In this paper, the evaluation and the implementation of quasi-cyclic LDPC (QC-LDPC) codes in MIMO-OFDM systems are presented. QC-LDPC has comparative error correcting performance with random irregular LDPC and considerably reduces complexity. We evaluate communication performance of the QC-LDPC coded system based on the ieee802.11n standard in a 4 times 4 MIMO scheme. In the LSI implementation, we have designed both the LDPC encoder and decoder for the QC-LDPC system, where an iterative parallel architecture is adopted to deal with such requirements of high-throughput data rates. The designed encoder and decoder have 61 K and 850 K in logic gates, respectively. Power consumption of encoder is 5.3 mW, where decoder leading 199.6 mW in power dissipation.

In this paper, we propose a high performance elliptic curve cryptographic processor over GF(2 163 ). The proposed architecture is based on a modified Lopez-Dahab elliptic curve point multiplication algorithm and uses Gaussian normal basis (GNB) for GF(2 163 ) field arithmetic. To achieve a high throughput rates, we design two new word- level arithmetic units over GF(2 163 ) and derive a parallelized elliptic curve point doubling and point addition algorithm. We implement our design using Xilinx XC4VLX80 FPGA device which uses 24,263 slices and has a maximum frequency of 143 MHz. Our design is roughly 4.8 times faster with 2 times increased hardware complexity compared with the previous hardware implementation. Therefore, the proposed architecture is well suited to elliptic curve cryptosystems requiring high throughput rates such as network processors and Web servers.

The paper addresses the issue of implementing a GAPU (global analogic programming unit) on the emulated-digital CNN-UM (cellular neural/nonlinear networks universal machine) architecture. It has been embedded with a flexible Xilinx MicroBlaze soft-core processor to take full advantage of the joint computing power of high-speed arithmetics and programmability. The GAPU implementation accelerates the processing performance of the Falcon architecture by decreasing the I/O communication and it also provides a stand-alone operation, which is capable of controlling complex sophisticated analogic CNN algorithms similar to various visual microprocessors, such as the ACE16k and the Q-Eye in the Bi-i, and eye-RIS cellular vision systems. Our primary aim was to implement an FPGA-based emulated-digital CNN-UM with embedded GAPU for computation intensive, real image-processing tasks.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks represent a valuable architecture for streaming video over the Internet. In these systems, users contribute their resources to relay the media to others and no dedicated infrastructure is required. In order to ensure a low end-to-end delay, P2P overlay networks are often organized as a set of complementary multicast trees. The source of the stream multiplexes the data on top of these trees and the routing of packets is statically defined. In this scenario, the reliability of the overlay links is critical for the performance of the system since temporary link failure or network congestion can cause a significant disruption of the end-user quality. The novel Scalable Video Coding (SVC) standard enables efficient usage of the network capacity by allowing intermediate high capacity nodes in the overlay network to dynamically extract layers from the scalable bit stream to serve less capable peers. On the other hand, SVC incurs a certain loss in terms of coding efficiency with respect to H.264/AVC single-layer coding. We propose a simple model that allows to evaluate the trade-off of using a scalable codec with respect to single-layer coding, given the distribution of the receivers' capacities in an error-free network. We also report experimental results obtained by using SVC on top of a real-time implementation of the Stanford Peer-to-Peer Multicast (SPPM) protocol that clearly show the benefits of a prioritization mechanism to react to network congestion. ©2007 ieee.

In a network system, such as a router or a switch, it is difficult to achieve flexibility and performance at the same time. We propose an architecture that consists of network processors for packet processing and a VLAN-based Ethernet backplane for switching. This allows us to use flexible network processors for packet processing functions, and still exploit the cost-effectiveness of Ethernet to achieve switching capacity. We propose an architecture where we use VLAN tagging for internal traffic management, and also for distributed packet forwarding decisions between ingress and egress units. We describe our implementation of this system and report performance analysis, where we find that we can achieve near line rate performance in a system with Gigabit Ethernet ports, and that internal memory management is important for network processor performance.

The next generation network (NGN) may be regarded as a fresh broadband architecture that best utilizes and combines the major advances in optical, wireless, and computer communication networking of the past decade. Attractive business opportunities will be opened by the NGN, but cost-effectiveness in building and operating it remains a crucial challenge that can differentiate a profitable implementation strategy from one that is merely "hype". This paper proposes a promising PON+WiMax architecture for optical-wireless-integration (OWI) and a cost model for this architecture that considers the related optimization issues. Results from initial use of this cost model compare OWI with other existing solutions for broadband access, showing superior cost-effectiveness for the OWI solution as well as the potential for further reducing capital and operating expenses.

Technology evolution in wireless communication is enabling pervasive connectivity and ubiquitous access to the Internet. In this scenario, more and more security critical applications are being deployed over platforms which include mobile devices. It is thus crucial that security services be provided to mobile devices as well. Since security functions are typically based on computationally intensive cryptographic algorithms, achieving this goal turns out to be a hard task due to (1) limited computing power, and (2) constraints imposed by peculiarities of the software platforms. This work presents an architecture which allows the provision of digital Time-Stamping services to mobile devices with limited resources. The architecture is described with respect to a case study system, and experimental results are also discussed.

In this paper, we propose a new optical network architecture, called Optical Slot Switching (OSS), suitable for large data transmission where we use PLZT optical switch controlled by GMPLS(Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching). PLZT ultra-high speed optical switch can improve the bandwidth efficiency by reducing the guard time between data compared with the conventional optical switch. In OSS network, user dynamically establishes the path and can transport a large size data efficiently by using reserved slots in a moment. Through the experimental results, we show that our proposed OSS is suitable for large data transmission.

Next generation (NG) routers, characterized by high speed interfaces, large switching capacity and petabit packet processing speed have recently been deployed in core networks of world class operators. Based on distributed architectures, these routers are designed with control cards and line cards interconnected by a very high-speed switch fabric, where line cards contain processing and memory resource allowing the sharing of some route processing tasks with control cards. The traditional implementation model of router software, where control cards assume all the processing tasks, is therefore no longer appropriate. In this paper, we propose a distributed model for implementing router software in order to fully exploit the hardware platform of the next router generation, taking into account the additional capacity of line cards. The model corresponds to a distributed architecture with control cards acting as super nodes and line cards acting as peers. It also provides "direct" communication between line cards, allowing them to cooperate in some task processing without going through control cards. Such a model significantly increases the robustness, scalability and availability of routers. We also investigate the proposed distributed model in the context of different protocols supported by a router, such as signaling and routing protocols. Two case studies are presented where we discuss the advantages of the distributed model for OSPF and LDP protocols.

This paper raises the issues faced in edge node design for an Agile All-Photonic Network (AAPN) and proposes solutions. The architecture discussed addresses several issues such as packet processing, traffic aggregation and encapsulation, buffers implementation, local scheduling, QoS provision, traffic monitoring and internal control mechanisms. The main goal of this work is to provide a detailed description of the functional modules considering technologies readily available now or immediately on the horizon.
