We present a communication architecture that uses a distributed active real-time database system as its communication medium. The proposed architecture incorporates a database as the shared "whiteboard" through which every participating node may communicate by writing and reading data. This approach is useful in complex sharing applications such as distributed. real-time simulations. The architecture deals with performance problems inherited from databases and distribution by using eventual consistency to increase predictability and availability of local data access. As a filtering mechanism, active functionality is used to control complexity. This whiteboard communication architecture is suitable for distributed real-time simulations, and a single-node prototype implementation of such a database in conjunction with the distributed simulation standard high Level architecture (HLA) has shown encouraging results. The prototype. is being extended to multi-node simulation to gain additional experience before the communication architecture is deployed to actual systems.

Clusters of workstations are being extensively used for solving computationally intensive scientific problems. However, there is limited support for Quality of Service (QoS) based distributed computing on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) clusters. This limitation has restricted successful deployment of distributed real-time high-performance computing applications to customized and dedicated embedded multi-processor systems. This paper describes research work that attempts to provide a cluster platform that can guarantee access to computational and communication resources to distributed applications. The authors have developed PromisQoS, an architecture that supports execution of hard real-time distributed applications on a Linux cluster while providing high-throughput and low-latency communication using Myrinet. PromisQoS consists of the following major components -- Hare, BDM-RT and Turtle. Hare is a prototype implementation of time-based QoS channels specified by the Real-Time Message Passing Interface (MPI/RT 1.1) standard. BDM-RT is a low-level messaging library on Myrinet that provides deterministic communication latency and bandwidth on Myrinet. Turtle, a variant of RT-Linux, is the real-time operating system that provides guaranteed computation time. This work demonstrates that it is possible to deploy hard real-time distributed applications on COTS clusters and underlines the significance of the MPI/RT API in the realm of distributed high-performance computing applications that require QoS.

GAMMA (the Genoa Active Message MAchine) is a lightweight messaging system for Fast and Gigabit Ethernet. It is based on an Active Message-like paradigm and provides a performing, cost-effective alternative to proprietary high-speed networks, e. g. Myrinet, with the combination of low end-to-end latency and high throughput. GAMMA supports the important class of MPI based-parallel applications via the MPI/GAMMA interface [51, but up to now support for the also important class of socket based cluster applications is still missing. This paper describes two different approaches to how the socket interface can be adapted to GAMMA: The first is transparent for both application and GAMMA layer, the second is only transparent for the application. First performance results with the so-called GAMMAsockets are given. They show that the second approach performs almost as good as native GAMMA communication.

This paper explores a novel approach to classifying, enabling and measuring testbench reuse. Six levels of testbench reusability are presented ranging from utility (lowest), to communication, transactor, generate/check, configuration and tests (highest). The layers provide a template for implementation and enable reuse on a layer-by-layer basis. A qualitative measure of reuse is available directly from the layered model while a quantitative measure is available by examining the effort required to build the layers.

This paper proposes a high speed OFDM modem architecture for powerline communications. The proposed modem using the symmetric communication is designed to be compatible with the HomePlug standard. The HomePlug standard adopts from DC to 25MHz frequency bandwidth, 128 subcarriers for OFDM transmission, and BPSK, DBPSK, and DQPSK modulations for each subcarrier. In particular, this paper proposes algorithms and the associated architectures for the signal detection, AGC and frame synchronization. The AGC and frame synchronization algorithms are based on the symbol power ratio and the sliding cross-correlation of preamble, respectively. The frame is then synchronized with a position of the minimum correlation value. In addition, an area-efficient integrate-and-dump architecture for frame synchronization is proposed. The proposed architectures have been validated using SPW(TM) and implemented with Verilog-XL. We show that the BER performance of the proposed modem under an AWGN channel is similar to the theoretical one.

Turbo-codes have become an attractive forward error correction scheme as well for wired as for wireless communication systems. They achieve quasi-optimal coding gain, enabling reliable transmission on very noisy channels. Among the different existing turbo-coding schemes, Block Turbo-Codes (BTC) present excellent performances when their constitutive codes are decoded with the Fang-Buda Algorithm (FBA). Their bit error rate (BER) performance does not present any significant error floor down to 10(-9). However, the complexity of the FBA is such that currently available block turbo-decoders, even if they achieve throughput up to 155 Mbps, can only handle very simple codes, which do not reveal totally the power of BTC. In order to enable high performing BTC without sacrificing throughput or energy, we have systematically analyzed and optimized the FBA algorithm, applying a Data Transfer and Storage Exploration methodology. We describe in this paper the algorithm transformation steps and detail the resulting architecture. The latter, when mapped in a typical .18mum CMOS technology and clocked at 200 MHz enables high performing block turbo-decoding with throughput ranging from 30 Mbps to 120 Mbps. The memory power consumption, which is dominant for such a data-dominated application, has been estimated to be 480 mW while the memory area estimation led to 3.5 mm(2) per FBA module in the BTC pipeline.

Data servers for multimedia applications like News-on-Demand represent a severe bottleneck, because a potentially very, high number of users concurrently retrieve data with high data rates. In the Intermediate Storage Node Concept (INSTANCE) project, we develop a new architecture for Media-on-Demand servers that maximizes the number of concurrent clients a single server can support. Traditional bottlenecks, like copy operations, multiple copies of the same data element in main memory, and checksum calculation in communication protocols arc avoided by applying three orthogonal techniques: network level framing (NLF), zero-copy-one-copy, memory architecture, and integrated error management. In this paper, we describe how to minimize the transport level protocol processing Using NLF In particular we look at how NLF is implemented, and we present performance measurements indicating a large performance gain. The protocol execution is minimized to about 450 cycles per packet regardless of packet size, i.e., a reduction of about 87 % compared to I KB packets and more using larger packets. Consequently, the total server-side processing overhead is decreased by at least 50 %.

The flexibility and the wide deployment of IP technologies have driven the development of IP-based solutions for wireless networks, like IPbased Radio Access Networks (RAN). These networks have different characteristics when compared to traditional IP networks, imposing very strict requirements on Quality of Service (QoS) solutions, such as fast dynamic resource reservation, simplicity, scalability, low cost, severe congestion handling and easy implementation. A new QoS framework, called Resource Management in Differentiated Services (RMD), aims to satisfy these requirements. RMD has been introduced in recent publications. It extends the IETF Differentiated Services (Diffserv) architecture with new admission control and resource reservation concepts in a scalable way. This paper gives an overview of the RMD functionality and its performance behavior. Furthermore, it shows that the mean processing delay of RMD signaling reservation messages is more than 1330 times smaller then the mean processing delay of RSVP signaling reservation messages. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.
