Antenna array pattern synthesis deals with choosing the complex weights of an antenna array in order to satisfy a set of specifications or to say if such a set is feasible. It appears that these problems can often be expressed as convex optimization problems which can be solved numerically with algorithms such as interior point methods. This paper extends the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to cover those scenarios in which the input signal is unknown and quadratic processing is required to estimate and track some parameters of interest. The optimal quadratic tracker is found to incorporate the fourth-order statistical knowledge about the excitation signal. To illustrate these conclusions, we have studied the problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) tracking of digitally-modulated signals. Simulations have reflected the advantage of considering this information in terms of acquisition and steady-state performance.

This paper derives the Haar measure over the set of unitary matrices. The Haar measure is essential when studying the statistical behavior of complex sample covariance matrices in terms of their eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The characterization is based on Murnaghans parameterization of unitary matrices which can be seen as a generalization of the representation of orthogonal matrices using Givens rotations. In addition to deriving the Haar measure, an efficient method to obtain samples from it is also presented.

Subspace estimation is of importance to high-resolution direction estimation in arrayprocessing. In this paper, a new recursive least-squares (RLS) algorithm is proposed for null space estimation, which is used to estimate or track the directions of coherent and/or incoherent signals impinging on a uniform linear array (ULA). Especially by investigating the expectation computation of an inverse matrix, the statistical analysis of the RLS algorithm is studied in the mean and mean-squares senses in stationary environment, and further the mean-square-error (MSE) and mean-square derivation (MSD) learning curves are derived explicitly. The theoretical analyses and effectiveness of the proposed RLS algorithm are substantiated through numerical examples.
