In this paper we provide a comprehensive methodology for the specification and design of broadband multiatedia telecommunication services with IN capabilities. Initially the key concepts of an integrated IN / B-ISDN architecture are presented aiming at the provision of novel multirnedia features such as the coordination of different calls in a session as well as call / connection separation. The paper proposes alternative ways of producing IN service models from the prose description of the services. Consequently we examine the available options for distributing service logic in the various network nodes followed by a discussion on service data tables and the specification of rnessage flows across interfaces. Finally a mapping from a formal service specification in SDL towards a an actual service design is provided by means of a Service Creation and Simulation Environment. Throughout the paper two services are used for providing practical examples of the proposed methodology-a Video on Demand (VoD) service which is a true IN service and a Broadband Video Conference Service (B-VC) which is based on an existing implementation originally targeted for a TCP IP network platform. © 1997 ieee.

The prohibitive cost of dedicated fiber local loops for residential customers led to the development of passive optical networks (PONs) for access to broadband services. However the passive splitting of optical signals which gives flexibility, low cost and robustness creates a broadcast physical topology compromising customer privacy. Encryption is the only cost-effective way to prohibit global reception and create the required point-To point logical links restoring confidentiality to the desirable degree. Because of the very high speed of such networks, only solutions amenable to hardware implementations are acceptable. ATM cells are allocated to the system users on a time division basis each encrypted with a different key. A suitable for the PON environment encryption solution based on the summation generator stream cipher is presented with an outline of its hardware implementation. © 1997 ieee.

Combined use of hardware and software in end systems is an important aspect in providing high performance communication subsystems to be used in real time distributed systems. We present a system for industrial automation and process control called MMS-ATM. Our architecture is based on the ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) protocol implemented in hardware and the MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification) application layer protocol implemented in software. We discuss the implementation structure of MMS-ATM and evaluate the performance of this hybrid hardware/software implementation.

A number of factors motivate and favor the implementation of communication protocols in user-space. There is a particularly strong motivation for the provision of scalable, multiway and connectionless transport for distributed computing, multimedia, and conferencing applications. This is also true of high speed networking, where it is beneficial to keep the OS kernel out of the critical path in communication. User-space protocol implementations may hold the key to optimal functionality and performance. We describe the Connectionless, Lightweight and Multiway (CLAM) communications system which provides efficient and scalable user-space support for distributed applications requiring multiple protocols. The system supports heterogeneous networked applications with irregular or asynchronous communication patterns and multimodal data. We focus on motivating and describing the CLAM architecture and present some experimental results that evaluate an specific protocol module inside this architecture. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.

The Integrated Services Packet Networks are designed to offer new network services to a wide variety of applications. The architecture behind the new services consists primarily of a packet scheduler, a packet classifier, admission control, and a reservation establishment protocol. This paper describes a complete implementation of this Traffic Control extensions. We also designed and implemented a kernel interface which permits to send Quality of Service (QoS) requests to the network layer. We explain how the elements of the architecture work in concert and which mechanisms we use to guarantee a requested amount of bandwidth. Our scheduler uses a variant of the Class Based Queuing mechanism (CBQ) of Sally Floyd and Van Jacobsen [6]. For the reservation signaling and establishment we use RSVP [2]. Finally this paper provides a performance evaluation of the proposed mechanisms.

A flexible Digital Signal Processing (DSP) oriented approach for implementing secure facsimile (fax) communications systems is presented. The signal processing techniques for fax coding, data encryption, and automatic cryptographic key management based on Public Key cryptography are discussed. The proposed system architecture can exploit the latest advances in DSP microprocessor and VLSI technology to offer lower cost, reduced size, and higher performance cryptosystems. This approach was successfully adopted by Intracorn S.A. in the design and implementation of Secl-ine-Fax secure fax communications system and constitutes the continuation of work on secure voice systems.

Our work is concerned with the provision of resource-managed multimedia communications in an. Internet environment. In this paper we outline an architecture and an implementation of a real-time continuous media adaptive application that includes the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) and its associated control protocol (RTCP). The application makes use of the RTCP feedback reports for Quality of Service (QoS) monitoring of the traffic load on the network. The feedback reports are utilised by the application's adaptive rate controller to alleviate the problem of network congestion. We are assessing the suitability of RTPfRTCP in this application. Results obtained from our experiments with the adaptive rate controller are described and discussed. Then, some problems and issues concerning adaptive applications are presented. Finally, we outline the next phase of our work which concerns development of management facilities.

OMG's (Object Management Group) CORBA (Common Object Request Broker architecture) is becoming a common platform for distributed computing environment. However, it is yet to address CSCW (Computer Supported Collaborative Work) ftamework. This paper addresses the problem of building a framework for CSCW and proposes a new CSCW framework based on CORBA (CFC). CFC includes session, participant, mode, directory, stream, media and resource management. A desktop conference system and DSM-CC compliant video-on-demand system were built to demonstrate the usefulness of the framework. The performance of CORBA based CSCW applications is given. The strengths and weaknesses of using a CORBA framework are also discussed.
