Flexible implementation platforms for integrated service communicationsubsystems providing highperformance capabilities are increasingly required. Dedicated VLSI components can be used for time-critical processing tasks in order to provide highperformance. The highly modular VLSI communication co-processor designed with parametrizable and programmable components allows for service flexibility. The implementationarchitecture is not limited to a certain protocol, but allows the implementation of a variety of high-speed protocols. Furthermore, this architecture supports the mapping of a formal protocol specification onto a powerful implementationarchitecture. This paper describes the architecture in general and dedicated components in detail. Preliminary performance values are presented and compared with measurements of typical software implementations.

The design of a host-system adapter that exploits the full capabilities of Fibre Channel can present a major technical challenge because of the Gb/s data rates involved. In this paper, we discuss various architectural issues and features of a high-performance protocol engine that we are developing as part of an ultra highspeed networking solution based on Fibre Channel. Our approach attempts to maximize hardware-assisted "realtime" protocol processing, while minimizing involvement by the software. The paper also presents a brief overview of recent developments in the Fibre Channel technology in general, potential applications of our protocol engine, and trends in Fibre Channel technology as an ultra-high speed networking solution.

This article presents an efficient multimedia B-ISDN network architecture wherein each connection's end-to-end QoS is controlled only at VP access points. It is based on a high speed, high quality, CBR-VP backbone network, and a flexible, multimedia VC network. It also proposes a new traffic shaping mechanism for the VP access points which precisely controls cell clumping at the VC level. This yields an efficient bandwidth allocation method that improves the network utilization gain compared with conventional shapers. The architecture and multi-QoS control mechanism are highly suitable for the simple implementation of a simple and highperformance network that will support a wide range of multimedia communication services.
