In this work, applications of microfluidic devices in the field of biomedical engineering will be described, with special focus on point-of-care tools (POC). These are devices offering rapid and easy-to-read diagnostic assays of various diseases or physiological conditions (COVID-19, allergies, cardiovascular diseases, tumours, pregnancy, etc.) that often can be applied by non-medically trained persons. Microfluidic devices play an important role in the development of POC tools. Recent advances in novel fabrication methods and multi-technology approaches allow to overcome common limitations, such as high cost, complex fluidic controls and pumping systems, or requiring specialized labour equipment and well-trained operators. Hence, these devices can be made available for a broad range of patients that might not have sufficient medical facilities. The influence of point-of-care tools on society, medical practice and early diagnosis will be discussed. Copyright (c) 2022 The Authors. We consider an SIR infection model with a general nonlinear transmission rate from the compartment of susceptible population (S) to the compartment of infected population (I). We assume that there is an infection-free equilibrium associated with the model, which pertains to the state at which there is no infection. We assume certain reasonable properties on the transmission function and the rates of birth, death and recovery of the population in compartments S and I. We then give a set of sufficient conditions under which the infection-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. Next, we assume the existence of an endemic equilibrium, which represents a state at which the compartment I is not empty. We then provide other biologically reasonable conditions that guarantee its global asymptotic stability. The proof of global asymptotic stability of the endemic equilibrium is based on the construction of a Lyapunov function which is a generalization of the standard Lyapunov function for the LotkaVolterra prey-predator system. We finally illustrate our results via simulation of a certain SIR model that obeys all the conditions considered in the work. Copyright (c) 2024 The Authors. Hearing- impaired listeners have a reduced ability to selectively attend to sounds of interest amid distracting sounds in everyday environments. This ability is not fully regained with modern hearing technology. A better understanding of the brain mechanisms underlying selective attention during speech processing may lead to brain-controlled hearing aids with improved detection and amplification of the attended speech. Prior work has shown that brain responses to speech, measured with magnetoencephalography (MEG) or electroencephalography (EEG), are modulated by selective attention. These responses can be predicted from the speech signal through linear filters called Temporal Response Functions (TRFs). Unfortunately, these sensor-level predictions are often noisy and do not provide much insight into specific brain source locations. Therefore, a novel method called Neuro-Current Response Functions (NCRFs) was recently introduced to directly estimate linear filters at the brain source level from MEG responses to speech from one talker. However, MEG is not well-suited for wearable and realtime hearing technologies. This work aims to adapt the NCRF method for EEG under more realistic listening environments. EEG data was recorded from a hearing-impaired listener while attending to one of two competing talkers embedded in 16-talker babble noise. Preliminary results indicate that source-localized linear filters can be directly estimated from EEG data in such competing-talker scenarios. Future work will focus on evaluating the current method on a larger dataset and on developing novel methods, which may aid in the improvement of nextgeneration brain-controlled hearing technology. This paper deals with the covariance control for discrete-time linear switched systems affected by additive stochastic noises. Given any periodic stabilizing switching law for the deterministic system associated to the stochastic one, a finite set of matrices is characterized that is an attractor for the system state covariance matrix sequence. Moreover, upper and lower bounds on the covariance matrices of the state are determined by the trajectories of one-dimensional linear systems. Copyright (C) 2022 The Authors.

A prevalent theme throughout science and engineering is the ongoing paradigm shift from isolated systems to open and interconnected systems. Port-Hamiltonian theory developed as a synthesis of geometric mechanics and network theory. The possibility to model complex multiphysical systems via interconnection of simpler components is often advertised as one of its most attractive features. The development of a port-Hamiltonian modelling language however remains a topic which has not been sufficiently addressed. We report on recent progress towards the formalization and implementation of a modelling language for exergetic port-Hamiltonian systems. Its diagrammatic syntax is the operad of undirected wiring diagrams with an interpretation akin to bond graphs. Together with a port-Hamiltonian semantics defined as an operad functor, this enables a modular and hierarchical approach to model specification. Copyright (C) 2022 The Authors.

Industrial processes are measured and controlled using high-dimensional process variables, but its overall operation is usually characterised by low-dimensional patterns. The changes in the pattern are dominated by three features: free motion, controlled motion, and uncertainty. In this paper, all three features are taken into consideration to propose a new probabilistic dynamic-controlled latent variable (PDCLV) model structure using a dynamic Bayesian network for process modelling in the pattern space. To this end, the linear dynamic system characterised by control inputs is introduced, and the expectation maximisation algorithm is specially designed for learning the PDCLV model. Benefitting from the dynamic causality between control inputs and the explicit modelling of the pattern, a method for pattern-based stochastic model predictive control (SMPC) is implemented successfully to realise process optimisation. A case study on an industrial boiler combustion process demonstrates the benefits of the proposed PDCLV structure for pattern-space modelling and pattern-based SMPC. Copyright (C) 2022 The Authors.

modelling of the different power system components is very essential for the adequate operation and planning of the network. Load modelling is one of the areas in power system engineering that is often overlooked but has a considerable impact on power system dynamics Load modelling still needs further investigation to develop an adequate and precise load model. Consumer's demand depends on their behaviour, seasonal factor, time factor and other exogenous factors. It is a challenging task to maintain the power quality, stability and adequacy of the system with a changing load behaviour. This paper focuses on the mathematical representation of residential and commercial load characteristics of a distribution feeder from bottom-up approach. A composite static load modelling approach is presented in the paper, which is classified into three major sections i.e. load inventory survey, laboratory experiment and parameter estimation Consumer's load behaviour and appliances have been determined from the survey. Similarly, voltage -power correlation of load from laboratory experiments assist to classify the consumer's load and parameter estimation is based on the load composition of a certain time duration. Load composition here incorporates the duty cycle and weekly factor along with other related consumer data. Copyright (C) 2022 The Authors.

This paper demonstrates the use of model predictive control (MPC) formulations for uncertain time-varying biopharmaceutical and biomedical systems implemented using measured data without prior knowledge of an accurate model. Furthermore, we demonstrate how prior knowledge can be incorporated in the identification of the model either through constraints or as regularization of the system identification procedure. We demonstrate the use of system identification to develop a model of the fed-batch Chinese hamster ovary mammalian cell bioreactor process and the implementation of model-based control to maximize therapeutic product yields. We also use a time-varying nonlinear biomedical system to demonstrate improvements due to incorporating prior information in the learning of the models and reidentification of the models when prediction accuracy deteriorates. We propose a new partial least squares algorithm that incorporates regularization from prior knowledge and can handle missing data in the independent covariates. Simulation case studies involving a biopharmaceutical production process and automated drug delivery demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed techniques. Copyright (C) 2022 The Authors.

In this paper, subspace identification for wind turbines and more generally rotating periodic systems are investigated. Previous works have stressed the difficulty of modeling such systems as Linear Time Invariant and thus to apply classical Stochastic Subspace Identification. Such works plead for periodic or augmented theories. In this paper, the classical SSI can be applied to recover modal information that is related to the eigenstructure of the instrumented system despite the system excitation being modeled as non-stationary. copyright (C) 2022 The Authors.
