In this paper we introduce novel radio-frequency-photonic (RF-photonic) components, such as advanced electro-optic modulators (EOMs) and high-power photodetectors (PDs), and their application to advanced phased array systems. In addition, by strongly leveraging the microelectronics manufacturing industry, chip-scale optical systems have been implemented using photonic integrated circuits (PICs), which enable a profound reduction in size, weight, and power (SWaP). Such advances are destined to have a significant impact on the development, application, and commercialization of next generation phased array systems, particularly for phased array transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) antennas that provide ultra-wideband operation with time-of-flight full beamspace processing, with near unlimited beam bandwidth products (BBP). Accordingly, this paper presents phased array systems that performs massive beamspace processing in such a way as to render a realtime image of the passive RF environment. On the active signal side, a similar phased array system has demonstrated simultaneous, broadband multi-beam, multi-band, and multi-data processing. These systems have achieved upwards of a BBP of over 10 THz.

A 4×4 L-band dual-polarized differential-fed patch antenna array with full digital beamforming using radio frequency system-on-chip (RFSoC) is presented. Each of the 16 dual-polarized antenna units has good impedance matching from 1.2 to 1.3 GHz with an isolation larger than 30 dB. The array performance is first validated using analog beamforming at boresight using a 1:16 power divider. The measured realized gain is more than 16.8 dBi within the 1.2 to 1.3 GHz bandwidth. Subsequently, the array is combined with the ZCU216 RFSoC and full digital beamforming for both transmit and receive is demonstrated with independent beamforming capability for each polarization.

In this paper, we present a unique 2D high resolution, compact, low-cost, lightweight, and highly accurate millimeter-wave imagery system capable of operating in all weather conditions. We explain different aspects of the imagery system in detail and describe the process of millimeter-wave image formation thoroughly. To create the array, we utilize the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) concept. The imagery system presented in this paper, can strongly compete with the Lidar systems as the resolution limit is at the same level. Furthermore, in contrast to the Lidar systems, our imagery system can operate in heavy rain as well as dense fog and produce high quality images. Finally, we utilize our wide-band custom-made Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar, which operates at W-band with 33 GHz bandwidth, for data collection and present the results.

In this paper, we investigate the problem of transmit beamforming design for massive multiple-input multiple-output integrated sensing and communications (MIMO-ISAC) systems, through sensing energy maximization. Most of existing methods for transmit beamforming design suffer from high computational complexity in massive MIMO systems, prompting us to develop implementation-friendly designs. Specifically, we employ a structured beamformer composed of the communication precoder and sensing beamformer to simplify the design. The corresponding problem is formulated as maximizing the radar sensing performance in terms of the energy radiated towards the target to ensure sufficient echo from the target, while guaranteeing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for each communication user. In particular, we present two designs with different but affordable complexities based on the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) and statistical CSI, and derive the solutions to them. Numerical examples are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed beamforming designs.

Recently, radar-based detection and tracking at millimeter-wave frequencies have become increasingly popular. However, the performance of the radar systems operating at millimeter-wave frequencies has been mainly limited to short ranges which makes them unsuitable for many practical applications. In this paper, long range detection and tracking for multiple targets at millimeter-wave frequencies is presented based on our custom-made Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) radar system. The structure of the radar and the innovation in the digital signalprocessing unit will make it possible to perform detection and tracking for targets at far ranges. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first millimeter-wave system which is capable of detecting and tracking human at 600 m radial distance from the radar system. We present a complete statistical analysis of the combined land clutter and the noise of the system. This paves the way for the implementation of the Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) algorithm to detect the desired targets. Following the detection block the multi-target tracking is performed. The tracking unit is implemented based on the Kalman filtering and constant velocity motion model while the data association is based on the state-of-the-art Joint Probabilistic Data Association Filter (JPDAF). The algorithms have been implemented using the C programming language, and fully real-time processing has been achieved. The results presented in the paper are based on the experimental data gathered from realistic scenarios which demonstrate the capability of the radar system, which operates at 24 GHz, as well as the algorithms,
