The applicability of MPEG video coding can be improved by scaling the algorithmic complexity and resource usage to the desired application and device. This paper presents a new DCT computation technique of which the quality and amount of computations is maximized for a limited number of operations. For halved computing resources, about 2-4 SNR dB improvement was obtained when compared to a diagonally oriented computation of coefficients, matching with the conventional MPEG scanning.

With the development and characterization of biomarkers that may reflect neural network state as well as a patient's clinical deficits, there is growing interest in more complex stimulation designs. While current implantable neuromodulation systems offer pathways to expand the design and application of adaptive stimulation paradigms, technological drawbacks of these systems limit adaptive neuromodulation exploration. In this paper, we discuss the implementation of a phase-triggered stimulation paradigm using a research platform composed of an investigational system known as the CorTec Brain Interchange (CorTec GmbH, Freiburg, Germany), and an open-source software tool known as OMNI-BIC. We then evaluate the stimulation paradigm's performance in both benchtop and in vivo human demonstrations. Our findings indicate that the Brain Interchange and OMNI-BIC platform is capable of reliable administration of phase-triggered stimulation and has the potential to help expand investigation within the adaptive neuromodulation design space.

In recent years, the sport consciousness and environmental consciousness are increased so that cycling has become very popular around the world. The demand of people increases of performance of the bike and one of these is the electronic shifting system. This paper designs and implements a test system that can achieve synchronizing control data measurement, flywheel gear recognition and ramp simulation of the bike test platform. That can test the emulate the different road environment, such as upward slope or downhill, etc. An automatic image process is developed to test the electrical shifter. The quality of motors, shifting position, pedal pressure and the shifting time can be measured automatically by using a high-speed camera.

For multimedia applications, loop buffering is an efficient mechanism to reduce the power in the instruction memory of embedded processors. In particular, software controlled clustered loop buffers are potentially very energy efficient. However current compilers for VLIW do not fully exploit the potentials offered by such a clustered organization. This paper presents ITSE, Instruction Transfer and Storage Exploration, a methodology to minimize the instruction memory energy using a software controlled clustered loop buffer as a basis. Results for the MediaBench application suite show 61% reduction (on average) in energy in the instruction memory hierarchy as compared to traditional, existing non-clustered approaches to the loop buffer without compromising performance

Real-time simulation enables the understanding of system operating conditions by evaluating simulation models of physical components running synchronized at the real-time wall clock. Leveraging the real-time measurements of comprehensive system models, faster than real-time (FTRT) simulation allows the evaluation of system architectures at speeds faster than real-time. FTRT simulation can assist in predicting the system's behavior efficiently, thus assisting the operation of system processes. Namely, the provided acceleration can be used for improving system scheduling, assessing system vulnerabilities, and predicting system disruptions in real-time systems. The acceleration of simulation times can be achieved by utilizing digital real-time simulators (RTS) and high-performance computing (HPC) architectures. FTRT simulation has been widely used, among others, for the operation, design, and investigation of power system events, building emergency management plans, wildfire prediction, etc. In this paper, we reviewthe existing literature on FTRT simulation and its applications in different disciplines, with a particular focus on power systems. We present existing system modeling approaches, simulation tools and computing frameworks, and stress the importance of FTRT accuracy.

Hardware implementation of lattice decoding algorithms becomes a challenging task as the complexity of MIMO systems increases. This paper presents the design and implementation of a Schnorr-Euchner strategy based lattice decoder using an FPGA. This lattice decoding algorithm has high data dependency during the iterative closest lattice point search procedures. The parallelism of the algorithm is explored and efficient hardware architectures are developed with the decoding function on FPGA and the data preprocessing on DSP. The system prototype of the decoder shows that it supports 2.7 Mbits/s data rate on a Virtex2-1000 FPGA, and is about 4 times faster than a DSP-based lattice decoder. The bit error rate (BER) performance is also tested and verified with software simulation.
