This paper presents an original framework for evolving a vision-based mobile robot controller using genetic programming. This framework is built on the Open BEA-GLE framework for the evolutionary computations, and on OpenGL for simulating the visual environment of a physical mobile robot. The feasibility of this framework is demonstrated through a simple, yet non-trivial, line following problem. © 2006 ieee.

In this paper, we propose a novel and robust algorithm for the groupwise non-rigid registration of multiple unlabeled point-sets with no bias toward, any of the given point-sets. To quantify the divergence between multiple probability distributions each estimated from the given point sets, we develop a novel measure based on their cumulative distribution functions that we dub the CDF-JS divergence. The measure parallels the well known Jensen-Shannon divergence (defined for probability density functions) but is more regular than the JS divergence since its definition is based on CDFs as opposed to density functions. As a consequence, CDF-JS is more immune to noise and statistically more robust than the JS. We derive the analytic gradient of the CDF-JS divergence with respect to the non-rigid registration parameters for use in the numerical optimization of the groupwise registration leading a computationally efficient and accurate algorithm. The CDF-JS is symmetric and has no bias toward any of the given point-sets, since there is NO fixed reference data set. Instead, the groupwise registration takes place between the input data sets and an evolving target dubbed the pooled model. This target evolves to a fully registered pooled data set when the CDF-JS defined over this pooled data is minimized. Our algorithm is especially useful for creating atlases of various shapes (represented as point distribution models) as well as for simultaneously registering 3D range data sets without establishing any correspondence. We present experimental results on non-rigid registration of 2D/3D real point set data. © 2006 ieee.

Part-based tree-structured models have been widely used for 2D articulated human pose-estimation. These approaches admit efficient inference algorithms while capturing the important kinematic constraints of the human body as a graphical model. These methods often fail however when multiple body parts fit the same image region resulting in global pose estimates that poorly explain the over-all image evidence. Attempts to solve this problem have focused on the use of strong prior models that are limited to learned activities such as walking. We argue that the problem actually lies with the image observations and not with the prior. In particular, image evidence for each body part is estimated independently of other parts without regard to self-occlusion. To address this we introduce occlusion-sensitive local likelihoods that approximate the global image likelihood using per-pixel hidden binary variables that encode the occlusion relationships between parts. This occlusion reasoning introduces interactions between non-adjacent body parts creating loops in the underlying graphical model. We deal with this using an extension of an approximate belief propagation algorithm (PAMPAS). The algorithm recovers the real-valued 2D pose of the body in the presence of occlusions, does not require strong priors over body pose and does a quantitatively better job of explaining image evidence than previous methods. © 2006 ieee.

The face recognition includes enhancement and segmentation of face image, detection of face boundary and facial features, matching of extracted features against the features in a database, and finally recognition of the face. The face detection algorithms are based on either gray level template matching or computation of geometric relationships among facial features. Though a number of algorithms are devised for face recognition, the technology is not matured enough to recognize the face of a person with and without beard to be the same. This research proposes a robust algorithm for preprocessing the face image with beard for face recognition. Simulation is done using eighteen JPEG images of 9 different persons having beard and without beard. This research finds application in homeland security where it can increase the robustness of the existing face recognition algorithms. © 2006 ieee.

In this paper, we propose a novel contour-based algorithm for 3D object reconstruction from a single uncalibrated image acquired under the setting of two plane mirrors. With the epipolar geometry recovered from the image and the properties of mirror reflection, metric reconstruction of an arbitrary rigid object is accomplished without knowing the camera parameters and the mirror poses. For this mirror setup, the epipoles can be estimated from the correspondences between the object and its reflection, which can be established automatically from the tangent lines of their contours. By using the property of mirror reflection as well as the relationship between the mirror plane normal with the epipole and camera intrinsic, we can estimate the camera intrinsic, plane normals and the orientation of virtual cameras. The positions of the virtual cameras are determined by minimizing the distance between the object contours and the projected visual cone for a reference view. After the camera parameters are determined, the 3D object model is constructed via the image-based visual hulls (IBVH) technique. The 3D model can be refined by integrating the multiple models reconstructed from different views. The main advantage of the proposed contour-based Structure from Reflection (SfR) algorithm is that it can achieve metric reconstruction from an uncalibrated image without feature point correspondences. Experimental results on synthetic and real images are presented to show its performance. © 2006 ieee.

Current MIDI recording and transmitting technology allows teachers to teach piano playing remotely {or off-line): a teacher plays a MIDI-keyboard at one place and a student observes the played piano keys on another MIDI-keyboard at another place. What this technology does not allow is to see how the piano keys are played, namely: which hand and finger was used to play a key. In this paper we present a video recognition tool that makes it possible to provide this information. A video-camera is mounted on top of the piano keyboard and video recognition techniques are then used to calibrate piano image with MIDI sound, then to detect and track pianist hands and then to annotate the fingers that play the piano. The result of the obtained video annotation of piano playing can then be shown on a computer screen for further perusal by a piano teacher or a student. © 2006 ieee.
