The importance of deep and qualitative knowledge for medical diagnosis expert systems is discussed. The KARDIO project is reviewed in which a qualitative model of the heart was used to derive the relation between arrhythmias and ECG patterns. This relation is then used for ECG diagnosis. The KARDIO approach to qualitative modelling is then compared with other approaches to qualitative modelling from the viewpoint of their applicability in medical physiology.

Many biological controlsystems are manifest as electrical oscillations in excitable tissues, hence they can be represented by nonlinear oscillators. The communication between such tissues can be modelled as interaction between nonlinear oscillators. This study deals with the use of electronic models and computer models to elucidate the nature of interaction between nonlinear oscillators.

The aim of this paper is to theoretically describe the effects of the weighting constants on the mean square error (MSE) of the parameter estimates, and clarify the existence of the optimal weighting constant minimizing the MSE. Furthermore, we give a data-adaptive way of determining the optimal value of the weighting constant, which makes use of only available input-output measurement data. The effectiveness of the optimal selection of the weighting constant in the convergency improvement is investigated through both numerical simulations and modelling of kinetics in diabetes using depancreatized dogs.

The paper presents a novel design for the computer modelling and simulation of the cardiovascular system based upon relational analysis. The advantage of this approach is that the model structure, assumptions and parameters are explicit and easily changeable. The structure of a relational database schema for cardiovascular models is presented, and illustrated with a previously published model. The computer system we have developed is able to perform quantitative time simulations of a model held in the database.

Computers have made it possible to probe the properties of mammalian vascular systems more broadly and more deeply. As a consequence, a number of apparently established concepts had to be abandoned, and new insight could be gained. In this presentation, an effort will be made to place some of these developments in perspective. The effective length of the arterial system is discussed along with factor relating to capillary filtration as well as vessel collapse.

Many biomedicalsystems possess features of multi-level or hierarchical organization. To investigate how structure and behaviour are related in such systems, a simple two level time dependent model is proposed and studied using the methods of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Analytic expressions are derived which characterize the model in terms of the intra-level and inter-level couplings, environmental conditions, and time scales of interest. The model is shown to possess a continuum of global behaviours, ranging from those of a control hierarchy, wherein one level slaves another, to a hierarchy wherein each structural level is associated with an essentially autonomous behaviour.

In the line of the minimal modelling strategy, we present various modelling attempts to measure hepatic glucose production during a labelled intravenous glucose tolerance test (labelled IVGTT). We propose a physiological model which allows to reconstruct by deconvolution a profile of hepatic glucose production which is more reliable than those obtained with simpler models. The model presented incorporates the most recent information on the influence of insulin on glucose kinetics and allows recovery of a more physiological prediction of hepatic response during the IVGTT.

Qualitative simulation is an area of artificial intelligence which attempts to model the way humans think about physical systems. The paper presents the results of a reconstruction and critical evaluation of the QSIM algorithm, as applied to compartmental systems. The results show that satisfactory simulations can be obtained for simple systems, but that there are a number of drawbacks. We make the proposal that qualitative simulation should be done in the wider context of a 'knowledge-based model' where there is also conceptual, mathematical and numeric information available.
