A model-based control system approach to the interpretation of clinical measures of thyroid disease is described. It is shown that a model identified from routine clinical data can be used to predict patient state. A number of features of the model and its use in relation to patient management are discussed including: microcomputer implementation of the model;the accuracy of long-term prediction of patient state from short-term clinical data;the incorporation of time-varying effects within the thyroid by updating of model parameters through sequential estimation;and the role of the model in relation to experimental design.

A detailed three time scale analysis with the complete reconstruction of the 'slow' and 'high' speed dynamic components of all state variables of the full model is described. The paper exposes briefly the aims of process control and proposes its realization through a tracking approach. Therefore a linear quadratic input-output tracking algorithm is presented and completed with the constraints satisfaction. To overcome the modelling errors and the linear model limitations, two approachs are proposed. First, the output feedback integral correction. Second, multimodel technique with two parts: location and control synthesis. The linear optimal filtering is used for the process-models location. Based on the quality of models a global control synthesis is realized from weighted combination of the individual models control values. The experimental results on a binary distillation column are discussed.

This paper describes the industrial application of multivariable control theory to the control of the product qualities of a full-scale high-vacuum distillation unit. First the dynamic process behaviour was studied: the main interactions were determined and the reflux flows were selected as control variables. Then the dynamic process behaviour was assessed quantitatively by means of experimental modelling. Test signals were applied to each of the reflux flows in turn, using a Pseudo Random Binary Sequence, while the time series of all relevant process measurements were stored for offline identification. This resulted in a number of transfer functions which were converted into a state-space model of the process dynamics. The model of the process was used to develop the multivariable control algorithm by applying the linear quadratic control theory.

In order to establish the optimum control system of hot sand cooling in foundry, a mathematical model for cooling process has been studied. The present study is especially directed towards modelling on dynamical behavior of the process in one-pass fluidized bed. The model includes linear differential equations for phase-to-phase heat transfer. Computer simulations on both transient and steady-state temperatures of the bed are provided and compared with the experimental results. Sensitivity analysis of the cooling model has been carried out. A special interest is in the variation of steady-state bed temperature owing to the change of inlet sand temperature. The results of computer simulation are presented and comparison with the experiments is done. The proposed model is shown useful in predicting process characteristics of sand cooling system and in designing the optimum cooling system.

Measurements of the coal feed, feedwater flow, drum level, steam flow, turbine steam valve (TSV) pressure error and generator power were monitored on a 500 MW(e) drum boiler during full power operation under closed loop control. The fluctuations in these measurements about their mean value are analysed using multivariate time series techniques and parametric models to identify the dynamics of the drum boiler. Recursive parameter estimation techniques and identifiability problems in determining the 'optimum' order autoregressive moving average (ARMA) models of the feedforward (process) and feedback (recycle/control) paths of distributed closed loop systems are discussed. The advantages of using cross-correlation for systems involving unknown feedback structure are illustrated. Parametric models of the variable affecting drum level are identified using a recursive parameter estimation methodology which incorporates a covariance resetting procedure.

A method for recursive estimation of the parameters of ARMA processes is proposed by using the circular lattice filter recently derived by the authors. This filter is originally proposed for estimating the parameters of multivariate AR processes and contains only scalar operations. As Lee, Friedlander, and Morf have done, by regarding a scalar ARMA process as a degenerate two variates AR process, we can apply the circular lattice algorithm to ARMA modelling. But our approach is more direct, since we deal with scalar quantities only and the benefit of this is that the number of multiplications per one sample of our algorithm is about 60% of that of Lee's algorithm.

The problem of obtaining state estimates for nonlinear, dynamic, stochastic systems is investigated. Recursive algorithms are introduced which, given a sequence of noisy measurements of the system output, produce optimal estimates of the system state for a specified optimality criterion. The Bayesian method is adopted in formulating the problem and the solution involves a bank of Kalman filters with outputs appropriately weighted to yield optimal state estimates. Novel features of the technique include the choice of loss function, the use of Gaussian sum approximations for probability densities and the modelling of the nonlinear system. This approach reveals some new aspects of the optimal nonlinear filtering problem. Simulation results show performance improvement compared with the extended Kalman filter.
