Variable structured modelling and the concept of the functional state is considered. A method to obtain the state machine, which controls transitions between the functional states is introduced. The method includes both symbolic or logic and algorithmic components. The concept and the method are illustrated by a simple `wire model'. State estimation under the functional state concept and multimodel environment is demonstrated. Applications to bioreactor control are discussed with references to alpha-amylase and yeast fermentations.

When introducing an Optimal Power Flow algorithm in the control centre of the German utility VEW it had to be considered that all transformers feeding the 110 kV voltage level are equipped with local voltage regulators. The paper deals with the modelling of those decentralized voltage regulators and their integration into an existing optimal power flow algorithm developed at the Aachen University of Technology. The main results achieved by application of the extended Optimal Power Flow algorithm to the VEW HV and EHV grid are presented.

Conventional modelling, state estimation, multi-step ahead prediction, and control of bioprocesses are often difficult owing to the uncertainties involved. Backpropagation multi-layer neural network models and fuzzy knowledge-based systems were constructed to overcome such problems. Neural networks were programmed in QuickC and implemented in a personal computer with an 80486/33 MHz processor. Object oriented programming in a Smalltalk/V environment was employed for the rule-based fuzzy expert systems. Results of multi-step ahead prediction both of the enzyme activity and biomass in a fed-batch glucoamylase fermentation, and of the adaptive estimation of substrate feed rate and biomass in a fed-batch baker's yeast fermentation were presented as examples. The potential of neural networks in the context of process control and hybrid systems was discussed.

Fossil fired power stations are essentially considered, also looking at simple global models widely used to design control strategies, but paying more attention to computer-intensive engineering simulation codes based on modular modelling approaches. Because of that, the presentation of the matter is oriented to the consideration of individual components or subsystems, to the problems involved in their separate modelling and to the best ways to threat their interactions.

A new type of bus for load flow analysis is proposed in this paper;this type of bus, named PX, is particularly suited for modelling elements like static compensators or asynchronous generators. The inclusion of this PX bus in the Fast Decoupled Load Flow method is presented and discussed. Fidelity of engineering simulation of thermal generating units has been remarkably enhanced with the introduction of modular modelling computer codes implementing a strict correspondence between plant components and submodels (or modules). On the contrary, the control system has commonly been given a conceptual representation, where the correspondence between the individual elements of a real control system and the conceptual elements realizing the control functions in the simulator is quite difficult to manage. control system engineering is essentially based on standardization of system specification documents to which any design or evaluation function should be unambiguously referred. To meet such engineering requirement, an existing power plant simulation code has been equipped with a CAE system for control design, which, besides the basic functions of any engineering CAD system (including software production) allows automatical tuning of the industrial tunable controllers. An application to superheated steam temperature control of a drum boiler is considered.
