Common data preprocessing routines often introduce considerable flaws in laser-based tracking of extended objects. As an alternative, extended target tracking methods, such as the Gamma-Gaussian-Inverse Wishart (GGIW) probability hypothesis density (PHD) filter, work directly on raw data. In this paper, the GGIW-PHD filter is applied to real world traffic scenarios. To cope with the large amount of data, a mixture clustering approach which reduces the combinatorial complexity and computation time is proposed. The effective segmentation of raw measurements with respect to spatial distribution and motion is demonstrated and evaluated on two different applications: pedestrian tracking from a vehicle and intersection surveillance.

This paper presents a novel approach to the fusion of nonlinear motion dynamics for 2D target tracking applications in video analytics by using Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) and the projection filter. The motion dynamics of the target is first conveniently represented using the corresponding FPE for the state posterior. The motion dynamics is then fused into target tracking process to reliably predict the target position and velocity in 2D target tracking by solving the corresponding FPE of the state posterior using a projection filter. Once the next system measurement is available, the state posterior is then updated using the Bayes' rule in the projection filter framework as well. Experiments using synthetic and real aerial surveillance video data show that the proposed FPE-based target tracker is able to reliably track targets in the present of nonlinear motion dynamics, and that the proposed FPE-based tracker outperforms traditional nonlinear filters in target tracking such as the Kalman filter (including extended Kalman filter and unscented Kalman filter) and the particle filter.

In this paper the tracking and analytical infrastructure necessary to adequately manage the power demands of a fleet of electric vehicles is considered. The data from a 230 day trial of 15 vehicles has been used to simulate a single day with over 3000 vehicles on the road within the North East of England. Current analytical approaches are considered and possible future avenues are addressed. A general model for predicting the probability of vehicle charging is proposed. The comparative charging rates between morning and evening and the spatial distribution of the charging are all considered. It is found that although the evening charging has the greater number of charging events across the region it is the morning charges which pose the most risk for local power management as the morning charges tend to be concentrated within a smaller spatial extent. In more general terms the use of individual vehicle tracking systems is found to be an ideal system for determining the current and future state of power consumption for electric vehicles.

The main contribution of this paper is the general framework, termed multi-core Beamformer Particle Filter (multi-core BPF), for solving the ill-posed EEG inverse problem. The method combines a particle filter (statistical approach) for reconstruction of the brain source spatial locations and a multi-core Beamformer (deterministic approach) for estimation of the corresponding dipole waveforms in a recursive way The intuition behind is to benefit from the advantages of both deterministic and statistical inverse problem solvers in order to improve the estimation accuracy without increasing the complexity and the computational cost. Our simulations show that the proposed algorithm can reconstruct reliably the few most active (the dominant) brain sources that have generated the registered EEG measurements. The main advantage of the method is that in contrast to conventional (single-core) Beamforming spatial filters, the proposed Multi-core Beamformer explicitly takes into consideration the potential temporal correlation between the dipoles.

. Extended objects generate multiple measurements and are characterised with their size or volume. They require methods able to deal with the data association problem and at the same time to estimate both their kinematic states and shape parameters. This paper presents a solution to the extended object tracking for rectangular extended objects, with the Box Particle filter (Box PF) approach. The Box PF is implemented based on dynamically calculated constraints. Promising results are demonstrated.

In tracking applications, the target state (e.g, position, velocity) can be estimated by processing the measurements collected from all deployed sensors at a central node. The estimation performance significantly relies on the accuracy of the sensor positions/rotations when data fusion is conducted. Since in practice precise knowledge of this sensor information may not be available, in this paper two Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) approaches are proposed to jointly estimate the target state and resolve the sensor position uncertainty. The first one uses the Particle filter combined with the Gibbs sampling method to deal with the general sensor registration problem. The second one uses the Rao-Blackwellised Particle filter for a special case where the uncertainty of the sensor is a nearly constant measurement bias.

The Process for Probabilistic Multi-Source Multi-INT Intel fusion Benefit Analysis** (PIFBA) provides a methodology for statistically computing the probability of detecting, locating, and tracking objects in order to assess current capabilities or the benefit of adding or removing ISR assets in order to obtain the statistically optimal result. The PIFBA process defines the approach to calculate the probabilistic benefits or rewards associated with integrating or fusing multisource multi-INT products across a wide range of platforms, sensors, environmental conditions and target objects. This process applies to analyzing ISR capabilities, effectiveness, and gaps, as well as the benefits of applying existing or new technology and tactics. The PIFBA process was designed to answer the following questions: Based on the defined ISR assets - what is the probability that we know a piece of Intel with sufficient accuracy and timeliness to be of value to the analyst or warfighter? What is the benefit of adding new data via additional platforms, sensors, or processing? What is the benefit of adding new systems or technology and to what degree of performance must they exhibit in order to affect the statistical outcome?

. This paper provides an initial examination of the use of particle filters in tracking swarms of small targets such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles using a radar. From the standpoint of conventional tracking solutions, such swarms present a severe challenge — due not only to the quasi-erratic motion of the UAVs relative to the swarm trajectory as a whole, but also from the effects of the small target size upon radar resolution and detection probability. It is shown here that a particle filter is capable of providing a stable track on the swarm centroid, although not the individual constituent UAVs.

. In the context of multi-target tracking application, the concept of variance in the number of targets estimated in specified regions of the surveillance scene has been recently introduced for multi-object filters. This article has two main objectives. First, the regional variance is derived for a multi-object representation commonly used in the tracking literature, known as the multi-Bernoulli point process, in which the multi-target state is described with a set of hypothesised tracks with associated existence probabilities. This model is exploited in multi-target applications where it can be assumed that targets evolve independently of each other and generate sensor observations that are uncorrelated with other targets. An illustration of the concept of regional statistics (mean and variance) in target number, and how to interpret them in the broader context of multi-object filtering, it then provided. Possible applications include performance assessment and sensor control for multi-target tracking.

the context of maritime surveillance, low-power high-frequency surface-wave (HFSW) radars are attracting significant attention as cost-effective tools for long-range ship detection and tracking applications. In this paper, multi-target tracking and data fusion techniques are applied to live-recorded data from a network of three oceanographic HFSW radars installed on the coast of the German Bight, in the North Sea. This campaign follows a previous one conducted in 2009, in which two HFSW radars were deployed on the coast of the Ligurian Sea, in the Mediterranean. Ship reports from the automatic identification system, recorded from a number of coastal stations, are exploited as ground truth information. A methodology is then applied to classify the fused tracks and to estimate single-sensor and data fusion performances. Both in situ and model data are used to investigate the capabilities of the systems according to the variations of the meteorological and oceanographic conditions. Finally, preliminary results are presented and discussed, together with outlines for future works.
