tool for audio QA is proposed as a solution for the problem at hand. Quality measures from a set of speech stimuli corrupted by echo under controlled conditions were obtained via listening tests to allow calibration and evaluation of the proposed method. Experimental results reveal an overall correlation of 0.94 between objective and subjective scores, even in the presence of moderate additive noise.
